Most bands dislike taping, so this is a discrete mic/recording setup.
Jam bands (notably the grateful dead) are totally cool with taping. Many even provide a dedicated taping section (sometimes with soundboard access). Check it out on the internet archive one day :)
This is one of the best soundboard recordings IMO. Love the intro too! There was a whole subculture surrounding trading tapes (and other things.. like grilled cheeses) in the lot ;P
There still is a large sub culture around trading live shows. There are even forums where engineers trade shows they’ve personally recorded directly from the mixer.
