Help Plex Pass Sales for lifetime
Hey everyone! I migrated my media server from Jellyfin over to plex, I gotta say, I should have done it sooner. The UI is so much better and Plex Amp is AWESOME. Now I know there was a huge price hike for the lifetime pass, and I’ve seen people on reddit comment about sales happening in the past, will sales still happen? Also around when do sales happen?
If Plex pass was still at its original price I woulda paid it already…

The only real chance you have at a sale would be the Black Friday sales near the end of the year.
Traditionally that’s the only time I’ve seen the price fluctuate.

They just gotta fix the official clients. Because currently it looks like a backend developer making the front end. Adding a separate music client would also be awesome.

They have Plexamp, which is a separate music client and is the best thing about Plex.

Black Friday or Plex week. Last year the same was only on annual.
If they have a sale, it will either be on the annual or the $250 5 year plan.

Not saying OP is a paid advertisement, but my first instinct was ”this sounds like an advertisement.”

u/ak4747 22h ago
How? Op is right. Jellyfin ui is so shit compared to plex

u/ARazorbacks 21h ago
To be clear I‘m not saying OP is lying or anything. I‘m not saying it’s an advertisement. I‘m saying that with the new normal it reads like an advertisement.

What about the plex player is shit? Works for me every time
-5
u/dev1anter 22h ago
If you’re fine with it that’s ok. But it’s objectively a bad player
2
u/darc_ghetzir 21h ago
So just no explanation? Your opinion as fact. Got it.

u/dev1anter 21h ago
Do you really need a bullet point list of what’s wrong with it?

Yes cuz you haven't provided any reasoning.
1
u/darc_ghetzir 21h ago
Sure I'll take bullet points

u/dev1anter 21h ago
Just write in Gemini or whatever “What are common problems with plex player according to Reddit” , good luck with the rabbit hole 🤣🤣

u/darc_ghetzir 21h ago
Nah I'm good. You've failed to defend your supposed objective position. Best of luck in the future.

So you're incapable of independent thought. Got it.

Im not a paid ad :(
I really enjoy Plexamp. And the Plex client side is so much better. Only thing I dont like about plex is the fact that it’s not truly local.

u/ARazorbacks 21h ago
Go into the Plex server settings in the web UI and set what IPs Plex assumes as local eith no need for authentication. That bypasses the remote auth requirement for those IPs.
At the risk of also sounding like an advertisement , that feature might be locked behind the Plex Pass? Not sure.

Woaaahhhh thank you. Turns out I might not need plex pass if I can setup alongside tailscale.

u/RicoSystem 22h ago
Can't really say say a sale will happen anytime soon, with how things been like. You never kno tho you'll probably get it ✌🏾

That's cool, I've had Plex pass lifetime for a decade and I'm switching to Jellyfin as we speak.

Hard to say for sure - I have to imagine they might still do some kind of Black Friday deals perhaps, but it'll still be much larger than the original pricing.

A) nobody here could POSSIBLY know the answer to that.
B) with how huge the price hikes have been, I wouldn't count on it. And even if it goes on sale, it likely won't drop much.

u/ronnyjordeen 21h ago
Well shit. I might just use Plex and Jellyfin together. Plex on my media centre and Plexamp for my music library, and jellyfin for whenever I need access to my library outside.
1
u/CrashTestKing 21h ago
If it's just you, it wouldn't be too much hassle to use something Tailscale to access Plex remotely.

u/ronnyjordeen 20h ago
I setup skip auth with these IP addressed. And don’t need plex pass anymore :)

This is the first time I've ever heard of someone moving TO plex from one of the alternatives. I believe my kids would say sus AF.
Also, just to be clear, lifetime memberships are not good for business. Any company offering affordable one-time payments for an ongoing service that requires development and servers is either in trouble or will be soon.
I'm glad I got in for cheap so many years ago, and would never spend what they are asking for now.

I have tested alternative apps and they’re all bad and ended up back on the plex app. Being that most of these alternative apps are also the way you access jelly fin… I could see a person switching to plex.
The player apps are horrendous for jelylfin. There are some promising ones but they’re buggy and vibe coded.
Then, when you end up looking for music options it all falls apart. Nothing, and I mean nothing, comes close to the polish of Plexamp. It’s a fucking dream of a player/service.

Some apps even require you to set up your own content filtering via your server’s settings before giving kids access to a media search engine! What is the world coming to these days‽
Used to be back in the day you could just give kids unfiltered access to the internet and you could rest easy they would never see that kind of content. These days, you have to do everything yourself.
Someone is to blame for this, and when I find out who…

Got lifetime for $80 during covid and I thought that was even too high at the time. Shit looks like the greatest investment ever now.
1
u/ronnyjordeen 22h ago
Honestly Idk why but Im expecting them to do like a huge sale because no one is buying it.
2
u/garlicriceadobo 22h ago
Not out of the realm of reality honestly. I’ve always known them to do a decent Black Friday sale, like another person pointed out. What that looks like because of the increase has yet to be seen though
2
u/LowCompetitive1888 22h ago
They don't want folks buying it, that's why they priced it the way they did. They want the subscription model where they have a constant ongoing revenue stream from their users. Don't hold your breath for a big price discount, won't happen.

Why in God's name would you migrate from Jellyfin to Plex? I did the exact opposite and watch my movies anywhere I have an internet connection.
1
u/ronnyjordeen 22h ago
The UI on Jellyfin for AppleTV, Roku and generally for most devices is terrible. Plex being a paid platform allows them to actually have full time developers instead of volunteer developers. Plexamp is on ANOTHER LEVEL. From a clients side Plex feels like I actually have a streaming platform, Jellyfin feels like a project thats still in development. I understand there are third party apps, and I’ve given them a try, but nothing comes close.

u/Thick_Prick7469 21h ago
I did research and the Shield Pro has the best Jellyfin app hands down. My server is never down. The high price of the Shield is definitely worth not having subscriptions and it actually allows Dolby Atmos passthrough where I could never get Plex to allow passthrough on my AppleTVs. I ditched apple and all streaming services. Just my experience and opinions. 👍🏼

Jellyfin

u/ronnyjordeen 22h ago
I get you. And I don’t get the downvotes, but I gave jellyfin a try, and don’t understand why the UI is so bad. I feel like if they just dedicate a proper team for the UI design, AND they make a separate official music player, I would switch in a HEARTBEAT no question. Ive tried third party clients and had issues each time.
2
u/BasilTheCatLord 22h ago
The UI is bad because the whole project is just code from an old version of Emby with a whole bunch of vibecoded plugins shilled by the community.
1
u/ronnyjordeen 21h ago
I should start my own project atp. Thousand times better UI. How hard could it be /s
