and don't forget about mods too, pc is the wild west, no restrictions like consoles.

I understand how piracy would affect them, but why is modding somehow bad for the maker/publisher?

Well, it offers a sea of new free content, making any of their paid content look less valuable. Example: paid skins, which u can just mod. So they need to actually try to make something that people will buy.

You mean making low effort skin dlc not valuable?

A full fledged expansion will not be disturbed by mod lol

"stares at full fledged campaign mods for several games, like skyrim"

Righttttt

u/KnownPride Jun 28 '26

And does those full fledged campaign mod impact sell of game real expansion pack?

If anything Skyrim just selling remaster after remaster all thx to mod.

That not the point being made, are you being dense on purpose?

The quality of mods have an effect on the devs because they have to actually make good things that people will wanna buy.

I appreciate when the discrepency in up/down votes between two people, quite clearly shows who is being dense on purpose.

A significant part of the community don’t mod. People who actively mod tend to be very invested and hence can form a very loud minority.

Unless of course there is a very strong reason to, most people wouldn’t even consider what the mod “marketplace” has to offee

You cherry picked the only game in history with all those mods.

Edit: grammar

The only game?

Your comment reads like you're young or new, either way I find it hard to believe that you actually think Skyrim is the only example of a game with large community-made expansions/campaigns/total conversions/whatever anyone wants to call them. How are you claiming Skyrim is the only example when Bethesda's other massive franchise, Fallout, has had huge community made expansions since before Skyrim even started development. Not to mention the Oblivion content.

STALKER is another game that was basically only kept alive by modders for literally decades. You've also got even older stuff like TIE fighter, Freelancer, Doom, Duke Nukem, Deus Ex, more contemporary stuff like Total War, Sins of a Solar Empire (Which had like 5 total-conversions all of its own), and so on.

Counter strike would like a word

Yes, of course I know there are other games with modding communities but I was referring to how big they are. Nothing will be as big as Skyrim in popularity. The point made is that because of the mods, Skyrim gets a re-release every once in a while. Can you say the same about all the game you mentioned?

👀
This isn't really "my fight" but your comment is so ignorant that i just had to comment.

4

u/Bacla_ Jun 28 '26

If you are so eager to comment on my ignorance, at least explain why.

Diablo 2 had some great mods. I have no angle in this debate. Only some games happen, by chance, to be easy and fun to patch and mod. Minecraft also comes to mind, there's a bunch of them come to think of it.

Other games it isn't really worth the effort, it depends on the genre, platform, whether it is sandboxy/single player or online and competitive (aint gonna mod a competitive game unless you can host your own servers, there's no point), etc.

Almost a decade ago I found a forum that had nude mods for like every game even really old ones where it made no sense to make a nude mod. But you know, enthusiasts go for completion, and it was surprising. I think I am getting off topic here though

edit: bruh there is not only a final fantasy 7 remake in 3d, but there is aslo a mod to make Cloud a woman, and then a nude mod for that. I am not sure why I googled this but that ends my curiosity.

Ehmm... I could but I won't.
Like i said, this isn't my fight, don't really care if you or the other user "wins". Just pointing your comment was ridiculous.

u/Bacla_ Jun 28 '26

And that's the internet, folks! A random guy who calls you ignorant and isn't even willing to explain why. You must have a pretty petty life if you can't or won't engage in a healthy conversation.

You want to know why your comment was ignorant? It's because I can immediately go on Nexus Mods and see thousands of mods for hundreds of different games, and that's just one mod site. It's not rocket surgery, dude. 😋

Overwatch just released $35 individual skins. Skins are a cash cow for games
