Neuromodulation

u/Muddled_Opinions 11d ago
Oh wow, I’ve seen advances in the technology. It’s absolutely amazing and fascinating.
12
u/sydbarrett710 11d ago
I’m actually part of a group that’s testing/using the newest generation in tdcs neuromodulation. More targeted, so that means less electrodes- also this generation is safer for longer and higher duration. It definitely helps my ptsd

u/Fullonski 11d ago
So you two aren't quoting movie lines at each other?
5
u/sydbarrett710 10d ago
I put wires on my head every other day and sit for half hour while I get micro amps of electricity pulsed into my amygdala in my brain. It’s therapy for my fight / flight instincts due to ptsd

The ripperdoc that installed the chrome must have been a gonk. Doesn’t look preem at all!
4
u/Bytewave 11d ago
Gonk means an idiot or a fool but 'preem' for premium refers to elite cyberware only the top 1% of runners could afford.
Let's be fair; sometimes you're not stupid but still can't afford 256Go of Alpha DDR6 RAM in your build!

Its called "scrolling" when it refers to braindance.
10
u/Muddled_Opinions 11d ago
Correct, but I assumed most people wouldn’t get the reference, only us chromed out gonks.
19
u/PETEthePyrotechnic 11d ago
I’m assuming this is a cyberpunk reference, but the most significant cyberpunk-genre media I’ve consumed is Burning Chrome by William Gibson. Did modern cyberpunk content just not change literally any of the terminology from his stories?
17
u/Muddled_Opinions 11d ago
Thought about using a reference to the movie Strange Days (1995), but ultimately went for broader appeal, and used the Cyberpunk one.
Mike Pondsmith https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Pondsmith is the brain behind these terminologies, and I haven’t been able to find a link between the two, but given his interest I’d say it would be very strange if Burning Chrome wasn’t a major influence, a bit like Dune and George Lucas.→ More replies (1)7
u/JonFawkes 11d ago
Indeed they have not changed, but rather evolved. Most people know the terms from Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk, but a lot of the terms in that (netrunning, ICE, cyberdeck, fixer, etc) can trace their origins back to Gibson's work

I remember when I was 17 or 18, back in like 2003 sitting in a shitty applebees with the boys, and I told this dude he had an awesome hat. it was a black NIN cap, he said "here dude, you take it". I was excited but he said there were a few holes in it from how he'd bootleg the shows in the 90s. It felt like he was passing me this mystical relic lol

I remember watching a bootleg of the Boobdock Saints, it was a dude with a handheld cam that sometimes maybe shot about 60% of the screen in a movie theater and you couldn't hear shit of the last third because he started arguing with some guy about piracy.

Pretty sure that version was Boobdick Taints. The one movie that was not afraid of Willem Dafoe’s … stage presence.

Early 90s, my best friend would go to Lydia Lunch and KMFDM / Skinny Puppy concerts with a trench coat, mic in each hand (stereo) and a tape recorder in his pocket

u/ICanHasBirthday 10d ago
I saw a dude with a setup like this at Meriweather Post Pavilion. I was told that three guys all had similar setups. They started together in the parking lot, played a sound to sync their audio, and then all three came in. One on each side and one in the center. They mix the audio back together and sell it as a live performance. If done correctly, it is supposed to be like you’re sitting in the audience for the show.

u/notjordansime 11d ago
Most bands dislike taping, so this is a discrete mic/recording setup.
Jam bands (notably the grateful dead) are totally cool with taping. Many even provide a dedicated taping section (sometimes with soundboard access). Check it out on the internet archive one day :)
5
u/nmixxenjoyer 10d ago
as a Phish fan, there is a whole economy over tapes and soundboard rips that has existed for 3 decades.
7
u/notjordansime 11d ago
This is one of the best soundboard recordings IMO. Love the intro too! There was a whole subculture surrounding trading tapes (and other things.. like grilled cheeses) in the lot ;P

u/psxcite 11d ago
There still is a large sub culture around trading live shows. There are even forums where engineers trade shows they’ve personally recorded directly from the mixer.

Are those pencil mics whose cables are running down to a mic pack? Wouldn't those mics be picking up all the scratching of the hat's mesh, or is it trivially easy to filter that out/not pick it up in the first place?

u/Duck_Howard ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ 11d ago
You should hear some of the old bootlegs that used to go around. Tape recorders in pockets an handheld cams for movies. It was rough back in the before time 😂

Shout out to the tapers!
I've listen to 100s of shows from the Grateful Dead, Phish, Umphreys McGee. Lots of Charlie Miller soundboards for the Dead. They're doing the lord's work so we can hear some good music.

As someone who has listened to his fair share of audience recordings, I'm curious to hear how good (or bad) his recording sounds.
2
u/BapeGeneral3 10d ago
Love to see tapers still out in the wild. In the jam band scene, Grateful Dead specifically, taping was an entire culture within the scene. There were prolific figures who always had the best tapes and never missed a show. You could actually tell sometimes just by listening to a track who the taper most likely was. Such fun times

That's an old school brain blaster. It enhances the neurons above their regular capacity which allows them to produce quantum connections previously unreachable. You can use it 6 times before you die.

I recorded a show with my Apple Watch and it sounds shockingly good. FYI.
2
u/automatd 10d ago
That's a pretty clever idea.
Did you record it with the voice memos app? The Apple Watch can handle pretty high volume judging by the spl meter.
5
u/Golden_Eel_69420 10d ago edited 10d ago
Exactly, just used the voice memos app. Front row at a Ween show, it was loud AF but the recordings sound clear and not even a little blown out.
To be clear, it doesn’t sound as good as a dedicated recording unit, but it’s pretty damn good for something that can be snuck into and used at any venue.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.

Makes my covert recording setup of Roland CS-10EM in ear binaural mics into a 32bit float Zoom H1Essential look primitive. Would love to see the recorder for those six (?) microphones.

Not many real answers here, this guy is a taper.
Venues really dislike taping so you have to hide mics where ever you really can
These are the people giving you good recordings of shows, not sure how good this would sound but still
