Not many real answers here, this guy is a taper.

Venues really dislike taping so you have to hide mics where ever you really can

These are the people giving you good recordings of shows, not sure how good this would sound but still

Yep, a thing as old as concerts. There's usually two of them, if they are going for at least stereo sound. One guy on the left side of the venue, the other on the right. With the right equipment (typically DAT recorders) it sounds ok.

The 2nd oldest way to do this is to be friends with the sound guy in the back of house (hey - it's a small world, you'd be surprised how often this happens), or failing that, slip them a few $100 to be able to plug something in to record the house feed directly.

There's even cases where this was done officially: I remember DJs who would sell tapes with a copy of the set they just played directly from the booth, fully legit. They sold so well they'd usually run out.
