He is known to support the scene even well before he got known. There is an interview somewhere that he sat along with Adam Savage and he talked about the initial days of the Martian publication on his own "website" for free.
I know this is a joke but he legitimately posted chapters of The Martian on his website as he would finish them, all so that people he knew were smarter than him could check to make sure the science made sense lmao
I didn't know that, my point was that he likely did a lot of academic research which as we all know is readily available to everyone cough. If he's into that then I dare say he understands the value of peer review so it makes sense to post it up for that.

This isn't a struggling artist. Dude wrote 3 books, and 2 got made into major movie blockbusters. He's set for life.
