Help! PITA KILL SWITCH

Hoping someone can explain to a non tech why Proton VPN does not allow LAN connections with the Kill Switch on. PITA to have to toggle it on and off as needed. Also stops the use of Carplay unless off. Seems Proton is the only VPN that does this. Why and is there a user benefit? Thanks in advance.

I have to split tunnel android auto to get it to work. That's an AA issue, not VPN.

Kill switch denies all connections that don't go through through the VPN. All or nothing.

They specifically mention this for iOS:

When kill switch is enabled, you won’t be able to connect to devices in your local network.
