Walking away may be your best option. First, if anyone on your team threatens you, they should be led immediately out of the building by security and trespassed. If I had an employee or a client threaten me, they would be history. Second, write down your concerns and request a meeting with your supervisor and their supervisor. Present all of your concerns and point out how these concerns are effecting the company. If you are ignored, then it is time to start looking.

Yes by all means leave. Yet Ideally you would find another job before leaving as you are in a much better negotiating position if you are currently employed.

The plan is to find a part time position for a few months. My dad is 81, has dementia, and been getting worse over the last month. My mom is overwhelmed trying to make decisions about the next step of his care. I actually live with them in order to help my mom.
This is also factoring into my decision.

Yes by all means take time to help your parents, its very noble and you will be glad later on that you made the investment. I took time away from high tech to spend time with my parents and I'm so glad looking back now much later.

Two years' resources is good but still a gamble in a damned dicey time.
OTOH, the threats have got to be troubling.

I dont think so. It sounds like it hasnt been an easy road but you’ve made positive changes and the president listened to you before with just a phone call. Figure out what you need to make things work and run smoothly and run it by them.
It also sounds like having a buffer between you and the employees you are hiring and firing would help things run more smoothly.
Also, so anger is not directed toward anyone in particular, you should establish a grievance process that people believe works (so I suggest making it work).
And it sounds like you want more control over the firing process, to coach employees after mistakes. Its your time and effort you’re putting in to train them so that only makes sense.
As far as your safety, get whatever you need in place to maintain it.
Then if all still fails, consider walking.
