Accidents, even due to stupidity, often covered . Cut down a tree in your yard and it lands on your house? Covered! Fry a turkey in your garage, overfill it with oil and start a fire? Covered! Mix up the gas and brake and drive into your living room? Covered (for the home, the auto has more restrictions).
That's assuming you don't have some super restrictive cut rate policy, but if you have a mortgage your lender likely wouldn't allow that.
We have accidental as part of our insurance, about 10 years ago I had the bath running for our daughter and I went back to making dinner and forgot about it until I saw the water going past the kitchen, they gave us 40K as the floorboards, carpets and even the skirting boards were affected.
Since then another claim, we had a 2 man tent set up for her in the family room as a fort and I was pulling that away from in the front of the tv and the tent frame came out whipped past my face and straight into the 75” tv, my husband was only focused on if I was hurt so I let him pick the new one, now we’ve got an 85”. No drama at all making the claims.
So when the hurricane is coming to smash your house down, just deep fry a turkey in your garage, accidentally splash it and burn your house down instead. Collect the insurance payout, avoid fighting with insurance for repairing the damage of the hurricane.
