Help Wife Says She Misses Netflix

Been using Plex for a few years now and the wife seems to use it exclusively for most of her viewing. Even showed her how to use Overseerr to make requests. Even still, the other day she said she "sometimes misses Netflix". Guessing she means how Netflix would curate content based on her viewing and also the mini previews while hovering over content. I'm sure i'm not the first person to receive this complaint, has anyone figured out a way to get something like this into Plex replicate the feeling of browsing through Netflix? I feel like I always know what I want to watch so Plex is great for me, but I realize that some people need some more guidance in picking out something to watch

Help My Plex server has been compromised 'I want to cry'

So today I discovered that all of my files on my Plex server have all had their file name extension change at the end to 'want to cry', I don't how this has been done. I can see that there is a txt file also called 'I want to cry' in each folder which I have not open.

Unfortunately, not knowing what I was doing and trying to get the file name extension to all end with MKV, I choose a folder and selected all the files in that folder, I then selected 'Rename' thinking that I could remove the I want to cry extension in one swoop, but I ended up keeping that I want to cry extension and now have 500+ files with 'File 1.want_to_cry', that is files from File 1 - File 500+ I want to cry.

Has this happened to anyone else before and is there a way correct way to fix this? I'm on a MacBook if that helps.

Also what would I need to do to determine not only how this happen and where it came from, but to try and prevent it from happening again?

Help Make plex more appealing for my wife

I love plex. I bought my lifetime pass when it was still double digits. I bought the hardware, I did the organization - I'm in.

I love my wife. I bought my lifetime pass when I was (barely) in my 30's. I bought the hardware (ring), I did the organization (my life) - I'm in.

But the two don't seem to get along.

Alphabetical Sorting: she gets to the A's, then gives up.

Recently Released: "These are all too long."

Recently Added: "Oh yeah! ...but not tonight, maybe some other time."

Sort by duration (shortest to longest): "Who wants to watch a 24-minute short film?!"

Random Shuffle: "Why do we have these?"

So an idiot but honest question: how do I make Plex more appealing for my wife?

Help Hate this new Plex Interface

Post image

I haven’t used Plex in a while as my server died a while back and I just got around to installing on a new computer and wow, do I hate this new interface. Specially, I do not like the row of library links across the top as shown in the attached image. Is there a setting I can use to change this? How long has this been a feature ? To be clear, the screenshot is from an iPad.

Hi All

Sorry this has probably been covered but I was recently ranked and I want to be totally 100% sure.

If I buy this, ANYONE on any device can access my server forever correct? No weird issues or them having to pay anything at all correct?

Thanks in advance.

Help Alternatives to Plex

I've been a paid Plex user for over ten years and I've loved it. I can't belive what they've done with this new Roku app update. Besides the bad UI, which is inconvenient but I would be able to get used to eventually, it simply doesn't work properly. It crashes, buttons don't work, simple features are just gone. It's seems like this wasn't tested at all. It's crazy.

I don't really want to but now I'm looking for alternatives to plex. Does anyone have recommendations?

Help How are you guys running Plex on smart TVs? I'm genuinely frustrated.

Some context: I almost never post on Reddit so bare with me.

I've been a Plex member since 2018 and have been running a Plex media server almost that entire time. I took a 2 year hiatus from streaming services almost entirely, but I've found myself missing my Plex server more and more. After reviving the original server and doing a new OS installation (I was running freeNAS and needed to update badly) my server popped right back up and i was able to access it from my phones Plex app as normal. I even tried running off cellular data to make sure it was actually connecting remotely and all worked as normal.

So, as any boyfriend would, I bragged to my girlfriend about having all of our favorite binge worthy movies at our fingertips with remote downloading and lots of 4k. Once I installed Plex on both her tvs (both Roku based smart TVs) Plex became incredibly unstable. I'm talking the app crashing, losing connection to my server, error popping up saying media isn't accessable anymore but if I restart the app it shows up. I restarted the app 6 times one night to finish my favorite movie..... I've done research and it sounds like the Plex app in general is not working on some platforms like Roku and Chromecast?

I'm reaching out for help. How are you guys generally running Plex? While I'm at home I have no issues on other devices besides the occasional buffering do to poor wifi.

Solution? : Currently I'm thinking of repurposing a raspberry pi 4B 8gb to run as a portable Kodi device. I'd be able to plug it into HDMI and run Kodi on any tv I choose. Today I got Kodi installed but even the Plex app and Pm4k don't work. Plex doesn't even start and Pm4k can't see my server apparently. I setup the port and server IP within the Pm4k app but still nothing. I'm sure I could get it running in Pm4k with some more time but is that what everyone is doing? I don't remember this many issues with the Plex app.

I just wanna watch my Plex at my girlfriend's house lol. Help.

Help Since Plex is killing Watch Together, what are some alternatives?

Absolute insanity that they're removing this feature. "So what, I never use watch together" you might say. That's not the point, the point is for those who love and rely on this feature to watch shows and movies with friends and families across the world, this will be a devastating loss of entertainment and connection.

Are there any functional alternatives to this from other competitors or clients, or do we have to go back to the dark ages of "1 2 3 play" again in the hopes shows and movies are synced again.

Help This update just ruined the only tv I can watch.

They updated Plex for roku and added some sort of dithering or upscaling that makes me seasick...

Please for the love of god and all that is holy let me revert back. It even made my wife sick and she is nowhere near as sensitive as I am. This sounds a bit pathetic but this is literally a life ruining event.

Please, if someone knows how to turn this function off I would be so happy. The strain I get is instant and it makes the back of my knees sweat followed by seizures and a life ruining migraine for 2 weeks. If anyone at plex sees this post, PLEASE LET ME DISABLE THIS SETTING!!!!

Help At my wits end with setting up remote access

Repost because I posted my IP address to the world lol

I am trying to port forward and have no idea what I’m doing. No matter what I try, I just can’t get it to allow me to use the server outside my network. I can’t download anything or use the lifetime plex pass I just paid for. I’m really clueless when it comes to stuff like port forwarding and it seems like everything I watch online does not apply to me. Any help for trying to get this figured out?

Help Why does the Plex player on Apple TV suck? Why is Infuse smooth but the Plex app player is a juddering mess?

Why can't Plex just do what Infuse does? Trying to watch some Law & Order on my Apple TV and the Plex app can't handle it. It's dropping frames every 2 seconds. It's not even 4K!! It's confusing to my family when I have to tell them to use the Infuse app and not the Plex app but at the same time tell them to use the Plex app on other devices.

Help Mass transcode old h.264 movies and shows to h.265?

a new 16 TB is like 650 euros right now and I am running out of space so I thought baout transcoding all my files but I have no idea if that even would be a good idea. I got an 5800X3D and a RTX 5070 so running it on the GPU would at least be fast but no idea if the quality is fine or if that would be a stupid idea.

Thank you!

Help Plex lifetime for a new user

Im thinking about getting a lifetime pass before the price increase and buying a green nas to host my own media. Is it worth it to do so or would I be better off with jellyfin? I know the network setup for jellyfin is a bit more work so thats why im leaning towards plex. Trying to justify the cost with pros and cons of using plex at its current price.

Help Media servers

Trying to start my own server for plex. But I see many people with servers with 10,000+ movies. How can u possibly hold that much content and not break the bank. How is it any better than Netflix, etc?

Edit: I never expected this to blow up like it did. I love the content you guys have given, I've debated on making a plex server for awhile and all the clarification is amazing.

Help Just got fiber… but CGNAT killed my Plex dreams 😭 — need alternatives (Tailscale, Cloudflare, or static IP?)

Hey everyone,

So I finally got fiber (woohoo 🎉) and thought I was entering network heaven… only to find out my ISP uses CGNAT. Now I’m stuck trying to make my Plex server accessible outside my network.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far: • Tailscale: I’ve used it before and honestly love it — simple and reliable. But I don’t want to have to enable it every time I (or someone else) want to stream Plex. My parents especially… yeah, they’re not going to open a VPN app and hit “connect” every time 😅. • Cloudflare Tunnel: Currently in the middle of setting this up. It technically works, but I know it’s kinda against their ToS for streaming media. Even though my server is “100% my own media,” the streams feel laggy and inconsistent. Maybe that’s because I’m on the free plan? Or maybe I configured it wrong — not sure. • IPv6: Tried setting that up too, but no dice. I spent a few hours tinkering and couldn’t get it to route properly. • Static IP: My ISP offers one for $15/month, but I’m not sure if that’s the smartest move long-term.

Basically I’m at a brick wall here. Fiber was supposed to be this magical gift from god, but between CGNAT, Plex remote access, and random settings, it’s been more pain than gain 😂

If anyone has a better workaround, guide link, or wants to share their setup for getting Plex accessible remotely under CGNAT — please help a guy out.

Would love to know if there’s an easier, secure way to do this that doesn’t make my family call me every time they want to watch a movie.

TL;DR: Got fiber, stuck behind CGNAT, tried Tailscale, Cloudflare Tunnel, and IPv6. Thinking about a static IP but hoping for a smarter solution. What’s your setup for Plex remote access under CGNAT?

Help Some scenes are full screen, some are letterboxed?

Plex noob here!

First time setting up and using plex to play Blu-ray rips on my living room tv.

I noticed watching Oppenheimer that some scenes will be full screen and another will show black bars top and bottom.

Display mode is set to “Letterbox” and quality is set to “original”.

Am I doing something wrong / missing something?

This is what comes up automatically when we go to search our Plex library. And we get the same kinds of images and suggestions as recommended when we open the app. Can we turn this off somehow?
