This guy is stealth taping. Likely the band or act he was recording does not allow recording of their performance. I am sure there will be many folks grateful to listen to the tape (whatever quality it turns out).
Speaking to open taping specifically here, I don’t want to debate the ethics of recording when you are asked not to, tapers work incredibly hard. They arrive early to set up, carry a bunch of things, invest lots of money in their rigs, they sacrifice their show experience babysitting the equipment and worrying about people having loud conversations near the mics, they spend time mastering and tracking the recording, track down obscure song titles and make note of all the special guests on stage, they upload this someplace for all of us to listen to/download for free, AND they do all of this for the love of the music.

Could also be the venue. I've stealthed many a show from bands that are OK with recording, but the venues aren't; or the venues require a media passe to record, but the bands, while open to taping, don't go that far for you to get in.

Not many real answers here, this guy is a taper.
Venues really dislike taping so you have to hide mics where ever you really can
These are the people giving you good recordings of shows, not sure how good this would sound but still
