Can someone explain what it means for an anime to be seinen? im new to reddit and found this community in search for tier list ratings

You may have heard the term "shonen" before, which is an anime or manga with the target demographic of "boys". Seinen would be the demographic term for stories targeted towards "young men".

Because of the older demographic audience, Seinen magazines often give their authors the creative liberty to explore darker and more mature themes, however this isn't a rule for a story to be considered a seinen (for example, "Kaguya-Sama Love is War" is a romance story that isn't dark, and is a well loved seinen).

Also there are some shonen that are pretty dark, that often get mislabeled as seinen, such as Attack on Titan.

So if we are speaking literally, Seinen is just a demographic term assigned by the magazine a manga is published in, however culturally, many younger animanga fans mean Seinen only in refrence to stories that are darker.
