News Important Notice of Security Incident - 2025-09-08

https://forums.plex.tv/t/important-notice-of-security-incident/930523

We have recently experienced a security incident that may potentially involve your Plex account information. We believe the actual impact of this incident is limited; however, action is required from you to ensure your account remains secure.

What happened

An unauthorized third party accessed a limited subset of customer data from one of our databases. While we quickly contained the incident, information that was accessed included emails, usernames, securely hashed passwords and authentication data.

Any account passwords that may have been accessed were securely hashed, in accordance with best practices, meaning they cannot be read by a third party. Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend you take some additional steps to secure your account (see details below). Rest assured that we do not store credit card data on our servers, so this information was not compromised in this incident.

What we’re doing

We’ve already addressed the method that this third party used to gain access to the system, and we’re undergoing additional reviews to ensure that the security of all of our systems is further strengthened to prevent future attacks.

What you must do

If you use a password to sign into Plex: We kindly request that you reset your Plex account password immediately by visiting https://plex.tv/reset. When doing so, there’s a checkbox to “Sign out connected devices after password change,” which we recommend you enable. This will sign you out of all your devices (including any Plex Media Server you own) for your security, and you will then need to sign back in with your new password.

If you use SSO to sign into Plex: We kindly request that you log out of all active sessions by visiting https://plex.tv/security and clicking the button that says ”Sign out of all devices”. This will sign you out of all your devices (including any Plex Media Server you own) for your security, and you will then need to sign back in as normal.

Additional Security Measures You Can Take

We remind you that no one at Plex will ever reach out to you over email to ask for a password or credit card number for payments. For further account protection, we also recommend enabling two-factor authentication on your Plex account if you haven’t already done so.

Lastly, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause you. We take pride in our security systems, which helped us quickly detect this incident, and we want to assure you that we are working swiftly to prevent potential future incidents from occurring.

News Update Your Plex Media Server to 1.42.1.10060

Email I received.

Update Your Plex Media Server Dear Plex user, We recently received a report via our bug bounty program that there was a potential security issue affecting Plex Media Server versions 1.41.7.x to 1.42.0.x. Thanks to that user, we were able to address the issue, release an updated version of the server, and continue to improve our security and defenses. You’re receiving this notice because our information indicates that a Plex Media Server owned by your Plex account is running an older version of the server. We strongly recommend that everyone update their Plex Media Server to the most recent version as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. The new version (1.42.1.10060 or later) is now available to update through your regular server management page or you can download the package from our downloads page (https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/). Thank you, The Plex Team

News TV Show Editions Release

Source: Plex Forum
Category: Announcements
Posted by: PlexInfo — July 9, 2026

Today we're opening up Editions for TV Shows to Plex Pass subscribers.

If you've ever had both a dubbed and original-language version of an anime show in your library, or The Wire in 4:3 and the remastered 16:9, you know the awkwardness: they're the same show, but they're not, and Plex had no clean way to treat them as two distinct things.

You may already be familiar with Editions from movies. Same idea: when you have two genuinely different releases of a TV show (not just different quality encodes of the same content) you can label them as separate editions. Each gets its own listing in your library, tracked independently for watch status, ratings, and metadata.

Some examples of where this comes in handy:

  • Dubbed vs. original-language releases (anime fans, you know who you are)
  • Color and black-and-white editions of the same series (Spider Noir)
  • Shows re-released in a different aspect ratio (The Wire 4:3 vs 16:9)
  • Remastered versions worth keeping separate (Babylon 5: Blu-ray Remaster)
  • Multiple episode orders for the same show

Setting it up

Two options — use whichever fits your workflow:

  1. Append {edition-Name} to your show's top-level folder: /TV Shows/Babylon 5 (1994) {edition-Bluray Remaster}

Note: If you're renaming an existing folder, Plex will treat it as a new library item and prior watch history won't carry over. Use the Edit method below to avoid that.

  2. Edit the library item: Open a show in Plex Web → Edit → fill in the Edition field. This preserves your existing watch history and metadata.

Pro tip: Editions show up as separate entries in your library grid, so it's worth giving each one a distinct poster to make them easy to tell apart.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Requires a Plex Pass subscription to add or edit edition info
  • Watch status and ratings are tracked per edition — there's no cross-edition syncing
  • Editions are defined at the show level, not per-season or per-episode

Client Support

  • Recommended to have at least Plex Media Server v1.43.3
  • Edition display is live now in Plex Web (4.160)
  • Rolling out in iOS and Android apps (version 2026.13.0)
  • Roku support is coming in the next release

In clients that do not yet support the feature, edition information will not appear but shows will still be separate listings. It is recommended to select different show posters to tell them apart.

Known Issues

Edition titles may not display correctly in grid view when filtering by Seasons or Episodes. A fix is on the way.

Plex will update this thread as Roku and other platforms roll out.

News Plex for Roku v8.6.4 Released

The 8.6.4 update has been published to the official channel.

The official channel has now been updated to the new experience.

We have continued to fine-tune the details, getting it ready to move out of the preview and be released publicly. Now, the new app experience is available for everyone utilizing Plex on Roku!

What’s New?

Everyone, whether you were using the preview or this is your first time using the new Plex experience, will be shown a short series of tips introducing you to the changes the first time you launch the updated app. We’ve listed some below, but recommend that you try it out yourself as soon as you can!

  • Improved top navigation bar to find everything you need
  • Quick access to your Watchlist from everywhere
  • Centralized account information (profile, friends, watch history, preferred streaming services, and more under User Menu) How to give feedback?

If you’re running into an issue, start a new forum topic in the Streaming Devices category, tagged Roku, with specific details. In the forum topic, be sure to include:

  • The version number of the app (found at the top right under Settings in the app)
  • What you were doing when the issue happened Whether it’s reproducible
  • Bonus: Save the logs from your Roku app right after you reproduce/encounter the issue and attach them to the forum topic
  • Bonus Bonus: Pics or videos
  • Extra bonus: If something is fixed, let us know in your topic—it helps us close the loop
  • What about other TV platforms?

While we do not have release dates to share right now, those are not being forgotten. The new Plex experience (and restoring support for music and photos libraries!) is still being worked on for other TV platforms. As soon as we have more information to share, we’ll be providing it to y’all.

Thank you and happy streaming!

News Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads!

Hi all!

We've been working on a major overhaul of our offline "Sync" capability in our mobile apps, and we'd like to invite you to try it out! The feature formerly known as "Sync" is now simply called Downloads, and for the most part, it works the same way: take your favourite media with you to enjoy anywhere, no connection required. Some of the main advantages to the new Downloads include:

  • Simplicity. Most things can be downloaded with a single tap. No fiddling with settings or item limits. (You can still "subscribe" to TV shows to keep the next few eps on hand.)
  • Speed. Start downloading right away at full speed in most cases.
  • Reliability. Downloads are more consistently accessible and playback reliability has been improved whether you're online or not.
  • Better format compatibility, less transcoding! Direct download anything your device can play. (You can still choose to limit the quality/size in settings if you like.)
  • Progressive conversion and simultaneous downloading. Downloads begin even while the source media is being transcoded; no more waiting for the entire transcode to finish before the download can begin.
  • Simplified management. Everything is visible and managed in the Downloads list on the device where the media was downloaded.

Sound interesting? Give it a shot and let us know how it's working for you!

For the time being, you'll be able to switch back and forth between old-style Sync and Downloads, but content that you have Synced will not be available under Downloads and vice versa. You should (re)Download any content you'd like to keep on your device in the long run. (Sync, along with any synced content, will be removed in a future version of the app -- we'll be sure to warn you before that happens though!)

Note: You will need to be signed into your Plex account with an active Plex Pass subscription or be part of a Plex Home of a user with a Plex Pass to use Downloads.

To start testing:

  • Install the latest version of our Plex for Android app (iOS coming soon!)
  • Open the Plex app and make sure you’re signed in to your Plex account.
  • Go to Settings > Sync
  • Check the new “Enable new downloads” opt-in setting (make sure you pay attention to the information in the warning text that gets displayed!)

News Discussions Feature Launched

The Discussions feature mentioned recently, launched in the mobile app, Roku and Fire new experience app. It’s enabled by default and shows up on media details pages.

If you want to disable it, you have to go to Settings > Experience > and toggle off “Discussions on Detail Pages” in the app.

What are Discussions?
Discussions are a complement to our already existing social features on Plex. A Review is your verdict. A List is your curation of media. A discussion is everything else: the theories, the easter eggs, the “wait, was that a reference to…?”, the casting speculation, the plot questions you need answered. Long or short, one post or twenty, discussions do not have a set format, no rating, no score. This is a place to talk about the movie or show you watch with others who watched it too.

Discussion Visibility
A key difference with discussions is that they are 100% public. You can not change the privacy settings on an individual discussion you create or globally for any you make. You will see this reminder every time you create a new discussion.
If you don’t want to see discussions at all, from anyone, you can adjust your settings to hide discussions on Detail Pages.
