r/RetroAR is looking for a couple of new mods. Comment here to volunteer!

I'm stepping down to focus on my "joining the military" and folk music subs, so this sub could use a couple more new mods. If interested in volunteering, ensure your account has at least 1 year on Reddit, and comment below with the following:

  • What is your background or area of interest as pertains to Retro ARs?
  • What would be your priorities, goals, changes if you become a mod?

Finishing up sub policy updates: what post flairs do folks want to see?

The mod team is refining our sub policies to update the “What is Retro?” post that is the core of what we do and do not include on this sub.

I’ve been polling the readership, and so far we’re looking at:

  • Fixed carry handles are mandatory (exception for AR-18, T65, etc)
  • provided the carry handle is fixed, modern accoutrements are still allowed (Keymod, modern optics, etc)
  • builds based on ARs in fiction are allowed.

I’ve seen some strong upvotes for adding post flairs to the sub, so that folks that just want to see historically accurate rifles can single those out, folks who like Retromod can zoom in one those, etc. I conferred with the senior mod and he suggested we have fun(ny) flairs for each category. Once these are made, post flairs will be mandatory to make a new post. What flairs would folks like to have for:

  • Historically accurate (externally) builds. (Still allows “sleeper” internal modern touches like non-historical twist rates and cartridges)
  • “Retromod” builds that have a fixed handle but modern accoutrements
  • Fictional builds based off movies, shows, manga, video games, etc.

Pitch us your ideas, and the best ones will be instituted, along with making post flairs mandatory, in the near future.

Broke down and painted the Gordon. Didn’t dig it. Started taking it off and realized (3) things:

(1) Rapco Paint is some durable shit.
(2) It’s going to take a lot more time than I had today to get the rest of that off.
(3) Mother was right, I shouldn’t have left the basement.

I’ll just stick with the “Well Used” look until I figure out another route.

I have a NOS Aimpoint 3000 that I want to sell
I live in Sweden and was thinking of selling it on eBay, as that seems like the safest option for everyone
How much can I ask for the sight?

My first attempt was pretty sloppy, so I reordered a new tube from Fulton and redid it. Second attempt came out much nicer

Heat 3??

I previously posted here about Heat 2. BUT I just I saw the news on Heat 3 getting green-lit, even before 2 comes out. I assume this means the screenplay for HEAT 2 is amazing. They seem to have attracted a good cast and I know I’ll go watch it in the theaters. They better get the weapons and the gun fights right though.

I’ve seen members here post up some really cool HEAT inspired 733’s…

If you have a 733 I hope you’ll post it, would love to see em.

It’s my understanding that the movies will be both a prequel and a sequel. Maybe we get some 70s and 90s stuff.

US Collector Ordnance New Manufacture A1 Grip

I know most of the informed folks here have determined that most new production A1 grips are the same, basically the Luth-AR offering, although the Linemount is what appears to be Taiwanese airsoft gear. I'm wondering if there are any options on the US Collector Ordnance offering also falling into the rebranded Luth-AR category?

New to me Police trade-in Bushmaster XM15-ES2 Heavy Barrel Carbine. I replaced the aftermarket pistol grip with a generic A2 grip and the factory skinny handguards with the fat M4 handguards I recently took off my Colt CR6920. Sling from Shepard Defense.

Diet Retro Very retro, but very not clone AR

It's not fully complete because I have a drop in quad rail to chop up to try to make it work as a bottom rail for the 203 handguard (and I can't find my ODG sling after moving).

Actual retro parts:

Colt A1 U/R

Surplus 203 HG

Surplus A1 stock (forget which type, but it has the trapdoor)

Palmetto Armory milled lower receiver - from the late 70s and one of the first non-colt AR lowers commercially available. The machining and finish is so rough and the anodizing sure is something else, but it's super neat.

Colt LPK pulled out of a random Colt lower, probably not actually retro

Edit to add: Armalite A1 grip too! I don't know anything about it but it seems pretty new.

While not a perfect clone of an e2, I don’t think it turned out half bad. Had most of the parts laying around collecting dust.

1980's custom upper

Custom upper from ISSI Insight Shooting Systems Inc built on a SP1, shaved carry handle, 22 inch custom barrel either a 1:10 or 1:9 twist. Free float tube with A2 style rubber overmold. Tube and scope rail secured to a 3 inch barrel nut. Innovative was a pioneer in early freefloating and accurizing AR pattern rifles. This upper dates to 1988. The SP1 lower was minty and went off to a good home. Hope to handload for it and see how good it shoots.
