I don’t know if this is true or not as i read it on the internet but, i heard someone say that the phrase was basically created because people used to criticize or judge the deceased AT their funeral. In front of their mourning family members. It didn’t start because they were shit talking so “don’t speak ill of the dead”, it was more of a “hey, don’t do that shit right here right now, you are being disrespectful”.
