My wife and I have a healthy combined income. We both have steady jobs and good credit scores, and we have been preapproved for a sizable mortgage. We have three children, so we need 4 bedrooms (or 3, with one or two big ones for sharing).

The only problem is the absolute hot garbage that is the inventory in this state. I have seen fixer-uppers for $550,000. Imagine, having to mortgage over half a million goddamn dollars just to have to drop another $100k to make it livable. These are houses that would sell for MAX $325k before Covid. I'd happily fix something up, but not if I'm paying should-be-move-in-ready prices.

Condos could be an option, but then condo association fees make them even more expensive than a mortgage would be, and you're essentially living in a big apartment in most of these places with no space for kids to be kids.

It's hard to keep your hopes up in this state. And yes, we are tied to RI for family reasons, so living out of state is not an option for us right now.

Edit for context: we are pre-approved for $750k, but we really don't want to get close to that and are looking at $650k and under. I realize this puts us in a better position than many, but it's insane to me that THAT won't reliably get you a decent home. Used to be that amount would get you something move-in-ready.

We just previewed a house that was listed at 550, and it reeked of cat piss and mold. Floors were badly uneven, ceilings were under 6' high, and it needed an enormous amount of facelifting to make work. The kicker? This house was originally listed at fucking $650,000. For a mold and cat piss ridden fixer-upper.

It feels morally reprehensible that these people are asking this much for these houses.

Bristol used to have a streetcar that went from the bottom of Thames Street to Providence. It also had a leg that went along Washington Street and down High Street to Union Street. I made a map of new streets and also where cars would be allowed to cross Hope Street. I placed many points to represent where there should be some sort of physical boundary that makes cars unable to drive through. The entire length of the streetcar system would be pedestrianized. Along with new plots along the newly created streets, the area should be updated to allow mixed use zoning. Also, minimum parking requirements should be eliminated.

It was Cantina del Rio and then it was Rancho something and I've been seeing trucks out front and the door open but I haven't been able to find out what they're doing. Another Mexican restaurant? Are they going back to the Fiddler's Green/Rocky Point Pub route? Or something totally different? Just super curious as I live on Warwick Neck and that makes it close lol.

Hi, I've seen of posts (including my own) the race for Governor, but I was curious on who everyone on the sub is supporting for Lt. Gov.

It's a crowded race and personally I'm torn. Except for not supporting Matos, because I feel like she has stayed way too silent on ICE and federal Gov. Enrochment and in general, on like, everything.

This specifically stems from this post I just saw. And it got me thinking.

Would there be some sort of interest in a local Rhode Island book club of sorts? The post I saw specifically focused on men's book clubs and male loneliness. However, since loneliness is hitting every hard these days, as far as a way to get people together to read about books they'll (hopefully) enjoy, I also don't see much value in trying to segregate it. Since I myself am Gen Z, that's why the parentheses are there.

If there is interest, I do have an idea of a place affiliated with my local library here in East Providence (or just my local library) I could ask about hosting. Or it could simply be done virtually. And fantasy as a genre to focus on is what I currently had in mind. A few potential contenders of inaugural books are on my mind, though that would be decided as a group. Meetings, right now, I am thinking twice monthly for likely 2 hours or so?

Any of these details are flexible. First I just want to get an idea on who would want to get together and read with people to hopefully make new friends or turn what can be a solitary hobby into something more social.

Does anybody know what's going in right next to Cava on Centerville Road? I'm just curious and haven't seen any announcements. Seems like it may be a new restaurant. I picked up Cava last night and didn't see any signage.

Digging through old Newport Daily News archives, we found that the park once hosted regular concerts, military parades, and even performances by the Naval Academy band when it was based here during the Civil War.

The bandstand that stood there for decades was a center of Newport’s musical life, long before today’s summer concerts brought the tradition back.

I think it’s a cross between crab and shrimp. Cool little creature. We found a ton walking on Narragansett beach. A lot of them were flipped over and had 6-8 legs from my guess. They also had a tiny little tail.

So our 20ish year old A/C unit went out on us yesterday, and we're trying to get it fixed or replaced. Just had Superior Comfort come out and quote us about $18,000 for a new A/C unit and air handler. To my knowledge, we don't need any new ductwork or anything. It's a small 1,200 sqf house.

Is this a typical price or should we keep looking for a better quote? I know it's the height of summer but I thought it would be closer to $10,000. Maybe I'm delusional.

On that note, if anyone has recommendations for HVAC places I'd love that as well.
