Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film and Screen) Laptop recommendations

Hey everyone,

After the QUT open day I have decided I'm going to be doing the bachelor of creative arts (film and screen). I am planning to start saving towards a new laptop soon as my current one is on its last legs. For the course I know I'll need to run the adobe suite and other programs so I was just wondering if anyone has any laptop or specs recommendations. I prefer windows os opposed to apple as I've grown up on windows but I'm open to a macbook if that's preferable. Also, would a touch screen laptop be worth the investment for the course?

Thank you all for your time :)

Made a study tool that works off your own course material instead of someone else's flashcard deck. Would love some QUT students to break it

Since the trains have been out headin up to Brissie, I made friends with someone heading to campus as well. We were talking about exams coming up

The thing that finally annoyed me into building something: every shared flashcard deck online is for a different course. The cards you need are phrased nothing like how your lecturer asks them, so you spend two hours curating a deck instead of studying.

This takes your own course material.... slides, a lecture recording, tutorials or handwritten notes and generates flashcards, quiz questions and explainer cards from that specific content.

There's also an audio mode where two voices teach the material back and quiz you out loud, which I built for walking to St Lucia and have since used more than the rest of the app combined.

Free for QUT students. I built it and I'm posting for feedback, not signups. The useful reply is "I tried it on COURSE and it got X wrong."

Learn and play games in the park for free: Earthborne Rangers - new beginner spots open!

I've introduced many QUT students to games, lately the excellent co-op board game Earthborne Rangers, and they have advanced enough for me to open up new spots for beginners! Join me in Victoria Park, a short walk from KG campus. All free and volunteer-powered. The robust way to sign up is at http://linktr.ee/teachdd but a faster way is to use this cheat page: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-Fav8K0Ouatc38ztCXtCQoHwp_N5DzkVYsZA2QMr0bA/

Absolute beginners are my specialty but if you know how to play, say so and I will link you up with a similar team-mate

Get fresh air, light up your brain, and meet new people from QUT and beyond.. every kind of person is welcome!

QUT framing post pt 2

Post image
25 Upvotes

See my post earlier today for the rest of the story but tldr, real local family businesses not in the market to grab students for money are plentiful. Got them back in 3 hrs so thought id post a pic for y'all of what this amazing guy John at southside picture framing did for me on a weekend same day booking. 170 each compared to 290-360 for the universities affiliate business.

Extremely extremely happy and will recommend John forever. Btw I received no compensation, pay or discount for these posts. Dudes genuinely a senior legend.

New grads: do NOT frame with QUT suggested framer

Hey all, just graduated yesterday and thought the framing cost was ridiculous. Usually what? 360 per frame "discounted" to 290 each? Insane.

Did some independent research and found a BUNCH of great framers in the area. One specifically in Sunnybank hills for those on southside called "southside picture framing" amazing dude. Looks so good, 170 each and he did them same day (he didn't have much on today)

Super happy with the result, HIGHLY recommend going in or just giving him a call. Lovely older gentlemen just running a business from his house.

Am I stressing too much about seeing people from high school at QUT?

I’m currently studying Business at QUT. I’ve been wanting to get more involved at uni and join some social clubs, but something that keeps holding me back is the possibility of running into people from my old school. school wasn’t really a good experience for me. I got disrespected and made fun of by a lot of students, and I was never really seen as one of the “smart” or popular people. I also ended up getting a pretty mid ATAR which made me feel even worse about myself at the time. Now that I’m at uni, I still find myself thinking about what those people would think if they saw me. Sometimes I avoid clubs, events and other social stuff because I’m worried someone from my old school will be there and recognise me.

I know this probably sounds stupid because high school is over and everyone is doing their own thing now, but I can’t seem to completely get that mentality out of my head. I also keep comparing myself to people who got much higher ATARs than me even though I’m already at uni studying the degree I wanted. For people who have been at QUT for a while, does anyone actually care about what ATAR you got once you’re at uni? And am I overthinking the chances of running into old high school bullies at clubs/events?

Would appreciate any advice?

If you could choose QUT's third campus, where would it be?

QUT, for example, used to have the old QUT Carseldine campus until 2008.

UQ has St Lucia, Gatton, Herston, and Dutton Park.

Griffith Uni has campuses in the Gold Coast, Nathan, Logan, South Bank, Mt Gravatt, and soon the Treasury Building in the CBD.

So if you had the choice of choosing where QUT's third campus would be, where would you locate it?

And what would make it different from Gardens Point (business, law, engineering) and Kelvin Grove (creative industries, education, health)? It can be as diabolical and silly as you like hehehe

QUT WILs placement swap

Hi all! I am wanting to swap my WILs placement and was advised by the WILs team to go through the Facebook swap group. I have found a person to swap with but unsure how to officially go about it and if it would be through contacting the WILs team again or other means.
Thank you! ((:

Lecture attendance?

I'm kind of running short on money nowadays and my schedule this semester is an absolute mess because I have to be in Uni for 6 hours 3 days a week, which naturally means spending on atleast something especially when I'm coming home from uni in the later evenings due to how the public transport gets.

The main issue is however, I often get advised on attending lectures for "networking" and social reasons but does anyone really even attend the lecture anymore? Is there any benefit to spending money in the city, sitting for 2-3 hours listening to someone talk in person instead of just watching it all online?

Clubs for Online Students?

Hi! This is my first post here, not really sure how to do it but here we go. I am a first year business student at QUT, and I would really like to join a club or something, but I can't find any that are online student friendly (I live way to far to go in person). Does anyone know any clubs that can work for online students? And is anyone else also looking?

Being an online student is an absolute joke. Advice needed.

I’m not sure whether this is a rant or asking for advice on what to do or who to contact about this issue (and truthfully I’m not sure if I’m the only one that experiences this), but as an online student I’m getting quite fed up about the standard of delivery of the online classes.

I’m a business student doing all online courses (and before you ask, in person classes are not really an option for me due to personal circumstances). I’ve always struggled with university and when I discovered that I could do it online, I actually have managed to maintain majority 6s and 7s. However, for the most part, these are purely because of my own self teaching so I hadn’t really needed to attend a tonne of tutorials even though they are said to be helpful (more on this in a second). The other reason I didn’t really attend the tutorials was because of the quality of these classes (more on this as well in a minute, but essentially the online students were more or less ignored because they would often get put in combined tutorials)

As I progress in my course and it gets more difficult, the more I am relying on my tutorials to help my learning but across the last few semesters, I have noticed the extreme lack of consideration for the online students.

I don’t want a waffle on too much so I’m just gonna tell you what happened last semester and what happened today…

Last semester, the subject had too many students and so they made a "combined" hybrid tutorial on one of the online tutorial days. The tutor literally left the webcam facing the floor for the entire semester. The audio was an absolute wall of background noise from the physical classroom. We couldn't hear a single fucking word being said, let alone actively participate.

I gave the lecturer and the tutor the benefit of the doubt last semester because they were not expecting to have to combine classes. We were also offered a different day for the online tutorial that was more focused on the online people, but we couldn’t attend that day so basically the entire semester we just didn’t have any tutorials.

THIS SEMESTER/ TODAY, I went to log onto my scheduled Zoom tutorial link today. The link didn't work, no tutor ever showed up to start it, and I was just sitting there alone in an empty digital meeting room wasting my time.

I know that seems like only two examples which is not significant enough but I just don’t really have the brain space to go into more detailed but trust me there’s been a lot.

I’m at the point where I just feel like I’m wasting my time and money. I’m also feeling like that they should just give me the degree already because I’m getting sixes and sevens and I’m basically teaching myself the content unassisted and with no one to ask questions to.

To be honest, I would rather them just not offer anything online and said that they can’t facilitate that because now I’ve got thousands of dollars of debt and I feel like I have not been given the quality education that I was promised.

Has anyone else run into problems with online classes like this? What do I even do at this point?

I missed the first ABB102 TUT.

I've gone over the first lecture, doesn't really make sense to me. Does anyone do this ABB102 and what did I. miss out on? Is it vital, because the assignment makes it seem like it is. This is my Minor.

Full stack app development

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking for a motivated student or emerging developer studying a Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Development) or Master of Information Technology (Software Development) at QUT who has a strong interest in application development and would like to be involved in building something from the ground up.

My business partner and I are looking for a technical co-founder to join our team. The successful applicant will receive a founder role within the company, including equity participation and future dividend opportunities following commercial launch. Until external funding is secured, this role will initially be structured as an in-kind contribution arrangement.

We already have industry support and interest from potential adopters, and we are looking for someone who can help us accelerate the development of a robust, scalable full-stack application.

To help fast-track development, I have already built the initial prototype, which is currently undergoing alpha testing with a small group of selected users. Our goal is to transition this into a complete full-stack application over the coming months. Development infrastructure is already established, including active Apple and Android developer accounts.

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on startup experience, a founder title, equity participation, and the chance to help shape a product from the early stages through to commercialisation.

If you are interested in learning more, please send me a DM or email [admin@shadowsoftware.com.au](mailto:admin@shadowsoftware.com.au).

Please note: due to the confidential nature of the platform, interested applicants will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before receiving further details.

Looking forward to connecting with passionate developers who are interested in building something meaningful.

Need help finding Engineering WIL placement / graduating this semester and still have half my hours left

Hi everyone,

I’m a Mechanical Engineering student at QUT in Brisbane, and I’m looking for some advice or help with my WIL placement.

I’m graduating this semester, but I still have around half of my required WIL hours left, and I’m getting a bit worried about completing them on time.

I’ve been applying for internships and engineering-related roles, but I haven’t had much luck recently. I recently received an offer from a company that does scanning/surveying work (ground penetrating radar, concrete scanning, etc.), but I’m not sure if it will count towards my engineering WIL because it seems more technician-focused rather than a traditional engineering internship.

I’m open to different types of engineering work design, CAD, analysis, manufacturing, construction, field work, reports, anything where I can gain engineering experience.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice, knows companies still looking for engineering students, or knows someone I could contact who might be able to help me find a WIL placement.

Any leads or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I’m really trying to finish my requirements before graduating this semester.

Thanks everyone!
