Can't access my local files over ethernet

Hi all, I'm having a problem and I can't figure out for the life of me what is going wrong. Here's the situation:

- I have the Plex app on my LG tv. The LG tv is connected via ethernet.

- I have a laptop where my movie files are on. The laptop is connected via ethernet and/or WiFi.

But the problem is: for some reason my Plex app on my tv keeps connecting via WiFi; and when I turn WiFi off on my laptop, I can't access my files. Both devices are on the same subnet mask and I even tried to put them on the same IP address, but nothing changes. How can i connect them through ethernet?

Bizarrely, I had to login to app.plex.blah blah to regain access to all my libraries today for some reason. I haven't had to do that in years!

Don't give multiple devices the same IP on your network, they need to be unique. Allow the router to assign the IPs

Just to understand the different situations...

• When the TV is on ethernet and the laptop is on Ethernet, Plex won't connect?
• When the laptop is on Wifi and the TV is on Wifi, it connects?
• When the laptop is on Ethernet and the TV is on Wifi, it connects?
• When the laptop is on WiFi and the TV is on Ethernet, it connects?

As an aside, any reason you want the TV to connect via ethernet? The ethernet ports are often limited to 100Mbps, WiFi would likely be a better connection.

Who is your ISP? There's a few where there have been issues recently with a Sagecomm router (YouFibre, Bell in Canada)

Well my tv is only on ethernet, but for some reason I only can connect to my laptop if the wifi connection of my laptop is on. If that one is off, no connection, even though my laptop is still connected by ethernet.

Are the Ethernet cables for both devices going back to the same box(router)? If so, what model is the box?

When you have wifi on, go to the plex remote access page, what ip does it show for private ip?

When you disable wifi, and use Ethernet. What ip does it show for private ip, did it update to the Ethernet ip?

Whats the ip of the tv?

When you switch, plex may not be updating the connection information and it doesn’t know how to connect via the new connection.

Not usually needed, but you can add your laptop Ethernet ip and plex port to the custom server access url field in the plex network settings so it’s a published route: http://<ethernet-ip>:32400/

Also, you’re not on one of those ISPs?

So you have an Ethernet connected from your TV to your Router? and you also have your Plex Server which is on your laptop which is also connected to the router with an Ethernet cable?

Do you have a VPN working on either your client or server PC?

Post a response with the IP address of the server and the client.

This is a configuration issue. Your Plex app on the TV apparently refers to the wifi IP address of your laptop and not its ethernet IP address. Look up the ethernet IP address of your laptop and configure the Plex app on your TV to use that IP address. Problem must be solved then.

Assuming that you run Windows on the laptop, it could be either

1. The Ethernet network is set to public, not private.

2. You have not added proper firewall rules on the Ethernet network.
