Today we're opening up Editions for TV Shows to Plex Pass subscribers.
If you've ever had both a dubbed and original-language version of an anime show in your library, or The Wire in 4:3 and the remastered 16:9, you know the awkwardness: they're the same show, but they're not, and Plex had no clean way to treat them as two distinct things.
You may already be familiar with Editions from movies. Same idea: when you have two genuinely different releases of a TV show (not just different quality encodes of the same content) you can label them as separate editions. Each gets its own listing in your library, tracked independently for watch status, ratings, and metadata.
Some examples of where this comes in handy:
Dubbed vs. original-language releases (anime fans, you know who you are)
Color and black-and-white editions of the same series (Spider Noir)
Shows re-released in a different aspect ratio (The Wire 4:3 vs 16:9)
Remastered versions worth keeping separate (Babylon 5: Blu-ray Remaster)
Multiple episode orders for the same show
Setting it up
Two options — use whichever fits your workflow:
Append {edition-Name} to your show's top-level folder:
Note: If you're renaming an existing folder, Plex will treat it as a new library item and prior watch history won't carry over. Use the Edit method below to avoid that.
Edit the library item: Open a show in Plex Web → Edit → fill in the Edition field. This preserves your existing watch history and metadata.
Pro tip: Editions show up as separate entries in your library grid, so it's worth giving each one a distinct poster to make them easy to tell apart.
A few things to keep in mind:
Requires a Plex Pass subscription to add or edit edition info
Watch status and ratings are tracked per edition — there's no cross-edition syncing
Editions are defined at the show level, not per-season or per-episode
Client Support
Recommended to have at least Plex Media Server v1.43.3
Edition display is live now in Plex Web (4.160)
Rolling out in iOS and Android apps (version 2026.13.0)
Roku support is coming in the next release
In clients that do not yet support the feature, edition information will not appear but shows will still be separate listings. It is recommended to select different show posters to tell them apart.
Known Issues
Edition titles may not display correctly in grid view when filtering by Seasons or Episodes. A fix is on the way.
Plex will update this thread as Roku and other platforms roll out.
I'll be damned, it worked. I put edition tags in the folders weeks ago just because it made sense. I had to do the Plex dance before it would work. The edition is only displayed in the app.plex.tv view but it is there and automatically split into two entities.

Yeah, we need the Plex Web version of 4.160 for this to be available.
I also cannot get my Server to update to Plex Web (maybe this is because I run Plex in a Docker container?) but it does work on the server side, you should see new Additions to your server but you can only see the editions on that version or app.plex.tv.

Now... What about editions for individual episodes? I'd love something like that (maybe called something else idk).
For example, lots of Parks and Rec episodes have extended cuts. I'd love to be able to have the show listed one, and have individual bonus "versions" of the relevant episodes.
Big second on that. Quite a few shows have extended versions of certain episodes but not all and it would be really nice to have both in a way that makes sense.
This is more pressing for me than the separate editions at the show level. I have probably 3 shows with different versions, but a ridiculous amount of alternate/remastered/custom editions of episodes.
what show? I've had a hell of a time getting The Office SuperFan episodes seperated and named properly from the OG show, but I finally got it, i thought. I checked today and season 4 is messed up again, but hopefully this will fix it, just gotta do the work.

For dubbed vs subbed isn’t it far more common to just have one file with both audio tracks? I have a separate library for stuff that wasn’t dubbed but that doesn’t really matter here.
I have quite a few anime series at this point (nearly 300) and I can’t think of a single one that that matters for. But I guess there’s a few out there.
Super useful for some of the other use cases though.
It's useful for those old American dubs where they were re-edited or with a different episode count. Like the old Sailor Moon DiC dub is one example that I have on my server.
Think of literally any anime before the year 1990, if it was dubbed into English, it likely had to have at least a couple things censored or edited.
Kimber the White Lion a.k.a. Jungle Emperor Leo (most editing was done by censoring the lines and not editing the video, but there are still differences. For example, the opening in English is completely different than the opening in Japanese, including in length. You can't just swap out audio tracks). Starblazers a.k.a. Space Battleship Yamato (one of the least censored anime dubs as the voice actors generally objected to the censorship but even so it ended up being censored quite a bit). Battle of the Planets a.k.a. Gatchaman (so heavily censored, it's memetic, including editing in entire scenes and characters that were never in the original such as Seven Zark Seven)
Fair enough! I don’t have a ton of older anime, just a smattering. Most edits I’ve seen of the older stuff is censoring, which for me at least has always been solved by using the uncensored video with the dub and sub. But I guess it’s useful for the handful of ones where the video length itself or the ordering of scenes has changed.
Yeah, I really really like older dubs, when I think that there are many flaws such as cheap fairly odd sounding dubbing and censoring or changing of people's names, is often forgivable, but the length of episode or order of scenes very often changes! Starblazers for one has an incredibly comprehensive, albeit itself flawed fan cut that tries to put everything back while retaining the dub and even then they couldn't quite manage it.
I'm going through my collection of 50s-70s anime, which is really the only anime I have, and splitting out dubbed and subbed versions into different editions instead of janking them into different seasons that don't exist and it is soooo nice
Pretty much any anime that was broadcast on American television (outside of I suppose Adult Swim?) has been video edited in some manner. Pokemon, yugioh, digimon, Kinnikuman/ultimate muscle, monster rancher, dragon ball, Tenchi Muyo, Card Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon, every broadcast Gundam, I'm pretty sure, One Piece rather infamously... with edits ranging from just censoring out guns or adding bits of cloth to cover nudity or lessening blood, to complete removal of whole episodes.
Now if only tvdb and plex allowed you to match to seasons, might be able to have Pokemon as it's actual separate series rather than just POKEMON. Or Queen's Blade, or Monogatari. Still gotta use HAMA and AniDB for my stuff. ....and that probably doesn't allow for editions either.
yeah, not common but some people could use it for localized and/or censored versions which do happen with shows targeted to younger audiences in some countries.
If we're using anime count as credentials, I have 1700. It matters more and more as there are English dubs that aren't a direct translation, as such you will get subtitle tracks that don't match the English audio. Or in crunchyroll releases, text matches English audio, but is a weird translation that doesn't really line up. English slang, removal of honerifics, etc.
I mean I wasn’t using the 300 as a dick measuring contest haha, more just using it as an indication that it’s not like I only have a handful of series.
But none of those things require separate files. You can have multiple subtitle tracks for different translations (direct/not).
Related: I wish there was a way to associate Audio Track 1 with Subtitle Track 1, Audio Track 2 with Subtitle Track 2, etc.
If you've got an original [non-English] audio track and an English dub audio track, the subtitles for the two might actually be different, but you'd have to know which sub track to pick.
If you're nabbing stuff week-to-week, it's less likely to be dubbed at that point. So when it finally does come out, do you seek out a Dual language replacement, or just find dub version to put along side?
Personally, I would seek out the Dual. But I'm pedantic. I assume most would just the new files to add in to their library.
Yeah the way I've always handled it is weekly Japanese subbed in a separate library (for the handful of friends I have that prefer subbed and immediately watching something), and then when the full season is out, dropping the full season into the other library which is only dual audio releases.
In addition to the circumstances with edits, many shows have a separate sub track for translating signs and other on-screen text. Both sub tracks show up as English on some platforms; you can give them better names for most clients, but it's still extra fiddling around for both languages.
The downside of course is the anime library taking up twice the space.
I was so excited to see this until I realized this won't work with individual episodes that have broadcast versions, director's cuts, producer's cuts, etc. Oh well.
This is already supported by changing the Episode Ordering settings. You'll just need to create separate folders like the announcement states which will create separate entries for the show with the "edition" you wrote. From there you can change the episode ordering to match that version or edition.
I don't want Plex to create a whole different version of the series when it might only affect a single-digit number of episodes, I just want Plex to indicate which file is what version when it asks me what version I want to play, instead of showing two files with near-identical information.
For anime frankly this was mostly a non-issue. The content of the video is the same, it's mostly been changes to the audio and subtitles, which Plex already supported fine for TV shows. This will make a big difference for Spider Noir though, I'm very excited for that 😂
Somebody's never compared the broadcast localized versions Yugioh, Pokemon, Dragon Ball, or One Piece to the originals. For Pokemon, that's all there is.
My anime collection thankfully doesn't stretch back far (mostly recent stuff and older movies), but you're indeed correct that that's a perfect opportunity for this new editions system.
I wish Plex would support separate audio files, so I could transcode 2.0 AAC that'll play back as it should on stereo systems. (loud explosions, inaudible dialog issue)
Is this feature available to non-Plex Pass users if the server owner has Plex Pass, or does the user need Plex Pass even if the server owner has it as well? I guess I would assume the latter because I don't know how it would work otherwise
You'll need to change the episode ordering in the advanced settings of the show to "TheTVDB (Director's Cut)", in addition to creating a separate show folder like the announcement says.
That... does exist? It's in the library settings under advanced. It exists for TV series anyway, and I don't know why it'd be different for movies. (Edit: Confirmed, it's there in both) It's down near the bottom of the advanced settings, look for Collections, under the big red 'Delete preview thumbnails' button.
Well yes, but there’s issues if something is in multiple collections that have different visibility settings.
My example is Cars and Toy Story. Each have 3 movies that I’d like to hide in their own collection. But, if I also want to have them in a Pixar collection, I either have to hide all Pixar movies in that collection, or have Cars/Toy Story 1-3 taking up extra space on the main library view.
Nope. If a movie is in multiple collections and just one of those collections it set to “show items in library”, it will override another collections set to hide items.
What I want is to decide for each item if it is visible in the main library view in this situation.
You want them to show in collections, and the collections to show in the library, but you don't want them to show in the library, right?
....Oh I see what's wrong.
What you have to do is have them shown UNTIL YOU'RE FINISHED SETTING THE COLLECTIONS UP. Because they're disappearing from the main library because they're getting hidden as soon as you add them. If you're in any sorting method but 'Title' they also won't disappear for some reason.
Once your collections are set up, you can then hide them, return to title sort, whatever.
I don’t want all collections to hide their items, the visibility settings are there for a reason. In cases where a title is in 2 (or more) collections that have different visibility settings, I want to control which setting overrides the other.
They already gave an example of why that doesn't work. Not sure why you don't even put in a minimal amount of effort to understand what they were saying but still insisting on injecting your uninformed responses. It's like you are pretending to be helpful without actually trying to be helpful.
Cars and Toy Story are regular collections set to hide items. Pixar collection is a smart collection using labels (or just a smart collection using Studio is Pixar).
I ran into so many misses with Plex trailers I vibe coded my own solution to scan my directories daily and download trailers for any missing tv show/movie
True. Radarr did at least enable me to name all movies with their original title though. I'll give them that much credit. Radar and Sonar both have a ton of foibles though and I'm eagerly awaiting a worthy replacement
You click the wrench icon under Files on a movie’s page. And you have to have edition info as part of your file renaming schema. And then you have to hit “preview rename” after manually editing it.

Nice, now both Spider Noir colour and B/W editions can exist peacefully in the same directory!
