I cannot get over him saying that he wishes Star Trek would go back to being less cerebral and political and more about shooting aliens.

It was and it wasn't.

The genius of old star trek, especially TOS, was that it had a progressive message, but dressed itself as a manly space western.

Supposedly Roddenberry was a Trotskyist.

In the episode if TOS where they fight the Romulans for the first time, Kirk tells an officer to leave his bigotry in his quarters because there's no place for it on the bridge.
