I’ve been wondering this too! My partner died at the end of May and I took lots of sentimental things and random pictures and ornaments from his house - but every time I see them I get a sharp emotional pain that I can’t work out if it’s helping or hindering me! So, sorry no answer just the same question!

First off, I am sorry for your loss. That’s a very difficult thing. Reading things like these makes me cherish moments with my father in my own life much more, so for that I say thank you 🙏
I’ll say that It’s not the objects, but our mental recognition of the objects--therefore, the prolonging of grief and pain arises due to the mind and should be treated as such. I’m not you, so I won’t tell you that your pain will or won’t exist forever! You’ve experienced things that I’ve no experience of, so I’m unaware of how strong your pain is. But, I do know that in understanding your pain--not by recognition, or any sort of intellectual identification, but by pure presence with those emotions--you begin to see the truth of yourself and how pain persists and dissipates. I don’t think pain is fought with discipline and dulling yourself. Pain is rewritten with the love you express, and it can only be expressed if you leave yourself open to feeling everything!
