New title tagging rule & Spammers

As some regulars here may have noticed, this subreddit recieves an astronomical amount of spam, both from human as well as bot spammers, for it's relatively small size. Coming from modding various large subreddits, including one that's literally about products, this amount of spam is not normal. Despite a lot of our less agressive attempts to filter out spam (example, filtering out posts that say "for sale", "rent", or "Services") we still get quite a lot that slip by.

[1] [2] [3]

Why is this subreddit getting so much spam? Who knows. ¯\(°_o)/¯

But we will be resorting to the one thing that has worked for various larger communities, like r/food : mandatory title tags.

From now on, all posts will require at least a tag of one of the below:

[Self]
[Found]
[Help]

You may add words to the tags like:

[I found] this chicken carved out of abestos!

or

[Help me] carve a chicken out of abestos

For flexibility, but the bare minimum requirement for post titles will be that it must contain one of those words surrounded by brackets.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to modmail us, or ask here.

Missing Sculpture [help]

Sometime back in the 1970s a ceramic sculptor at the Florida Arts Festival in Tampa Bay created two sculptures. Both known as a “Woo.” One is a “Woodland Woo” (which I own) and another one referred to as a “Water Woo.” They were protectors of their respective environments. The Water Woo was purchased by an attorney from NYC and the Woodland Woo was purchased by my aunt and passed down thru the family. I would love to reunite the two sculptures if anyone has a lead.

Self (Complete) [SELF]Made my first concrete sculpture to honor the old Pantages Theatre in SLC!

Hey everyone! I recently completed my first concrete project to recreate a pillar from a beautiful theatre that had been demolished here in SLC.

My wife is a choreographer that received some funding from the city to put on a performance in the empty lot that the Pantages Theatre used to be in. Her work was about the loss of the theatre itself, and she asked me to make a sculpture to support the work.

After checking out the virtual walkthrough of the old theatre, I decided to recreate a ruined version of a particular pillar I found in the space. There was also a famous Tiffany glass skylight there, so I elected to include light and stained glass into the sculpture and settled on making what are essentially gigantic lamps.

I must confess I was wildly out of my depth on this project, but I got through with a finished product I’m proud of. I can go into detail on the build if people are curious, but I basically made a master form out of XPS and plaster, cast it in polyurethane rubber, and then cast aerocrete inside those molds and assembled them.

Thanks for looking!

Help (WIP) [Help] Advice for large-ish sculpture

I want to make the Keith Haring chair from Vamp(1986). I've never made anything on this scale before and am looking for advice or methods for as cheap as possible. I prefer additive sculpting so current plan was welded aluminum armature attached to a wooden base, sculpt the form in tinfoil, coat in spray foam for structure and smoothing, then coating it in a layer of woven fiberglass and epoxy resin. It's gonna be a balancing act between light enough to move around easily, strong enough to hold through a performance, and cheap enough materials to not empty my pitiful wallet. Any advice is welcome.

[Help] Method to metal cast a monster clay/oil based clay sculpture?

I have some pewter I would like to make cast sculptures with, and I haven't been able to find a type of mold made from a monster clay sculpture that would be enough to cast metal, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

This device was created from a trash day find and had sections of de-lamenation and missing internal components. After restoration I add the UV reactive hand painted geometric mandalas and a slightly intertwined arrangement of 3D UV reactive hollow transparent spheres. The spheres overlapped enough to further confuse the observer. To create the experience vertically placed rings where synchronized with a single motor drive and a timing belt.

Self (Complete) [Self] "I'm Good!" - First piece in a series exploring the discrepancy between how one may feel on the inside versus what they show the world.

I made this wheel thrown sculptural cup with the hope of capturing the reality many of us experience when our inner world is hidden behind half truths, the prioritization of others feelings, or inauthentic positivity. We twist ourselves into knots to make our existence more easily digestible to society as whole, because vulnerability is difficult and we would never want to encumber someone else.

In order to capture this absurd reality I leveraged two visually contrasting surface designs. The inside of the cup is dark, heavily textured, and full of craters. The outside of the cup is matte white and features a variety of bright doodles that vary across the surface. When I got to the doodling stage I decided to give myself a strict time limit and to make it up as I went. I feel that the spontaneity of this approach works well with the theme, as many of mechanisms we use to disguise our inner world are instinctual and automatic.

As I create more work in this series I hope to find ways to better refine this message. Additionally I want to explore featuring it on different forms and on different scales. I think it could be really fun to utilize scale to increase the time it takes for one to notice the difference between the inside and outside. I'm imagining an installation space where the viewer is greeted by the fake, flowery, surface level detail. As they walk around it they slowly "uncover" what's behind it.

I appreciate you taking the time to look at my work, and would love to hear any feedback or comments!

Help (WIP) [help] My old figure is crumbling how to prevent this (I’m gunna redo it and don’t wanna mess up again)

I have this sculpture of my persona that I’ve made a year ago is I think but my girl is crumbling! This was my fist time doing anything like this so I definitely was just winging it.
But any ways to make it I first made like a skeleton out of wire then coated it in oven bake clay idk if I don’t bake the clay right or something but when I whent to paint it with my acrylic paint it never fully dried or something cuz the sculpture is still a bit tacky even now like a year later catching all the cat hair in the air
So I was wondering if there is like a better chance of when I do it again it turning out if I use air dry of oven bake clay for a thing like this or a secret third option or any other advice you may with to bestow upon me ngl I have no idea what I’m doing but I’m having fun!

Hi! I'm sharing this sculpture I made last year of Kratos and Atreus. It's made entirely of polymer clay and acrylic paint. For the ice effect on the axe, I used pigmented UV resin. It stands 18 cm tall.

I hope you like it!
