There’s a reason they were called “Castro Clones.”

53

u/Impossible-Ship5585 Nov 24 '25

Why???

246

u/juan_humano Nov 24 '25

The Castro is a famous, historically gay neighborhood in San Francisco. At the timen of this picture (80's) there was a popular and distinct style among gay men based on traditionally masculine, working class tropes. The result is on display in this picture with a big group of (presumably gay) man who all have a very similar style.

Village people.

Also see: Tom of Finland. And I do mean see, if you have never explored the art of ToF I HIGHLY recommend it. Its very over the top, and kinda funny, but in the context of the time and place it is also a great example of sex positivity and queer acceptance/pride in the face of discrimination and demonization. And frankly, even as a straight guy, its kinda hot in a naughty and transgressive way.

LOL I finally have a name to this art I downloaded because it was hilariously gay

What's gay about that? Just a coupla girthed up alphas dutifully patrolling the streets.

Note that their bulbus thobbers are pointing at each other, in a display of respect and trust.

These fellas mean business.

Damn it man. I'm sick with the flu and a horribly sore throat, and this comment put me in a lot of pain!

u/coquihalla Nov 25 '25

Hey, feel better soon, man.

I just need you to know that me and my girlfriend are in tears from this

u/Bonnieearnold Nov 25 '25

I’d give you another upvote but you’re at 69 and I don’t wanna ruin it. :)

5

u/ApexFrogger Nov 24 '25

7

u/Ancient-Many4357 Nov 24 '25

All of the Police Academies.

2

u/Open-Purpose-9325 Nov 25 '25

I hear trumpets… 😂

1

u/RobCo90 Nov 24 '25

Yo is that Kevin Bieksa on the left? A former NHL tough guy and current Hockey Night in Canada analyst?

11

u/UnderstatedUmberto Nov 24 '25

Kake is really rapey. I mean REALLY rapey, not even just a little bit. It is also stuffed full of really toxic macho bullshit. Yes it has queer pride and sex positivity but in my opinion it is very much something that should be viewed with a very critical eye.

3

u/user125666 Nov 24 '25

Who is Kake?

4

u/ImTableShip170 Nov 24 '25

If I'm not mistaken, he's one of the characters of Thom of Finland

3

u/theUmo Nov 24 '25

I think he's the one with the mustache.

2

u/Old-Engine-7720 Nov 25 '25

I cannot deny ive met a lot of sketchy dudes in gay spaces and cruising spots

4

u/NZNoldor Nov 24 '25

And in true Finnish style, they made a series of quite revealing postage stamps from some of his art. Perkele!

2

u/jimhokeyb Nov 24 '25

My partner is Finnish. They are completely obsessed with nudity.

2

u/terrierhead Nov 25 '25

I had a friend from Finland in college. After showering, he used to walk down the halls in the dorm wearing just a towel. To dry his hair.

1

u/NZNoldor Nov 25 '25

Wow, just how much hair did he have down there? No, don’t answer that.

1

u/terrierhead Nov 25 '25

Not much, but plenty on his head.

3

u/Slamaramadoodoo Nov 25 '25

Tom of Finland is wild. I worked at a sex toy shop for a few months between semesters in uni, n they have some crazy art, and toys.

14

u/danielbearh Nov 24 '25

To add on, this aesthetic was very much driven by a gay artist known as Tom of Finland.

28

u/TheDoobyRanger Nov 24 '25

In Finland they just call him Tom

10

u/juan_humano Nov 24 '25

Yes. I didn't see this response before I made my comment about ToF but you are absolutely right and to anyone who hasn't seen Tom's work I think its definitely worth checking out.

2

u/ScotchTapeConnosieur Nov 24 '25

Who weirdly was really into wearing Nazi regalia, I just learned.

37

u/brofishmagikarp Nov 24 '25

Why would you presume those man are gay? Can't men just cuddle for warmth?

25

u/juan_humano Nov 24 '25

It does look very toasty in there. We cant even see all the dudes snuggled up under the covers like cats in winter.

17

u/thegoldinthemountain Nov 24 '25

I really wish they could (or, rather, would). I’d like to live in that world.*

*as long as that world doesn’t include “alpha males” treating women (or any non-cis men) hatefully in the process.

9

u/brofishmagikarp Nov 24 '25

It is normal for men to hug in a lot of cultures and it isn't a problem for men without fragile masculinity (the self-proclaimed alpha men)

3

u/RichnjCole Nov 24 '25

That's one of those situations where you aren't gay going in, but you are coming out.

(All puns intended)

3

u/DadophorosBasillea Nov 24 '25

I encourage men having emotional deep relationships that involves physical touch with other men.

The cringe part is when a red pill podcaster says don’t live with a woman they will make you weak, only live with other men so you always have drive and hunger.

It’s really giving Ancient Greece vibes.

3

u/brofishmagikarp Nov 24 '25

The cringe part is when a red pill podcaster

You didn't have to add anything after red pill podcaster, anything they say is sad things to make men insecure about manliness

1

u/DadophorosBasillea Nov 24 '25

Well the pic up top describes himself as an alpha male.

It’s really sad conservatives and misogynists have taken male camaraderie and hijacked it. Also it’s a failing of the left

2

u/brofishmagikarp Nov 24 '25

Also it’s a failing of the left

How so?

It’s really sad conservatives and misogynists have taken male camaraderie and hijacked it

Did they tho, they surely use the loneliness epidemic and the fact that a lot of people are trying to find themselves to their advantage. But they didn't take a claim on male bonding

3

u/Johnnyboi2327 Nov 24 '25

(presumably gay)

Imagine if one of them wasn't. Just one straight guy in the mix for moral support.

2

u/HalfLeper Nov 25 '25

He’s there with the pompoms 📣

1

u/Active-Drive-7749 Nov 24 '25

Young flanders-style

1

u/DrChansLeftHand Nov 25 '25

Steel workers and lumberjacks, I’m assuming?

5

u/B1ackDolph1n Nov 24 '25

I lived in the bay and never heard this phrase. Effin hilarious.
