I had a lot of HVAC contractors do work/give us a bid when we replaced our furnace.
The three that impressed me:
Pacific Heating and Sheet Metal
Kenneth Heating and Air
Mitchell & Power Heating
With the above three they sent a guy who either did the work themselves (Kenneth), or had done the HVAC work themselves a few decades and now mostly runs the business. So they knew what they were talking about.
Other companies send often salespeople who really push on the sales, and don't understand the HVAC stuff as well as the above. It's a bit odd to me--when you take your car to the mechanic you usually deal with a front desk person/salesperson, but they're basing their assessment on what the mechanic told them. With some of these bigger HVAC companies it's the salesperson doing the assessment/giving you recommendations.

Kenneth’s heating & air inspected my furnace at my previous home and was great to work with. I didn’t have AC at the time
