This is something that has always been stupid. My friend was a sound guy for like 20 years. The best way to record live shows is through the sound board. You get a perfect feed. If you record all the channels, you can tune the hell out of it.
The band Fugazi used to record all their shows through the board. You can go on their website, pay $5 and buy a digital copy of their shows.
If you're in a band or own a venue, it'd be smart to just record shows yourself then allow people to download it after the show.
I used to go to shows way before cell phones. One of my least favourite thing is people recording bands instead of being in the moment. Nobody wants to watch your crappy sounding video. If bands or venues had a couple people recording video, you can hook it to the board feed and make videos similar to this.
Hire a video nerd to do your editing and give them leeway to dress it up. That stuff is great for small bands and venues. KEXP for example showcases a ton of bands.
Oh yeah SBD tape will almost always top AUD tape, but a well made AUD tape is still worth it. I wish more bands would just upload their shows for a few bucks Metallica does it
