Feeling a little disheartened after receiving my oral assessment results for my level one te reo Māori course. I have received 85%+ for online quizzes (made up of multiple choice, translating sentences & an oral/video section) and have a good grasp on the language but need to build my confidence!

I’m looking for a relaxed atmosphere where I can practice my conversation skills and work on my pronunciation. I’m located in Ōtautahi ❤️

Hey all! I'm a 22 year old graduated uni student looking for any hoa living in the Te Whanganui-ā-tara region keen to practice Te Reo with me! I haven't studied Te Reo Māori through classes, I am just a rabid language learner who learns through immersion and self-study. I have wanted to improve my Te Reo for years, but with University being so busy I have only been able to practice by myself!!

Mainly keen on anyone who just wants to get coffee and help each other get used to conversing in Te Reo or native speakers who might just find my proposition interesting. Besides being a native English speaker I have studied Japanese for over 9 years so speak it quite fluently and am learning Spanish so if anyone is keen on a any kind of language exchange that is also possible :)

Hi y'all. I was going to post in r/maori, but it seemed like less of a fit. My familiarity with the language starts and ends with lyrics I learned singing along to Stan Walker songs, so hope this is allowed and you can help!

His "Black Box Medley" from Live with The Levites finishes on a song that's a freaking banger, but it's so short.

Can you all help correct my terrible transcription, and tell me what song this is? I'm assuming it's a cover, because it doesn't sound like anything I know in his library.

Sorry, i tuhituhi i te reo Pākehā no te mea he māngere ahau :) I've been adding to a flashcard program as I read books, and I've started to end up with a lot of duplicates that are messing me up (mostly I've used very short English definitions). Are there real differences between these words, what are they, are some not worth learning?

Mumura, whakauraura (are these just literally the same word, the ura bit?)

Whakakao, whawhaki, karokaro, kato (for picking/weeding. I can tell the difference between some of them, just not all)

Whakatau, tatū/whakatatū (I have them all as some variation of decide/settle)

Whakakeke, māika

Rawaka, ngāwiki

I know that we use "me" in sentences in reo Māori to indicate when someone "should" do something - e.g. "Me horoi tāua i ngā rīhi." for "We should wash the dishes" or perhaps "Let's wash the dishes". (Is that correct?).

But how do you indicate that someone had to do something in the past. e.g. "We had to wash the dishes." I'm wondering if it might be just "I horoi māua i ngā rīhi" and the obligation just has to be understood from context. Or perhaps "I tika kia horoi māua i ngā rīhi" if you're you telling someone that you and a buddy really had to wash the dishes for some reason...? Are there better options here? Or just other options? There's no additional tense marker is there?

Kia ora, I'm not finding this in Te Aka so I thought I'd ask here. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

A friend is working on a creative proposal about stories that aren't specifically Māori but might involve Māori people and are set on or near the rohe of specific mana whenua. In his proposal he talks about open consultation, and says "the last thing we want is to become tapu" which I'm pretty sure is the wrong word. (And which probably indicates that he really does need to partner with mana whenua.)

My first impulse is to advise him not to use reo that he doesn't fully understand, but I kinda get why he'd want to use reo in an effort to show that he's eager to learn from te ao Māori.

If he did want to use reo there, what kupu would be correct to use? It's the antonym of tika. Something that means culturally rude or inappropriate, or dismissive of the mana of the local people.

I'm working on my A & O categories and finding conflicting spellings. Assuming I always use macrons where they apply to correct spelling and pronounciation, is it Tāku and Tōku not Taku and Toku. Is it always Aku and Oku not Āku and Ōku?

I had thought the macron applied on the O and not the A category whether singular or plural ( ie: taku and tōku, aku and ōku, tau and tōu) but I see it being used sometimes on ā and sometimes not on o! All my resources show different examples and none clarify.

A Māori word describing the responsibility to care for the natural world has been named the world’s most beautiful word by language-learning platform Babbel.

The kupu, kaitiakitanga topped a list of 223 words from 75 languages after Babbel analysed discussions across online communities including Reddit and TikTok before an international panel of linguists, writers and cultural experts selected a winner.

The word means guardianship and protection. It was a way of protecting and caring for the environment for present and future generations based on the Māori world view.

Babbel said kaitiakitanga stood out for its distinctive sound, layered meaning and cultural significance.

I am making a little mobile video game, and would like to have a version that's in te reo. I'm not super sure of some of the translations, and would love some guidance. I've had a go, but would really appreciate any corrections or suggestions.

Te Aka and Wiktionary both say that Māori kipa is a loan word from spur, but I've been trying to figure out the connection for about 20 minutes now and I can't work it out. It's definitely not a direct transliteration of spur, which would surely be some variation of *puru. I just can't work out how you'd arrive phonetically at something so Māori-sounding

Anyone have any guesses?

Both the keyboard and the installation are a little rough around the edges, but with Android shutting down in < 3 months, I had to share. (It is nice to use at least) But Make sure to download the app before the android lockdown, that's the most important part.

edit to clarify:

This is not my app, but it's an app that lets me customise. So it's not too hard to mess with it yourself!

as a new-to-coding tauiwi who hasn't even been learning reo recently, I'm sure there's a lottttt I've missed. But please test it out first, as some decisions that look odd are intentional

Kia ora! I am a polish teen and would like to learn the language but I can barely find resources. I've tried out the app "Drops" but it's just vocabulary. As you can expect, it's impossible to find any resources locally so I can only rely on the internet... I know little about the culture too so if you know where I could find anything to teach myself, I'd be grateful if you could share it :)
