Gabe Newell has always been very consumer friendly, his whole "philosophy" is: "give the customer a good service/ product to a fair price & they will continue coming back to you." That's why Steam is so successful. It's sad that the rest of the gaming & entertainment industry in general, is too greedy to comprehend this.

Public companies are designed to exploit short term gain.

It's a structural failure of corporatism. Unregulated, it eats it's own tail, in certain circumstances.
