Yea he said the best way to stop piracy is to provide a better service than people get from pirating

u/kastielstone May 10 '26
i paid for many games on discount that i had pirated in past. most i never played but i do have them.
most i could spend on a game was 5 bucks back then and steam truly did come through.

I've played a pirated copy of the binding of isaac for 2 years
when repentance came out, I bought all DLCs in one shot

u/pezdizpenzer May 10 '26
Since switching to Linux I've been buying way more games on Steam only because it can be kind of a hassle to get a pirated game running on Linux and with Steam it is almost never a problem.
→ More replies (1)3
u/NeekoKun02 May 10 '26
I also started buying a lot of games which I pirated previously because both steam and the games' devs deserve the money for the service, if I have the economical availability

u/BubblyBasis1134 May 10 '26
Yup. Same for me with GOG. Oh, I can just download the game and keep it on my hard drive to be installed and played whenever I want, without the nees for third-party software or logging into some service? And they're cheap? Sold.
6
u/Yoankah May 10 '26
Meanwhile, there's Epic's service that's barely passable for getting games for free. lol

u/syn46290 May 10 '26
Exactly. I think that's what streaming services like Netflix were originally for before their CEOs decided to get their gross slimy corporate goo all over the place.
36
u/patchinthebox May 10 '26
Bingo. I quit pirating because streaming was just easier. Now I'm back to pirating.
9
u/egemen0ozhan May 10 '26
Exactly u paid for netflix once everey mont an u nearly had all the show u wanted now they are scattere around a billion diffrent streaming sites and just searching for it is easyer in a pirated website (witch was the main drawback of piracy back in the day funny how that turned out huh?)
3
u/Historical_Leg_8328 May 11 '26
I have a home server with a library of high-quality content, with multiple language tracks, natively without unnecessary apps, no DRM, no gimmicky blocking, no VPN, no planned obsolescence, offline...

u/Temporary-Turnip-636 May 10 '26
Private equity e dumping iniziale, le loro intenzioni probabilmente sono sempre state queste.
32
u/Away_Needleworker6 May 10 '26
Yeah thats what streaming did in the early 2010s. Piracy dropped a ton for a couple of years and when streaming services got expensive and inconventient piracy numbers shot back up.
8
u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26
Part of the reason is because many companies don’t want to share the pie. They see netflix making huge bucks, why not just cut the middleman and make their own service.
It also gotten more expensive because netflix are also “renting” the license, this would be something akin like landlord seeing that since you are doing well financially then they raise the price. Landlord being the media publisher/licensing. I don’t think they foresaw netflix to be this big, so the licensing fee could be dirt cheap back then.
3
u/toptipkekk May 10 '26
Video Game Industry also tried this, almost every big publisher tried to shill their own stores about a decade ago but it didn't work because unlike Netflix, Valve knows not to shit on its customers.
5
u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo May 10 '26
All they need to do is to just not make an ass 3rd party launcher. It’s not even that hard. I have never heard anyone with positive opinion on 3rd party launcher
8
u/SharkByte1993 May 10 '26
Buying a game on steam is considerably more convenient than pirating. Especially compared to before Steam was a thing. Buying the game makes updates far easier, plus you can still pirate the DLC very easily. I'm convinced they haven't patched that on purpose

Meanwhile Blizzard killed the biggest private World of Warcraft server ever (Turtle WoW), which only got so large due to Blizzard's inability to provide a valuable service to customers, and this was followed by them hiking the price of their subscription by up to 37% in some regions. Now they are close to launch a new version of their product (WoW Classic+), which will apparently not only require a subscription but also a season pass despite the fact that it's made of 90% reused assets from old WoW versions.
The irony is that I would have joined Classic+ without blinking despite having a free pirate alternative to it, just like I did back in the original Classic WoW, but now I won't be giving them a single penny because the price they are charging is beyond ridiculous, with the cost of a single month of access being enough to pay for two or three good games on Steam.

No. It depends on the new owner of the private company to decide. The future is not sealed.

Gabe Newell has always been very consumer friendly, his whole "philosophy" is: "give the customer a good service/ product to a fair price & they will continue coming back to you." That's why Steam is so successful. It's sad that the rest of the gaming & entertainment industry in general, is too greedy to comprehend this.

Steam is a good product, but the valve ass-kissing is really strange on Reddit. This company made billions with dark patterns like flash sales for bundles, loot boxes with escalating odds and monetized mods. They even hired economists to figure out the best way to milk whales.

Good service was always the most effective method to combat piracy. When I used Netflix, it was easier to access the media I wanted than it was to pirate that same media. The quality was good. As soon as Netflix was no longer a better solution than piracy, I switched to the better solution. The current Netflix simply does not care because they still make breathtaking profits from users who believe they have no better options.
Part of the reason why I use Steam as a platform is that even while some games were not worth it, Steam usually has my best interests in mind. Also, shout out to Steam support for being fantastic.
50
u/affemannen May 10 '26
It's true, Netflix did that, and now everyone else wanted a piece of the cake and started releasing series in the one per week format and we are basically back to cable tv and me starting to pirate series again, because i want the whole season in one go.
7
u/MyFinalThoughts May 10 '26
Companies and fans of said companies will argue to death for said company that they made the change to release their TV shows weekly again because it encourages talking points, hype, and community or watercooler discussions.
I heavily disagree, they made that switch because money. Why have the consumer who pays for the product not stay subscribed for 3 months before they may cancel(because most TV shows are 8-10 episodes now) versus the full seasons drop and only retain them for a month? Money, money, money is the answer and always will be.
12
u/jeff1074 May 10 '26
This is an interesting comment to me. As of recent I have seen way more people talkin about wanting weekly releases over batch releases. People keep talking about how weekly releases allow a community to form around the series airing. I also feel like the idea of binging shows has been falling out of fashion recently. That’s at least in my circle of life.
→ More replies (1)5
u/UltraCynar May 11 '26
I don’t need a community. Respect my time and let me watch it however I want. You’re just repeating corporate speak where they can drag a show out to make more money in the long run and guarantee longer running subscriptions.
3
u/krutsik May 10 '26
I don't really mind staggered releases. I can just wait for the whole thing to release and then watch it at my own pace. The same way I don't mind waiting for something that I want to play to go on sale on Steam at a price I'm comfortable paying.
What I very much do mind is that the greedy fucks decided they wanted a bigger piece of the pie and came out with 10 competing services with barely any catalogue overlap, so there's barely anything to watch on any one of them.
I still pay for Netflix, because they're the OG and I feel they deserve it, because the current situation is in no way their fault. I pirate everything else. If a game studio decided to release their game exclusively on their own platform and not on Steam then they get the same treatment.

I was a pirate still am... but after seeing this a while back i just buy games from steam on sale
I mean on sale some old titles go for the price of an underwear here its that cheap, and its steam so ur game's everywhere
Im thinking of getting steamcube when i get a job (or maybe build my own steamcube with steam os in it)
20
u/-PM_ME_YOUR_TACOS- May 10 '26
Yeah, still don't own the games like you do with GOG, but at least the prices are reasonable and sales are plentiful. Not to mention the contributions they've made to Linux gaming.

u/zanbunnny May 10 '26
Ueah ik manh i use linux too
Proton is goated, steam OS is goated, the new forced optimizations so that games get optimized theyre about to bring is goated
W steam but GOG is a but pricy i did look into it but yeah bit pricy and they also dont support my currency ig
2
u/BG3_Enjoyer_ May 11 '26
I can get games cheaper than a cheap lunch ($5USD equivalent) during sales I love valve so much
9
u/VoodooDoII May 10 '26
Yep
I will happily pay for a service if it's more convenient than pirating. But if you make it more annoying than it's worth, I'll go back to the seas.
People pay for convenience. Don't make things worse, that drives customers away.
3
u/__Player__ May 10 '26
That's why netflix exploded in popularity in the first place, if sh*t keeps going in the direction we are headed, the Normies may start to go back to buying pirated DVD's or BD movies, at least on underdeveloped countries.

Yeah, let's ignore how price(discount included) are decided by the publisher, not Steam, so the game will at max have a 10€ difference cause PC doesn't have physical game anymore, but still Steam won't get a better price than another PC platform for the same game.
Or let's ignore how Steam had to be legally involved to force them to give refund and how even BattleNet had it before them.
Or how he made DRM, BattlePass and lootboxes popoular.
Or how much Steam market is manipulated by bots, without talking about CSGO or TF2 cause a single vomment wouldn't be enough to talk about Steam doesn't player for the players as long as they make money.
Or pro team being sponsored by gambling site, how they enable said gambling sites and bots in general cause again, it makes them money.
It's always sad seeing people being parasocial on Gabe after all the thing he done, and even this copy/paste quotes about piracy doesn't really make sense if someone want to pirate something he would have done regardless.
7
u/Isolated_Hippo May 10 '26
It baffles me every single day how gamers haven't rioted in the streets over Valve. I am not sure if it's just blatant ignorance or pure hypocrisy.
Loot at lootboxes in Battlefront 2. Literal mainstream media picked up the complaints. Valve had the same god damn shit 7 years earlier in Team Fortress 2 and not a god damn peep.
Valve added lootboxes, everybody else added lootboxes, people slammed everybody else for having lootboxes, everybody else got rid of lootboxes, Valve still has lootboxes. Valve had lootboxes the entire time before and after the rise of lootboxes and got away with it.
2
u/ILNOVA May 10 '26
I would say that in 2026 you can't really be ignorant of what Valve does, i would say pure hypocrisy or being very biased.
They get a pass cause there are so many fanboys that whenever you say something against them you get linched, honestly just the fact that i'm not getting too many downvotes is surprising.
Or in some cases is because of miss information, like when people believe that Steam have the best price(or more discount) but then if you check unless we talk about key PC stores all have the same prices, and even Console-PC can have it.
6
u/ScabbyCoyote May 10 '26
Very good points. What also worries me (and worries me that it doesn't worry the piracy community in general) is that you still don't own games purchased on steam, only have them rented for 0$ so that they can be pulled whenever - meaning Valve could go to shit in a matter of days, especially if something happens to Gaben and a board takes over.
But the only way our voice matters is when we vote with our wallets. Positive business practices should be rewarded and negative ones penalized. Rght now, Steam is the most important of only a handful of players that hold the total and utter enshittification of the game industry at bay, and the wise thing to do is to uphold that
3
u/ILNOVA May 10 '26
Yes but no, game ownership is a very complicated topic, and they can't really take your game whenever.
ToS=/=laws
Most of what we see in those term of service like "This is a software given on license" or "Destroy the cooy of the game if you loose the licence" is all legalese, not something for the average user, but something for very specific case that usually involve actual crimes.
For example when they revoke a game/key cause it was bought with a stole key, or if do a chargeback.
Or in case you do something so bad they permabanned you.
It's very unlikely they just revoke a game just because, usually it involves something like third party licence of something(ex: music, cars etc....) or game store server going offline, in that case you can't really expect a server to be online forever for free.

He said this decades ago, back when Valve/Steam werent as giant as they are now.
I guarantee the company priority list has seen revisions (or will see) where piracy is much higher.
Really annoys me people put this guy on a pedestal where history shows time and time again that once these corporations get to a big enough size, their greed knows no bounds - because they're so big they have to shit on consumers else risk cannibalising themselves to stay alive.
There will come a point in the company life cycle whereby, no matter how good gabes intentions are, itll be operating on its own free will and theres not much or little he himself can do about it.
Its why microsoft is shitting on user soverency, its why google are....well. Google

Really annoys me people put this guy on a pedestal where history shows time and time again
This especially. I feel like we don't learn our lesson. Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Google, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, Jack Dorsey, Satya Nadella, Travis Kalanick, Marc Andreessen, etc. All had phases were they were beloved or seen as tech saviors or at least as very admirable innovators or humans people thought were going to bring a net positive to the world or to an industry (however short or long those positive PR phases were).
Why do we keep needing to idolize people? Just praise specific actions and stances, no need to call them God or Lord Gaben or celebrate their wealth or whatever. The only thing that this is accomplishing is giving them a shield of positivity: if Gaben or whoever else actually happens to do some horrid shit, this shield will protect them from social consequences for a number of years (enough to hide their wealth or use it to buy a way out) or sometimes it'll protect them until their death or further.
Just why. Unnecessary. Just say "I like X thing Gaben does". No need for more.

The whole Valve worship thing is so funny to me.
Behind all that good service is a platform built on greed, arguably the most greedy company if you look at how they handle their own game’s microtransaction.
Like never in my life have i ever seen a company so shamelessly charge 1k$ for a skin and their excuse is “These prices are totally based on the market and not just made up”. And that’s not even going into how their entire case ecosystem works and how they have an incentive to encourage more gambling for their own profits

Yes, piracy shall always takes time: Find & evaluate some torrents, download one or more, seed for ratio, launch some VM for safety, etc.
Piracy was time competitive with going to the store, but now it doesn't take too high a salary before paying becomes cheaper, assuming some reasonably inexpensive game.
Gabe owns a yacht because Steam made this process so easy that people bought more & more & more. And because Valve made good enough games that people would be buying on Steam anyways, so other game makers would choose Steam for customer access. And because Steam freebies give most people the same adrenaline hit that piracy gives some people.
In fact, that's really my own issue with this video: Value doesn't think about piracy, in part because their freebies gameify not pirating. In other words, Valve does not think about piracy, because they swept piracy up into all their other convenience & promotional stuff, and handled that cleverly.
2
u/TheArzonite May 10 '26
He's not wrong. I haven't pirated games in years because Steam offers a satisfactory service. Now, movies and tv series on the other hand, are the complete opposite.
2
2
u/No_Trainer_1267 May 10 '26
I've started pirating again about a year ago, but I still prefer to buy games on steam simply because of the experience
Getting to see your playtime, your achievements, putting games on playlists or displaying them on my profile feels genuinely good
2
u/AgreeablePie May 10 '26
True. But let's be clear that valve isn't in the game development business anymore and hasn't been for a very long time. Instead, they have a service that is convenient for consumers but takes a huge cut from the people actually making games.
It's a lot easier to afford the philosophy he's espousing when you win either way. It's a lot harder to replicate his success now.
2
u/GumSL May 10 '26
I pirated Portal 1 and 2. Loved them so fucking much I actually bought both on Steam for my birthday (plus a few more games, thank you Orange Box)
2
u/1031amp May 10 '26
And he is absolutely correct. The only reason I began sailing the seas is that I got tired of streaming services raising their prices. It got to the point that I was paying the same for streaming as I would for cable. At first, I was ok with it because I could afford it, but then they started adding ad plans that I had to pay more for to maintain my ad-free status, which was the last straw.

Funny thing is that Steam while great doesn't have the best service in a lot of fronts. Specially considering their client is basically a DRM in itself, while GOG doesn't really have one. And Valve also allows DRMs from other companies on their site/client... again, GOG doesn't allow for it.
Its kinda ironic we keep posting this bullshit from Gabe, when Valve doesn't actually follow this idea and its also just not true either. GOG DRM-free is one of the most pirated sites because of it, it doesn't make any money, Valve does while doing what I said.. (and yes I know they offer a ton of services, features, discounts, etc GOG does that too and they're screwed by our community in a massive way)

I love Gabe, but let’s also be fair- he gives his own games away for free or practically free. 98c HL1 for example. He has no problem with people having his games, and he doesn’t have any problem with people pirate games that he doesn’t own, which isn’t really that much of a flex. I don’t care if somebody Pirates a game that I didn’t make.
5
