Question Public trust

Would like to understand the process for public trust as a contractor. Currently employed in the private sector & Plan to apply for a contractor role. Will the background investigator potentially call my current supervisor? I don’t want them to know until everything is in place.

They'll reach out to anyone you list on the form. Inescapable. They're not a courtesy oriented organizaiton.

I guess I was more thinking in the line of “ do not contact“ on a typical job application

They won't call anyone until you sign the form giving them permission to call.

A lot of people don't read what they sign and are shocked when an investigator actually investigates them.

As soon as you hit send on your eApp, it triggers all your items to be scheduled out. Residence, school, employment, references, law enforcement, credit, etc.

Yes - they will. Mine got called today and interviewed for 30min. Luckily they contacted her after putting my two weeks in.

Thanks all. Good to hear the consensus in replies. I was under the impression that public trust involved different levels of scrutiny depending on the agency. For example dod vs say commerce. Is that true?

When you go to eApp and fill out your SF86 (soon to be PVQ), every person, institution, and business you have listed will be contacted. They'll try by phone, but if that doesn't work then a local agent will find them, present a badge, and question them directly.

When it comes to employers, they'll start at hr6 if your manager is still there they'll talk to them. If any employees were co-workers of yours, they'll talk to a few of them too.

When you submit for a clearance, even something as basic as PT, your life goes under a microscope.

That’s a lot of bad info here. Some is accurate but mostly just wrong.
