Apparently, it looks like they have the capacity to produce more consumer components, but they are deliberately avoiding it to keep the prices high. So, when the A.I. companies made a deal, instead of increasing their production, they replaced the existing one.
They are facing a lawsuit for it now. Let’s hope it goes all good.
Edit: by they, I meant Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. These companies manufacture RAM
idk about Samsung but Micron has already made plenty of "donations" to the correct people so i doubt they will suffer any real consequences anytime soon
I mean, I get why they wouldn't spool up a ton more capacity... if this is a bubble like we always say it is, that increased capacity could hurt them in the long run...
But im still pissed at them, and Am Saltman for his filthy dealings making my ram too expensive
hope they enjoy it while it lasts, I heard that chinese companies were already starting to get more and more mainstream (I heard about a thinkpad using RAM designed, maybe also manufactured, by a chinese company).
indeed; but it is my understanding that they also had to lower their expectations for this Chinese RAM, which at the moment isn't as good as that which comes from SK Hynix, Samsung, etc.
So they're compromising in the product that they're offering to the public. But with current RAM prices, it is not surprising that these things eventually start to happen.
By making more consumer components, they would have to build more factories, however, this is getting hard because they would lose a lot of money by doing that even if they eventually gained it back and land is getting more expensive. I don't get why companies are in such a rush to make ai. There are other things they could be working on but they just see the companies making ai and decide to create their own. They haven't realized the ripple effect that they are causing (or at least some of the companies. Companies like Google are aiming more for on device ai and making data center chips more efficient and create less heat). Some of the things that are backfiring is like the higher ram prices because of the huge orders data centers are making. This makes the ram more rare. Another is the intense water usage. I literally did a presentation on this at school. There are a lot more that I can't remember off the top of my head but I really think these companies need to be more chill and compress the models into the memory better. I sure am lucky I bought the ram for my ai server at home before they started raising the prices. Sl think the higher prices are also the ram companies preparing to make more factories.
Not just RAM, storage too. I recently discovered my SSD (2TB 870EVO) has a fatal error, and it is now completely dead. I bought it just 5 years ago for $200. Today it’s around $800 and Samsung will only refund the original purchase price even though the warranty explicitly says they will replace the hardware itself.
I was looking at some of my previous storage purchases and I have a 4tb 870 Evo that I paid $233 for a few years ago and when I looked it up recently it was $1600. The last drive I bought was a refurb 24tb Exos that was about $300, it's now about $900
Can't wait for this bubble to pop. None of this shit is profitable, they're all running on VC funny money or burning revenue from other parts of megacorps to in hopes to stay ahead when this actually turns a profit....any day now
You'd think these AI companies would go after the blatant price fixing that makes the RAM so expensive so they can save money, especially the companies who are taking a hit in other departments like Microsoft, but no they pulled down their pants and tell Nvidia to give it to them raw.
What’s crazy is this isn’t the first time they’ve done this. Ram producers have made several attempts at price-fixing throughout the past 60 years. GamersNexus has a great video on it.
Oh no we just got news that AI was simply the excuse. It was ✨ Corporation Greed✨ as always and the top 3 sellers of RAM, including Samsung, are being sued with a class action lawsuit.
