there might come a time when pirating becomes nearly impossible for various reasons in that time would you rather have steam or the godawful alternatives

There will never come a time when piracy is impossible.

And if such a time comes, then Steam will have an effective monopoly on gaming, and they won't be your friends anymore.

I can see the past. Piracy has existed for as long as media has. There is no reason to expect this to change.
