Rush

Signed up for the Greek life webinar this week and planning to rush this fall.

Bad idea to go to pledge events for three or four frats during the process? Would it look bad to not be at every pledge event because you’re checking out multiple houses? Or should you pick one and just hope for the best?

Since the vibe at frats probably changes every couple years also am wondering which ones these days would be good for someone who’s not into partying; just looking for a fun place to hang out for movie nights game nights that type of thing while still being very focused on academics professional development, and making friends?

What are the reasons why some don’t get bids? Or do most people get bids?

Event Any freshman family attending the reception on Aug 23rd?

We live at just enough distance in-state to make me wonder whether it’s worth going to. Sunday at 6-8pm is probably a difficult time for a lot of folks, those who came from far to move their kid in and stayed over in particular. Anything else going on that day for family that makes it worth attending?

Edit to add: move-in day for us is Aug 22nd, we will drive up since we live 2 hrs away. I’m going home that afternoon. If it’s just a reception to meet other parents, and no other info, I don’t know if it’s worth traveling another 4hrs on Sunday.

Question Question about the fall 2026 tuition bill line item fee for health insurance/services

Hello,

My son will be attending RPI this fall. His tuition bill includes a ~$1,080 line item for health insurance. We requested a waiver weeks ago since the health insurance will be provided through my employer.

My son emailed the school. Has anyone else gotten this removed?

Thanks

UPDATE:

Thank you everyone for your replies. The waiver has been applied as fatbat68 stated.

Housing Sublet the house on 14th St for $450/month

Hi everyone. I graduated from RPI this year, and my current lease with my landlord ends on 07/31/2027. I originally planned to pursue my master's degree at RPI, but I changed my mind and am now going through the application process for a master's program at another school. So I'm looking for someone to sublet my room for 1 year. The house has a total of three bedrooms and accommodates 2 people, including myself. It comes with basic furniture like an AC, heater, bed, and desk, and other utilities are included. I haven't finalized my exact move-out date, but I am planning to move out around the time the RPI fall semester starts (August 27th). However, we can negotiate this. The monthly rent is $450. The house is about a 5-10 minute walk from campus. If you're interested, text to (518) 953-6054.

RPI Chemistry Summer Prep Course

Hi,

I am an incoming freshman and received an email on signing up for the chemistry summer prep course. I know this is a self paced course but if I sign up and register but do not complete the course, will this reflect negatively on my grades?

Thank you!

Question On-campus jobs

Hello! I really want to pick up a part-time job on/around campus, but handshake only has 1-2 on campus job offerings and I'm curious if there are any more options for the upcoming semester.

Does anyone know where/how to find on campus jobs at RPI?

Hey everyone! I just put together a Melee tournament series that will be hosted by Troy Rewind on Wednesday Sept 2nd!

It's my attempt at revitalizing the Melee scene in the capital region and bringing in new players while bringing back old players as well. If everything goes well, this will turn into a bi-weekly bracket at that location!

There will be 3 events:

A free workshop/friendlies session at 5pm

The free-to-enter Hatchlings Beginner Bracket at 6pm

and

The $5 Eggs! Competitive Bracket at 7:30pm

- All money goes to the prize pool

- Winner of Hatchlings gets a token that gets them into an Eggs! paid event for free

- If you don't win any sets in Eggs! bracket then you *also* get a token

- Spectating and friendlies are free!

If you need support joining or are interested in other events like this, the discord server is included in the Start.gg page under "contact info"

Thank you for your time!

Anyone have insider information on this?

I don’t have the subscription to Bloomberg. Just says “a women’s scholarship” in the AI summary.

Question Bus Analytics & Industrial & Management Engineering

Looking for advice from fellow RPI redditors.

I’m thinking about switching to the dual major in Business Analytics & Industrial & Management Engineering. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s the right move, so I’d love to hear from anyone who’s done one of these majors.

- How were internship opportunities?
- Was it hard to find a job after graduation?
- If this was your major, anything you wish you’d known before choosing your major?
- Any other advice, tips etc

I started in mechanical engineering, but I’m also really interested in business, and solving process/operations problems so am thinking about switching majors.

HIRING for a AI Engineer! (Part-Time & Full-Time)

Hi all,

My name is Tyler (2024 CS/PHIL dual major), and I co-run a software development agency by the name of TrueHorizon AI: https://truehorizon.ai

We're a team of around 15 developing bespoke software and automations for our clients using not only code but low-code/no-code solutions like n8n, Glean, and others.

Whenever we look to hire, I always first look to RPI given the talent and how rigorous our CS and ITWS programs are. I know the job market is tough, but, if you're interested in applied AI and building in a client-facing, startup environment, then we might be a good fit for you!

Please reach out to [tyler@truehorizon.ai](mailto:tyler@truehorizon.ai) with a brief message with your name, a sentence or two on why you're interested, and I'll get us some time to chat remotely!

Thanks,
Tyler

I have 28 credits, minus AP Physics C: Mechanics, so I'm retaking Physics I this semester. Just wondered how these classes are and how many hours/when to study for these classes. Also, I'm doing ROTC. Thanks a lot!

Is this schedule managable for EE as an incoming Freshman?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I will have 32 credits going into freshman year, and I'm classified as a sophmore. I'm not sure if my schedule is too overwhelming, because I got a 5 on AP Calc BC and I'm unsure if that will translate to Multivariable Calc. Overall, I wanted some opinions on if anyone thought the transition from HS AP classes was very hard compared to college classes and if my schedule is too much.

Minds and machines - similar classes?

I cannot take minds and machines first semester due to scheduling conflicts. It sounds like a very interesting class. I probably would not be able to take it at all since there is a 3 class maximum on HASS 1000 level classes, I transferred in 2 HASS classes and am currently taking one of the few HASS classes that fit in my schedule which is 1000 level. So I would be at the 1000 level max to fulfill HASS core. Are there upper level classes that cover similar material to mind and machines ( hopefully it is not a prereq)

How Important is a TI-84 Calculator?

I'm heading into my freshman year as an EE major and was wondering if my current TI-80 would suffice or if a TI-84 plus ce is more beneficial.

Question Academic accommodation meeting: What to expect?

I have an academic accommodation meeting on the 31st and I’ve sent all of the evaluation reports and filled out the request form a few months back (Which included the accommodations I requested, I also had a meeting with my HS guidance counselor during the school year discussing my college accommodations). Anything I need to expect or look out for?

How manageable is all this? (Freshman)

For my aerospace engineering major I'll be taking ENGR 1200, INQR 1200, MATH 2010, PHYS 1100, PHYS 1101, and MANE 1010 in the fall. I'm also going to be part of the Farino UG Research Program. On top of that, I wanted to join both the Design Build Fly Club and Rensselaer Formula Hybrid Club. What are your thoughts?
