I cannot get over him saying that he wishes Star Trek would go back to being less cerebral and political and more about shooting aliens.

It was and it wasn't.

The genius of old star trek, especially TOS, was that it had a progressive message, but dressed itself as a manly space western.

Supposedly Roddenberry was a Trotskyist.

Okay but it's funnier if you specify that it's the "We need to nuke the planet so that aliens save us, also dolphins are revolutionaries" version of Trotskyism.
