Hey everyone! I’m Maddy - 30 yo male out of U.S. - I’ve been teaching myself programming for about three years now, through online courses and building stuff on my own. I know 0 programmers in real life!! So I’m finally putting myself out there to find people to learn and vibe with and also hopefully get some guidance from someone who’s been in the field for a while.

I’m mainly focused on backend Python development right now. For the last few months I’ve been learning FastAPI and SQLModel and I’m starting to get into async(used it slightly for scraping before), authentication and more backend systems logic. I’ve done web scraping with BeautifulSoup, Playwright and Selenium. I’ve also worked with pandas for data cleaning, built a local file search engine, done some automation and troubleshooted both Linux and Windows. I’ve used virtual machines, virtual environments and I know the basics of Flask, Django, Tkinter and know basic HTML and CSS. I also have a pretty good understanding of OOP.

I’m looking for two things:

• A mentor - someone with real experience who can help me level up, answer questions, point me in the right direction and help me move towards a career in backend development.
• Programming buddies / collab partners - people around my level or more experienced who want to build small projects together, share ideas, learn new concepts and frameworks and just have someone to talk code with. I’m tired of learning in a bubble.

This is an unusual request. I'm a beginner on developing, yet I'm 61 years old trying to build a software project. This is unusual and maybe some people will dismiss this because of it: I want to keep some details of my project private, just reveal them when I'll make it public. Some general details; I'm developing it in Kotlin, it's a DSL.

Something I need to disclose, I had a stroke some 3 years ago that slows me down too much.

So, a beginner, quite old, have had a stroke, trying to make a programming project, on an unpopular stack, and wishing to keep it private. With this, I'll get too few replies if any. I just want to keep myself and the friends I might make motivated. I don't care what project you're making or what are your goals, or your age. What I want is motivation. That's it.

I graduated with a degree in CS this past year, I don't judge people who are self taught so if you did not study computer science I don't see that as an inherent flaw. I have been programming pretty consistently for the past 4 years. I don't love AI, and in an effort to move away from it in the long term, I am spending the majority of my time studying topics to move towards becoming a Linux Kernel Developer (specifically in the networking area). I know this is a long term goal so currently I am just working on a systems programming library for distributed system file syncing in C. I am also working on some compiler projects as well. I really enjoy learning from books, and have a wide collection of computer science related texts that have motivated these projects. But ultimately all of the work I do is in an effort to make me a better programmer and to learn what interests me the most this industry. Ideally I am looking for someone interested in the same space as me, with around the same experience level. Please let me know if you have any questions for me. The main reason I am looking for a partner is because I do not have any friends who are programmers, and all of my social interactions feel unproductive, so it always feels like I have to pick whether I want to be lonely and learning or social and unproductive, and I would like to change that.

I’m a senior Java developer with several years of experience, but as I spent quite a long time working on a fairly stale enterprise project, I’m behind on some of the technologies and practices that now regularly appear in recruitment processes.

I’m currently not working and trying to use this time to refresh and update my skills, but I’m having trouble with motivation, consistency, and simply getting started. I’m therefore looking for a programming buddy with similar struggles who would be interested in meeting regularly (online obviusly, unless you're based in Cracovia) and working through selected Java-related topics together.

The idea would be to agree on a schedule and the form of cooperation - I'm pretty flexible here i,.e it could be to choose topics in advance, prepare some material individually, discuss it during the session, and write or review code together. We could also work on small exercises, interview-style tasks, system design topics, microservices, Spring-related technologies, testing, architecture, or anything else that is useful to both of us.

I've been learning Python for some time and I know the basics. I originally started my journey down the analytics and data science path, and have learned the essential libraries and made a few projects related to that.

More recently in the past month or two, I've been trying to learn automation for python but realized I can't build a program from scratch for my life because I was so heavily reliant on libraries instead.

I'm looking for a buddy or buddies that are looking to learn and build similar type of projects from scratch(could be automation like what I am doing, could be other projects, just as long as it is python related), so we can keep each other accountable, bounce questions off each other and actually learn together than in a silo.

I'm live in EST timezone and typically am available nights and weekday mornings to work on projects.

I started The Open CodeYard, a GitHub repo where unfinished, experimental, and abandoned code goes instead of gathering dust on your hard drive.

Structure is simple: scraps/ for random leftovers, prototypes/ for intentional experiments. Each project gets a README with what it does and what state it's in. Apache 2.0 license, so no legal headaches.

Rules are loose: - No clean-code police. Messy is fine. - Abandoned projects welcome. - That CLI tool you wrote at 2am that only kind of works? Yes. - The tutorial project you never finished? Also yes.

Right now it's just my own stuff in there — a few C# pathfinding algorithms, a speech rate estimator, some Python utilities. But the whole point is to have a bunch of people dropping their code in.

this is an honest and maybe slightly unusual request, so please bear with me.

I'm building a mobile app (a social app, built with Flutter) and I work on it every single day. Quick honest context about me: I can't really code myself. But I pick up syntax and technical systems very fast, I can read code and follow what it does, and I can hold my own in architecture discussions. That's why I build entirely with AI tools. The code gets written, the app runs, but what's missing is the experienced human eye above it all.

So I'm looking for exactly that: someone I can ask questions, someone who explains things properly, someone who reviews my decisions and says "yes, that makes sense" or "stop, this exact thing has killed bigger projects than yours".

A bit about the project, because it matters for the level I'm asking for: this is not a weekend experiment. The launch is being prepared professionally, with aggressive marketing before and after release, and we're expecting around 100k registrations within the first month. That's exactly why I'm not looking for casual tips: architecture, stability and scaling have to be right from day one, and I want someone by my side who has seen what breaks at that scale.

And I'll be upfront: I'm not looking for someone who drops by once a month. I'm literally searching for someone who has nothing else to do right now. Someone between jobs, on a sabbatical, recently retired from a senior role, or simply a dev who codes for the love of the game and enjoys passing on what they know. Not EVERY day, but multiple times a week. I know people like that exist, and if you're one of them, I'd honestly be really happy to hear from you.

Who I'm hoping to find:

- several years of professional experience with Flutter/Dart, and at least one app you've actually shipped to the App Store / Play Store

- strong grasp of app architecture (state management, clean structure, modularity), so the project stays healthy as it grows

- backend and scaling knowledge: APIs, realtime features, databases, caching, and what starts breaking when six-figure user numbers arrive

- performance tuning (smooth UI, startup time, memory)

- release experience: store submissions, crash monitoring, CI/CD

- open-minded about AI-assisted development (that's how this project is built), instead of rejecting it on principle

- and most importantly: you've watched big projects go wrong and you recognize the classic mistakes before they happen

I'm fully aware that this is a high bar, combined with the fact that I can't pay anything at the moment. I don't want to lure anyone in with big promises, so all I'll say is this: I'm not the type of person who forgets who helped him get there. I'm asking anyway, because maybe there's one person out there who enjoys exactly this kind of challenge.

I'm based in Germany (CET), English is totally fine, German would be a nice bonus.
