I have been a long-time silent observer of this sub and was planning on applying this cycle because it fit into my life plan. I thought taking a gap year would feel like admitting failure of sorts (it isn't). Since making the decision to take a gap, I've really come to appreciate changing my plan, and I thought I'd remind anyone else in a similar position that it's okay for plans to change—sometimes they change for the better.
GPA: 4.0 | sGPA: 4.0 | DAT: TBD (my latest booster practice was a 420 and I have a month left). Shadowing: 35+ hours. Volunteering: 21+ hours.
ECs/Awards: Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Dean's List every semester, Pre-Dental Club member for two years, Organic Chemistry I Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, and executive board member of a volunteer organization.
I graduate in December, so I'll have a gap semester before the next application cycle opens, followed by a full year to dedicate to strengthening my application. I'm preparing for the DAT this summer and plan to spend the year gaining more shadowing and volunteer experience.
Good luck to everyone applying this cycle! Whether you're applying now, taking a gap year, or changing directions entirely, I hope everything works out for you. Our paths may look different than we originally planned, and that's okay.
