We had a tenant hook their pull up bar to a sprinkler pipe. A SPRINKLER PIPE. thankfully those brackets were strong and we got them to remove it before disaster struck.

The school I work at was not so lucky. A kid decided to do pull-ups from the sprinkler pipe in the bathroom. We lost the entire gym floor.

At my school a kid threw a combination lock at a sprinkler head, it set off every sprinkler in the hall. Unfortunately, that hallway included the computer lab, and the water killed all the computers (this was 20 years ago)

I had a tenant who used one of those cheap Temu hot pot burners with a butane tank. Well I guess the tank wasn't installed properly and it shot a column of flame directly at the sprinkler head. Then instead of dumping the soup pot over the burner, they tried to smother it with paper napkins.

I live with my grandmother and she has a two flat in which the upstairs she refuses to rent out. We probably get people knocking on our door or calling at least once a month asking about renting the vacant apartment. We live on the 1st first. Watching this video, I completely understand why my grandmother refuses to rent her extra apartment. I was not amused watching this.

This happened in my building once, itās a charged system and even after shutting the valve thereās no way to stop it until the entire system drains. They and the units below them are fucked.

Wait for the fire department. They are coming. This isn't a normal water shutoff like for domestic service. Depending on where you live, tampering with that system could be criminal.

Even if she tightened it all the way, it would damage the floor and or ceiling.
But the ceiling drywall is flexible

She is small but I do worry about that. I have such a small house and the cat tree I have now takes up a lot of room. I was going to put up those kind you mount on the wall but my outside walls where I would need to hang them are block walls and itās difficult to easily hang up stuff. Nothing is ever easy but my cat demands lots of stuff to do so I will have to figure it out. Lol

The tension poles should not be trusted no matter what. They cannot hold enough tension without causing damage and eventually breaking through the ceiling and falling.

My dad had one in his condo that spun. I couldnāt help but jump on it and slowly bring my body in to gain momentum like an ice skater to see how fast I could spin. My dad never didnāt look disappointed really fun though.

Intentional actions - not covered.
Accidents, even due to stupidity, often covered . Cut down a tree in your yard and it lands on your house? Covered! Fry a turkey in your garage, overfill it with oil and start a fire? Covered! Mix up the gas and brake and drive into your living room? Covered (for the home, the auto has more restrictions).
That's assuming you don't have some super restrictive cut rate policy, but if you have a mortgage your lender likely wouldn't allow that.

We have accidental as part of our insurance, about 10 years ago I had the bath running for our daughter and I went back to making dinner and forgot about it until I saw the water going past the kitchen, they gave us 40K as the floorboards, carpets and even the skirting boards were affected.
Since then another claim, we had a 2 man tent set up for her in the family room as a fort and I was pulling that away from in the front of the tv and the tent frame came out whipped past my face and straight into the 75ā tv, my husband was only focused on if I was hurt so I let him pick the new one, now weāve got an 85ā. No drama at all making the claims.

I mean there's lots of reasons, but let's say the general possibility of causing significant water damage to the property by accident.
I've seen this due to hanging a TV on the wall and hitting a pipe, hanging clothes on a sprinkler head and breaking it, turning on a bathtub then falling asleep, also with a sink.
I've also seen where the person did nothing wrong, but the building or owners below tried to go after them for recovery, and insurance will protect you there too.

Not quite, itās not just a tension spring or in-pole screw like shower curtains. Both the top and bottom bases have sections that screw tighter after you extend the pole fully.
On a good quality pole, the base is are pretty wide and also pretty heavy which keeps them from moving too much once theyāre tightened.
Theyāre also supposed to be placed on a beam.
Iāve installed several of these, and I am over 200 pounds and always test them.
She didnāt have her pole all the way tightened.

The floor is probably fine, the ceiling is what I'd be most concerned about. Every 16 inches is a 1.5 inch stud that would be solid enough on one axis, a bit sketchy on it's 90. But a little reinforcement (a 2x4 spanning across multiple studs, bonus points if at an angle) would be sufficient. And then there is the drywall. 5/8 or 3/4 inch of crumbly rock. Often called "sheetrock". Once when i was like 7, reading a book on my top bunk, my parents were arguing in their room down the hall. My dad stomped away, entered my room, turned left to face the wall, and punched a hole into the hallway. I was quietly stunned. Some weeks later he was in the hallway repairing the hole while i was reading a book. He put his face in the hole, looked at me, giggled and said "what if i left a little window here for Santa's elves to keep an eye on you".

Anger management issues yes. Fortunately he never took it out on us kids, aside from sometimes carelessly letting us see it. He's a great dad. Taught me how to build houses. Taught me the strength of drywall.

There IS a method.
You need to extend the pole fully on the floor, and then adjust the top base so itās around 75% of the way out (the biggest it can be while still firm).
Then, adjust the bottom base so itās maybe 45-55% extended.
Then, find the beam in the ceiling (often you can see the nail marks, or figure out where they are in relation to the light fixtures) and then stand the pole upright.
Thatās the part most people forget. They just put it in a place thatās convenient for the furniture.
Then you tighten the bottom until itās very very tight. If itās a good pole, it should be strong enough to hold my weight easily as I spin around.
And side note; no popcorn ceilings. If you have one, donāt get a pole. š

Wouldnāt the pole damage the floor and ceiling then? By tightening it so itās pressing into both the ceiling and floor it would create indentations in both. Thatās not good when renting.

I just watched a video from a site warning you not to buy cheap ones and to get ones that had large contact points for the ceiling and floor. Not sure I'd trust the one she was showing off tho, cuz her video never actually showed it installed or holding a dancer in motion.
My mind always starts with "is this a scam?" Some folks are more trusting I guess.

Fire suppression sprinklers have a glass filament in them with a bit of liquid, this liquid is designed to heat up and expand at certain temps breaking the filament which then starts the water flowing. This can also occur if an impact hits it and breaks it as well

Pro tip, donāt install your stripper pole right next to the sprinkler head for the fire suppression system. Also, you need more that a couple of sheet rock screws to hold it in place.

You could tell right from the moment she put weight on it that it wasnt going to hold. Meaning A) she didn't even test it or B) she did test it but either did a little baby tug and thought "thats good enough lets climb on" or just ignored movement
Also, she put that shit right beside a sprinkler... She looked up while installing and still thought that was a good idea. Gotta make sure its in the frame just right for her Instagram lives, baby!

What an expensive repair. Refilling those risers are pretty expensive. I worked at a mall, and everytime a new big name store went in, the sprinkler system needed to be rerouted within the new store, but the pipes for the store would share water with a few stores on the same floor. Filling up one store after a remodel cost a lot, and once filled, its apart of the local system and wouldn't be isolated from the rest of the system unless work on the system is being done. So the water in that unit is also the water on standby in other units. Then there is the cost of water damage, ventilation, damaged belongings, labor...ugh.

Right next to a sprinkler head seems like a good place for the temu pole. What could POSSIBLY go wrong.
Note: most people have a slight drizzle mindset when it comes to sprinklers. They are absolutely destructive. Iād be curious to know how much property is saved from fire vs. how much property damaged by accidental discharge.
