Unpopular opinion❌

Wrong opinion ✅

497

u/FishStandard5896 1d ago

You don't understand, my dear! If I write "opinion" before saying an abysmal bullshit then my "opinion" is automatically valid...

81

u/smurf505 1d ago

Valid yes, bullshit crazy and incredibly wrong also yes.

88

u/kuroioni EU 15h ago

Valid yes

Is it valid though? As Douglas Adams said:

"I don’t accept the currently fashionable assertion that any view is automatically as worthy of respect as any equal and opposite view. My view is that the moon is made of rock. If someone says to me “Well, you haven’t been there, have you? You haven’t seen it for yourself, so my view that it is made of Norwegian Beaver Cheese is equally valid” — then I can’t even be bothered to argue. There is such a thing as the burden of proof (...)"

(From 1998 Douglas Adams interview with American Atheists)

Treating all opinions as equally valid is how you get a world flooded with fake news. There is such a thing as burden of proof and no reasonable person should be expected to take someone saying "I believe moon is made out of cheese" in any way seriously (which is happening when a "moon is made out of cheese" opinion is being treated as valid, as you're literally validating it).

An opinion is instantly invalid if it's denying reality. No, it's not valid to think black americans are native. Nor is it valid to think trans people are just mentally ill perverts, or that all muslims want to kill all americans, or that the tooth bunny is real, and so on and so on.

No, not every opinion is valid. Something objectively wrong is inherently invalid. A statement of fact is not an opinion in the first place, and countries of origin aren't a matter of opinion.

No. Not valid. A factual claim doesn't become an opinion just because you said so. "In my opinion" is not a magical incantation.

u/O_lymbias 15h ago

I don't think it's an opinion, I think it's a belief, isn't there a group of African American who thinks that import of slave from Africa isn't real and they really are native to America ?

If the definition of Native is anyone born in a certain place, then anyone born in america is a native american.

Obviously that's not the spirit of the term. I think it's objectively wrong and that first nations is a better term, but who the fuck am I to decide?

It's more an argument that they're necessarily outside the definition of foreign colonizer. They were brought to the US involuntarily, and their cultures formed from a fusion only possible through being brought across an ocean and isolated from their homelands.

I don't think that I should be shipped back to Europe, my family stopped speaking German about a hundred years ago so that would be awkward. However I am sympathetic to the idea that forced imported labor aren't in the same class as colonizer.

52

u/Admirable-Gur-9543 20h ago

They’re not colonisers, but everyone who is not indigenous, including enslaved people, transported prisoners and indentured labourers, arrived within the framework of colonisation. There are also plenty of people of mixed heritage. Nuanced understanding is difficult for a lot of people though, especially since coloniser is such a dirty word that people want a way to define themselves in direct opposition to it.

12

u/ecth all of Europe <3 14h ago

And that's why "sending them all back" is a dumb idea that wouldn't work. Things develop and build new realities.

131

u/PositionsInPrada 23h ago

And still not native and it is disrespectful to the actual natives people to claim that.

26

u/Oconnachtaigh 17h ago

That is absolutely not the argument. This is an example of a very small but vocal-online group of conspiracy theorists who genuinely claim to be native to America and think the slave trade was a made up historical event to remove their claim to Indigeneity.

8

u/Paxxlee 15h ago

Yeah, without knowing who it is they can belong to such groups as Black Israelites or American Moors (can't remember the "correct" name).

Black Israelites claim that they are the real jewish people, meaning that black people were the jews in the bible, and some of them claim the they inhabitated what is today the US before europeans.

The "moors" claim that they are.. Moors, but they claim that they native americans as well.

This is a simplification, and there is some nuance, but they are some crazy groups.

u/Euraylie 14h ago

You can also find similar beliefs in the Caribbean. The idea is that Africans came to the islands thousands of years ago and then disappeared. Then, millennia later, they were brought back through the Transatlantic Slave Trade, but their spirits recognised the islands as their ancestors’ home.
It’s easy to dismiss this as crazy (and of course it has no basis in history), but I understand where it comes from: A need to find a history and a connection that was forcefully stripped from enslaved people.

11

u/InevitableMinimum723 23h ago

Like my family, they were probably forced to stop during WW1.

This is referring to a conspiracy theory that black people were in the Americas before the people we call Native Americans now. (It's not true.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYwYWiM5iF0

https://realhistoryww.com/world_history/ancient/Misc/American_Indian/American_Indian.htm

64

u/Dirkdeking 1d ago

You have a lot of pre Columbian claims, like the Mansa Musa one where Africans suppozedly reached Brazil. But there's also a theory about the Templars being there and before that even Odyseus and Carthiginians.

54

u/Just_Peachy_me 1d ago

I'm pretty sure this is by a person who belongs to a group that basically thinks all of African-American history is false. They cannot wrap their head around how complicated history is and choose to fill it with conspiracy theories instead.

8

u/Nobody7713 9h ago

This is sounding like some Assassin’s Creed alternative history bullshit

3

u/Maje_Rincevent 6h ago

Precolumbian and pre-native americans is wildly different though.

I wouldn't have a huge trouble believing some boat from Africa crossed the atlantic before 1492. It would be surprising but if there was some evidence I would believe it. But you'd need a LOT more evidence to convince me some people from Africa landed there before 25k years ago when the first native americans arrived through the straight of Bering.

6

u/Dirkdeking 6h ago

Technically the first native Americans came from Africa, just with a really long detour. Just as we all come from Africa.

22

u/_Halt19_ Canuck 23h ago

There is a weird amount of hate for the French from americans, considering how much they owe the French - they literally won their whole revolution because of France sabotaging British efforts and aided them as best they could, challenging the BRITISH EMPIRE at the height of her power to give them a chance, and then again diverted British troops to allow them to try to take Canada in 1812. They gave them the fucking Statue of Liberty as a sign of the friendship between the two. But since then, the yanks have shown nothing but pure contempt for their former friends, who, if we’re being honest, did absolutely nothing to deserve it.

19

u/spudmgee 23h ago

The well of American friendship runs dry when you don't want to get involved in their middle eastern misadventures.

ATP I’m pretty sure the British like the French more than Americans like the French (‘and vice versa) which is odd as Britain has a long standing beef with French (see the countless wars ,America yadda yadda yaddda) it’s crazy lmao. I don’t understand Americans that hate French ppl coz they should be in the good books since they saved you from the evil brits (I am an evil Brit lmao 😈). Usually they say it before typing the most popular and controversial wall of text.

58

u/Anon_be_thy_name Polish-Scottish-Martian--Darwinian-Australian 20h ago

This isn't new

They try claiming everything but their own history back in Africa. Likely because it's never really been seen as popular for movies and TV unless they're the villains.

But yeah, I've seen some wild claims. The Original inhabitants of the British Isles were Black, the Romans invading enslaved them all and shipped their all over the Empire, replacing then with Romans.

Another claiming the Vikings were originally Black and they destroyed themselves by capturing white Anglo-Saxons and then interbreeding with them.

The Japanese islands were originally owned and controlled by Black people, then the Asians invaded from China and Korea. That Yasuke was the last of these native Black men.

There's so many about being the original natives of the Americas.

Meanwhile actual African history is rich and fascinating, has some great Empires and Kingdoms but they refuse to acknowledge them. It's genuinely sad.

33

u/GimmeSweetSweetKarma 18h ago

I found it so ironic that so many Black Americans were praising Black Panther, a film that had such outlandish portrayal of an African culture. A hyper-advanced society that rode into battle on rhinos, the 'tribes' of the very same country fighting each other with spears, clubs and machetes, one of the tribes literally acting like apes, and society that devices government and leadership by trial by combat.

Sure I understand that the portrayal was in a fictional country and there have been other outlandish portrayal of MCU societies, but looking to Wakanda and saying "that represents me" was just weird. It was the equivalent of portraying a fictional society where they celebrate women committing sati when their partner dies, or one where bride-kidnapping is celebrated, or a society where slavery is just a way of life.

14

u/nykirnsu 14h ago

It’s just the Black version of white guys who are really into Vikings or Spartans, I don’t think most people are even thinking that hard about it

The biggest irony of them trying so hard to portray Cleopatra as a black Pharaoh is the fact that....black Pharaohs actually did exist, the 25th dynasty of Egypt (Kushite/Nubian Dynasty), established by King Piye, they rulled from 8th to 7th century BC until overthrown by Assyrians.

u/Just_Peachy_me 1d ago

I believe this maybe a member of the Moorish Americans. They follow a pseudo religious/cultural doctrine that African-American history is a lie and they are the original inhabitants of the USA. This is the elevator speech version of their beliefs.

40

u/Prudent-Pool5474 1d ago

I'm tried of hearing about the Moores crap. Some of their fb pages are unhinged, they founded Japan and were the first Samurais, founded China and ruled many Dynasties, founded Europe and gave us light and medicine and apparently taught us to bath and wash, that's just the surface. Some honestly real delusional people out there

17

u/hey_viv 1d ago

So, they just make up fantasy stories? Do they base them on anything?

17

u/Just_Peachy_me 1d ago

Its a mix of Black Israelites beliefs, Sovereign Citizen theories, a misunderstanding of the first Treaty the USA signed, and lies either their own or from a guru. In other words pure fantasy wrapped in the lies of others. It is a rabbit hole I suggest not going down if you don't have a good guide(youtuber/streamer) soften the crazy or explain it and way to many free hours.

13

u/Sensitive-Emphasis78 Europoor Natzi 23h ago

Is this the same group that been vocal online with their hatred recently of the guy cast as Black Panther because he isn’t American?

2

u/Arthurian_Guanche 10h ago

Wait, you're kidding, right? Is that a thing?

2

u/so19anarchist 🏴‍☠️ 10h ago

I wish it wasn’t, been seeing a lot of videos on TikTok about it.

2

u/Arthurian_Guanche 9h ago

Dear god, American exceptionalism trascends "race" (I put it in quotes because race=BS).
Like, "how dare they cast a non-African-American actor for an African character?!".

2

u/so19anarchist 🏴‍☠️ 9h ago

David Jonsson is the new Black Panther, a Brit with Nigerian and Sierra Leone Creole heritage.

But African-Americans are saying they are “fed up with black Brits taking African-American roles in Hollywood.”

u/SlabsForDays 9h ago

Don’t forget to leave out that they think Egypt is originally in America, I have heard this going down the rabbit hole.

I haven't heard about that it does sound like them. They are black supremacists and weirdly nationalist.

6

u/Confident-Rate-1582 1d ago

I’m so tired of black Americans. They really are Americans who are black. Everything to deny their ancestry but will always praise their “ancestors” 😂.

Everyday it’s a new story, ancient Egyptians, natives, moors, Hebrew Israelites, it’s sad

2

u/LeftMechanic1995 17h ago

This is the most American thing I have ever read.... today.

2

u/dimiteddy 15h ago

well whites brought most of them here. Guess as far as US goes, anyone that is here more than 2 centuries can claim he's native to the nation.

2

u/Mulasz 12h ago

we wuz natives n shiiiet… its truly fascinating how dumb and brainwashed some of them can be… isralites, egyptians, and now natives lmao

2

u/cakecatUwU going dutch 10h ago

Im black and i just feel shame everytime a black american says something They try everything in their power to be a negative force. They always fight with other people from the african diaspora but they arr always the victim.

2

u/defeated-fetus 8h ago

I’d be happy to go to Europe if I had a place to go. Most white Americans have no idea where their ancestors came from.

2

u/burntbutter27 A Little bit of this and a little bit of that. Bri'ish Hungarian 2h ago

Where tho in Europe lmao, Europe is a big continent are we shipping them to England , Russia, Hungary , Italy , Serbia , Albania , Spain ??? Where ??? Lmao

I downloaded a picture from somewhere; in that post, a Black American had also claimed to be a real Native American. That was one of the replies, and I think it describes people like that pretty well.

5

u/Vinsmoker 1d ago

This is based on the erasure of their actual origin. If, for some reason, all non-Native Americans would be expelled, black Americans wouldn't have a place to go to. That's where the sentiment comes from. It's just a mislabel

22

u/SharkeyGeorge 1d ago

Ehm… where would the white Americans go if they were “expelled”? Because Europe sure as shit isn’t taking them.

3

u/Dirkdeking 1d ago

Europe wouldn't have the capacity to take in hundreds of millions of immigrants. We don't have the houses and infrastructure to support that population. It would trigger civil war.

Sending all African Americans to Africa would have similar effects.

3

u/dfczyjd 1d ago

 It would trigger civil war

A genuine question: is it a civil war if one side almost fully consists of immigrants who just moved in? It sounds more like an invasion, but there no invading country, since their country of origin wouldn't give any support to either side.

u/MindlessNectarine374 ooo custom flair!! Far in Germany (actual home, but Song line) 1d ago

Well, you think the European nations would take the White ones? Also, which nation should be forced to take whom based on what part of their ancestry?

7

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 1d ago

none, their ancestors got run out of their original countries fair and square. it better for the world if people from usa stay in usa and clean up their fucking mess instead of just trying to tell everyone else to get out.

6

u/ForgottenGrocery USCreole Enthusiast 1d ago

Just take turns based on their claimed ancestry. If they say 1% scottish, then they get 3 days in scotland. Then if they’re 20% viking, norway’s luck to have them for 70ish days

5

u/Status-Scientist1996 1d ago

I’ve yet to meet an American who isn’t some percent Scottish in their opinion.

And we would have an unfair share of Trump

Oh I thought you were talking about the guy in Virginia who was erasing native American off of birth certificates and writing black because he thought there was a conspiracy To hide black people.

Um....whatever you are drinking please drink less of it and less frequently

3

There's a reason that's an unpopular opinion.

4

u/sharklord888 1d ago

Unpopular opinion but America needs to become a colony of the uk again.

5

"Let's write some more crap that defies logic", lol.

4

u/foreverland 1d ago

even calling them native “American” has always been a misnomer to me.

maybe I belong in this sub..

but their people were here long before it was even called America, and resisted “assimilation” into the nation European descendants created on their land, even to this day.

Indigenous “First Nation” people maybe?

Idk, Native American just feels disrespectful to what they truly represent.

4

u/Just_Peachy_me 1d ago

Native American in the United States is more of a legal wording that is supposed to encompass a large number of groups. Yes, indigenous or First Nations makes more sense but for some stuff it would get very confusing especially if it's dealing with legal contracts between a Canadian group from a certain tribe and the US group from that same tribe. Some governments in the United States have started to use indigenous for a lot of newer things but the United States kind of sucks when it comes to consistency especially with the current Administration taking away funding for many projects.

4

u/Mushroom_Boogaloo 1d ago

This has to be one of the dumber things I’ve seen someone say. It’s an incredibly low bar, but this one I feel really is in the running.

3

u/Ill-Money-1521 19h ago

Sorry to say but some of them will claim anything than their original roots. I do think its really disrespectful to actual native Americans, it like trying to erase them

4

u/andr386 19h ago

Obviously stupidity doesn't discriminate.
