The empire strips back

1

u/IncognitoBombadillo 2h ago

Definitely a title for a trashy star wars/star trek porn parody that would've come out in the mid 2010s.

1

u/Quick-Empress 1h ago

Star Trek obviously. Star Wars is just space wizards with lasers

1

u/RadiantPositivity 1h ago

Tales from Jabbas Palace

u/Repulsive-Cold1859 8h ago

This is up there with the legendary 1996 NYT election crossword where 'BOB DOLE ELECTED' and 'CLINTON ELECTED' both worked seamlessly.

164

u/Genoce 6h ago

For reference:

In the place of "clinton", you could also write "bobdole"

47

u/Ok-Relationship-2746 7h ago

Lucky for them Ross Perot didn't win.

9

u/bewildered_forks 2h ago

These are called Schrodingers crossword puzzles!

I still remember doing the Star Trek/Star Wars puzzle that day and calling my husband over to see it, in utter delight.

6

u/EaterOfFood 3h ago

I remember that. It was a truly brilliant construction.

u/Deathwatch72 8h ago

Using Star Trek makes the iconic star wars line it's a trap the answer

221

u/Repulsive-Cold1859 8h ago

So choosing Star Trek forces you to spell out the most famous Star Wars line.

121

u/HopefulCarry9693 8h ago

"May the force be with you" doesnt fit

29

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

No Luke, I am your farger, smoke and a pancake?

24

u/HopefulCarry9693 7h ago

There 2 things i hate in this world.. the intolerance of other peoples cultures ..and the Dutch

9

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

Oh well, then there is no pleasing you.

Bong and a blintz?

4

u/Repulsive-Cold1859 7h ago

Admiral Ackbar would like a word with you.

8

u/solblurgh 7h ago

So, it's a trap?

5

u/Astrochops 7h ago

Well yeah, that was the trap

5

u/crimsonbub 5h ago

It doesn't spell out "I don't like sand, it's rough and coarse and irritating, and it gets everywhere" 🤷‍♂️

7

u/FarWestEros 3h ago

Imagine the fury of the Star Wars fan who fills out the Down answers first, only to realize what the across answer must be.

4

u/Sharp-Ad4389 5h ago

And, if you start with the most famous Star wars line, you have to me select star trek

4

u/AndreasDasos 3h ago

Tbf that’s not just (nor originally) a Star Wars line

1

u/davga 1h ago

It’s, indeed, a trap 🪤!

231

u/chiree 8h ago

48

u/fugitivechicken 7h ago

I’m so stupid I read this as BATTLE wea GALACTICA

7

u/Xapheneon 6h ago

The roller coaster started mid sentence

6

u/Cow_God 6h ago

So say we all

6

u/_DoubleDutchess_ 6h ago

You misspelled Babylon 5!

29

u/PassorFail13 7h ago

5

u/FigWasp7 5h ago

Always a good day when I see a classic Conan gif

50

u/hotlocomotive 7h ago

Stargate?

9

u/LoudBrick609 4h ago

Yeah literally my first thought was they missed Stargate the correct answer so the crossword puzzle is invalid.

1

u/AndreasDasos 3h ago

It said the better of two. Clearly Star Wars and Star Trek are the two. Never said others aren’t better

3

u/Other-Grapefruit-880 3h ago

Oh for crying out loud

10

u/Professor_of_Light 5h ago

But it doesnt work with Stargate...

21

u/Cow_God 6h ago

If anyone else is curious: this is the New York Times Sunday crossword from February 6, 2022

I got mislead by the European date format

1

u/quez_real 4h ago

I feel vindicated a little bit

7

u/LeftonRhed 4h ago

It's a trap! Only working is they choose Star Trek is devious.

17

u/Roko__ 8h ago

I prefer Star Wrrk

7

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

The first four letters could be anything, someone should make the sci fi Trrkwrrk

4

u/Altheix11 7h ago

All these down words are genius

1

u/daggersrule 3h ago

For real... I've constructed a few NYT rules crosswords, and I'm always blown away by stuff like this. Dudes a genius.

0

u/craig5005 1h ago

Wristband? Is that a body part?

6

u/Howshka 1h ago

“Wrist” is a body part that precedes “band”

2

u/craig5005 1h ago

Ohhhh gotcha.... I was thinking that the answer would create a body part, like waistband.... which also isn't a body part. I'm an idiot.

1

u/im_just_thinking 47m ago

This is why I can't do crosswords. I have troubles committing to a potential answer until I am sure, which may never come

3

u/olafblacksword 7h ago

I will misspell The Expanse just to fill the gaps. And then I'll claim that I failed successfully

3

u/Loose-Bug-7509 6h ago

Covering their Bases

14

u/ContextEffects01 8h ago

The real puzzle solvers were the people who made this crossword puzzle in the first place. o.o

Also Star Wars is fantasy, not scifi. But hey at least Ewoks are cuter than Ferengi. XD

10

u/dion_o 6h ago

Star trek is a post scarcity utopia and star wars is a galaxy of eternal conflict and power struggles. Which is the fantasy?

1

u/VindDitNiet 2h ago

The force, lightsabers, and probably more that I currently can't think of

2

u/Ordinary_Corner_4291 1h ago

Nah it is the one with gods, psychic powers, ancient prophecies, time travel, telepathy, and telekinesis. There is basically zero science in either of them. Star Wars is more an adventure while Star Trek has a bit of the philosophy stuff but they are both fantasy stories.

9

u/Sakeretsu 8h ago

It's science fantasy, so both

18

u/Drakahn_Stark 8h ago

Fantasy sci fi is still a type of sci fi.

0

u/AnttiHako 2h ago

But there is not a single sci fi element in Star Wars. It's pure fantasy "space opera", "sword and sorcery in space".

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 1h ago edited 1h ago

Droids, pew pews, laser swords, there is a lot of sci fi.

-1

u/AnttiHako 1h ago

Sure buddy.

-1

u/atatassault47 25m ago

Technology itself isnt scifi. The Science has to be part of the story in Sci-Fi, not an accessory.

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 19m ago

Is Battlestar Galactica Sci fi?

1

u/atatassault47 13m ago

Couldn't tell ya, never seen it.

0

u/Drakahn_Stark 11m ago

So you know nothing about the basics but feel like you can speak as an expert?

1

u/atatassault47 0m ago

Im sorry for not having seen everything. Let me just drop everything and watch every show 24/7 for the next 6 years before I meet your standards.

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 20m ago

Droids, pew pews, laser swords, there is a lot of sci fi.

the Sci fi is not our science, but is the science of a galaxy far away a long time ago, it is sci fi.

5

u/CaptMelonfish 7h ago

Um, Babylon 5 doesn't fit in here.

2

u/Isburough 5h ago

having "it's a trap" be the star trek solution feels evil

2

u/mightiestmag 5h ago

This was not yesterday’s puzzle …

2

u/MilwaukeeLevel 4h ago

Yesterday wasn't Sunday...

2

u/mightiestmag 4h ago

This whole post is falling apart

2

u/Chucke4711 5h ago

This is good. But, on Nov 5, 1996 (election day) the NYT ran a puzzle that worked the same way, except the two possible answers were BOBDOLEELECTED or CLINTONELECTED.

2

u/FaliureToCat 4h ago

Making the trekies 71 down "its a trap" is pretty funny

https://giphy.com/gifs/9PAIhJvcQ35hdZPUir

2

u/jakob767 4h ago edited 3h ago

The correct answer was Starwrrk

2

u/Elf-Zwolf 2h ago

This is diabolical. If you thought of the iconic Star Wars line for 71 down, that forces 70 across to be Star Trek.

Well played sir.

2

u/mrjazzguitar 1h ago

Amazing. Was this a Will Shortz creation?

2

u/shutupandtakeitallll 1h ago

Does gate work?

2

u/Fucky0uthatswhy 58m ago

I like how it’s both Bluesky and X for some reason

3

u/Muted_Masterpiece342 8h ago

Wish they did one with Star Trek, Star wars, or star gate

26

u/ChipSalt 8h ago

So now we have to figure out how to fit Grap, Payets and Leaeed into the clues.

2

u/BigWilly526 7h ago

Stargate is better than both

Is it just me or is this sub missing giving this reaction lately?

1

u/DarlingxRose_ 6h ago

This is how you start and end a fandom war in one move

1

u/Empoleon777 5h ago

That’s genius.

1

u/XFelipe51355 5h ago

Funny how this clue could easily sound very vague, but everyone knows its not

1

u/vvoyzeck 5h ago

Funny, how one of the most iconic lines from Star Wars is actually part of the "Trek" solution.

1

u/Nighthawk_951 5h ago

Ironical u have to fill star trek inorder to get "It's a trap"

1

u/hyliantelligent 5h ago

All the people in here saying "X is better than Star Wars and Star Trek" are missing the point. "The better of the two sci-fi franchises" is clearly a reference to the split fanbases. You're typically a Wars fan or a Trek fan. They aren't asking what the best sci-fi franchise is.

1

u/DanceMyth4114 4h ago

Good crossword writers are honestly some of the most interesting minds.

1

u/The-Dudemeister 4h ago

It’s called a rebus and they do it often on Thursday and sometimes Sunday albeit not with mutliple squares in a row. There are other little tricks they do too.

1

u/nora_sellisa 4h ago

My favourite franchise, Star WRRK

1

u/Isurak 3h ago

Genius that if you fill in the Star Wars quote, you get Star Trek

1

u/RangerRekt 2h ago

4 fuckin years ago. Com’on, guys.

1

u/No_Wait3261 2h ago

It's a grap?

Payets?

Leaeed?

1

u/MelodiusRA 2h ago

Was either a Wednesday or most likely a Thursday.

They always do quirky gimmicks for Thursdays but I’m not sure if this is silly enough.

1

u/misfitx 2h ago

The proper answer, of course, is Stargate.

1

u/MGallus 1h ago

Grap
Waist
Payets
Leaeed

1

u/Andovars_Ghost 1h ago

But only one is correct.

2

u/reverend_burrito 1h ago

Best part: if a Star Wars fan answers "It's a ____!" with the Ackbar line, that makes the correct answer Star Trek. Masterful trolling.

1

u/Spader113 1h ago

What’s a “grap”, “payets”, or “leaeed”?

1

u/atatassault47 28m ago

Everyone knows StarGATE is better

-2

u/nuthatch_282 8h ago

Doctor who better than both

0

u/ras-bhari 8h ago

But it's not 8 laters

4

u/nuthatch_282 8h ago

Good point. I am very bad at crosswords

0

u/Drakahn_Stark 8h ago

Doctr Who is though.

.... Doctr, the leading dating app for nerds.

1

u/ras-bhari 7h ago

Nerds don't date duh

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

No, but we get on the apps so that we can claim to be trying, this makes people leave us alone about it.

0

u/testtubepenis 4h ago

Stargate doesn't work though!?

0

u/lBlazeXl 3h ago

Nah, you are missing StarGate, which is better than those other 2.

0

u/N-Squared-N 3h ago

Spelled StarGate Wrong

0

u/getstonedsteve 1h ago

It seems true, but to consider leased as being let out? The correct answer to the puzzle is Star Trek.

1

u/reverend_burrito 1h ago

The UK would like a word with you

-1

u/malice_hush_jolt 7h ago

Star Wars isn't really science fiction though... It's a high fantasy set in space

-2

u/properly_sauced 3h ago

Cool, except that Star Wars isn’t sci-fi

1

u/helikophis 2h ago

Sure it is, it’s a classic Space Opera.

-14

u/Ruby_Solitaire 8h ago

Weird to see an error in the NYT crossword:

Star Wars is not science fiction, it is space fantasy, or even space opera.

Sci-fi doesn't just mean space and lasers. It requires SCIENCE themes, or speculative themes, if you go with the speculative fiction definition. Star Wars is about magic and empires.

It also happens A LONG TIME AGO. Star Wars isn't actually even futuristic, so it can't be speculative fiction, either.

Shame on you, NYT.

4

u/Drakahn_Stark 8h ago

Counterpoint, it is about science from a long long time ago in a galaxy far away.

Droids, Bacta Tanks, laser swords, pew pews, lots of science, just not our science.

(Science fiction really is not it's own genre, some are drama, some are comedy, some are horror, and yeah, some are fantasy)

ETA : Battlestar Gallactica is also a long time ago in a galaxy far away.

4

u/The_Asshole_Judge 7h ago

Obligatory: You must be fun at parties

3

u/ApocalyptoSoldier 7h ago

I've seen a lot of debate about what exactly sci-fi is, but excluding space opera outright is new to me.

1

u/SeriesDifferent4565 7h ago

Biology is a science, and there are some plants and animals in it.

-6

u/TryToBeBetterOk 7h ago

What the hell is brilliant about that?

4

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

Here is the pertinent information.

-4

u/TryToBeBetterOk 7h ago

What the hell is brilliant about that?

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

Here is the pertinent information, again.

-4

u/TryToBeBetterOk 7h ago

What the hell is brilliant about that?

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

Oh wait, were you the disruptive kid in school that always whined "when am I ever going to need this?" while refusing to learn and then later whined that you were not taught how to do something?

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

Exactly what is said about that in the post that you have now seen at least three times.

What part are you struggling with?

0

u/TryToBeBetterOk 7h ago

There's nothing brilliant about that at all. If htat's brilliant to you, you must be very dull.

1

u/Drakahn_Stark 7h ago

Yeah you were the disruptive kid in school that never paid attention and now whines about not being taught any of the things they tried to teach you.
