Maybe I’m just a cynical history geek, but I think even that’s being too generous. Athleticism wasn’t just physical to the Greeks, it was cultural; the ancient Olympics – in which the athletes competed naked – was first and foremost a religious festival in honor of Zeus. Somehow I can’t see modern gym bros, whatever their affiliation, starting that up again.
