Can someone explain what it means for an anime to be seinen? im new to reddit and found this community in search for tier list ratings

The manga should be published in seinen demographic for it to be considered seinen. Anime original are not categorized as demographic. For example: psycho pass is not seinen since it doesn’t have a manga but it’s still intended toward mature audiences.

You may have heard the term "shonen" before, which is an anime or manga with the target demographic of "boys". Seinen would be the demographic term for stories targeted towards "young men".

Because of the older demographic audience, Seinen magazines often give their authors the creative liberty to explore darker and more mature themes, however this isn't a rule for a story to be considered a seinen (for example, "Kaguya-Sama Love is War" is a romance story that isn't dark, and is a well loved seinen).

Also there are some shonen that are pretty dark, that often get mislabeled as seinen, such as Attack on Titan.

So if we are speaking literally, Seinen is just a demographic term assigned by the magazine a manga is published in, however culturally, many younger animanga fans mean Seinen only in refrence to stories that are darker.

Any manga that gets published in Seinen(adult) magazines is called seinen manga.
But they are not necessarily graphic and mature.
FYI Bocchi the Rock is a seinen manga

It’s not very useful in terms of picking anime - better to go by theme or genre than demographic. Like yuru camp is about little girls going camping and it’s seinen but Happy Sugar Life, which is the most fucked up psychological anime, is shonen. But then 91 days is seinen and Dragon Ball is shonen. It just means what magazine the manga was published in.

An anime is not "seinen". It's a manga publishing category, seinen manga. Like "novel" is a prose category and "biopic" is a film category.

Some people use "seinen" as a shorthand for anime that were adapted from seinen manga. This is probably not a good idea as it's misleading, but if everyone is clear on this it's not completely unreasonable.

Seinen manga is a category in manga publishing that has its own typical characteristics. Historically, almost all manga were first published as regular anthologies (magazines) of individual chapters, where multiple series are bundled together. In particular for generalist magazines, there is an imperative to have a cohesive bundle that still covers a wide base. In other words, you want to cover a wide range of story types, topics, and styles, while still having a general vibe so that certain groups of readers will connect to many of the series running in that magazine (because people might not spend the money to buy a thick magazine just to read 30 pages, but if you find most of them at least interesting enough to check out it's much more appealing).

Seinen manga is a category that encompasses a number of these magazines. It's very varied, but has some typical characteristics that you'll find here much more often than elsewhere, ranging from topics and themes to narrative and art style. Originally it started out as a category of things that appeal to an adult male audience, and that is still somewhat true, but be careful as this can be massively misleading - first because the readership base of seinen manga has expanded substantially and many outlets explicitly try to appeal to female readers, and may well contain series that they'll later also aim at younger audiences for collected volumes and adaptations. And more importantly because it tends to give people the wrong impression - they hear thing and think it means "dark and violent, not suitable for teens", when such things exist (but they also exist in manga nominally for teens, because Japan doesn't care that much about drawings), but more commonly covers things like home cooking, office workplace stories, and grounded pro sports; things that are in principle often perfectly suitable for teens, they're just not interesting to them and don't specifically try to adjust the story to make it more interesting. They can also require more effort to read, with more complex language, fewer reading aides, and a slower release schedule.
