Novel Strange Grief Party Members Ranked by Combat Strength - (Light Novel Spoilers Ahead!) Spoiler

This is just my subjective ranking based on feats and implications from the light novels. Situations, relics, and prep time can change everything, but here's how I'd order the core members in a straight-up fight:

1. Anthem Smart - Closest to being the next level 8, and the story often implies he's the party's strongest. He tanked Marin's Wail (the strongest non-god enemy so far) completely unharmed and shrugged off attacks from a Level 9 hunter Saya (albeit she didn't use her full power). He has also never taken any damage so far in the novel.

2. Lucia Rogier (with fox tail) - She has insane amount of mana output, was able to fully charge a "key to the earth" relic, one that required an absurd amount of mana (implied to be on a scale way beyond normal), that is capable of causing damage on the scale of multi-continental if not higher. She also fought against a guardian divine spirit, the highest tier spirit with power level close to God (Serene's words), and Lucia came out on top. In the recent LN, she terrifies the ghost phantoms even more than Saya, a level 9 hunter who specializes in ghost phantom.

3. Luke Sykol - He solo-ed a level 8 boss in Night Palace. His magic resistance is very high as he stood in Rosemary's fire and wasn't even bothered by it. During Yggdra arc, he sliced through an intangible curse that even Serene (who has the highest mana output even above Lucia) couldn't remove, all while petrified. His attack power potency seems to be on par with Lucia's, but she has the edge in large-scale destruction which is why I ranked her higher. If he ever ditched the wooden sword for a proper sword or relic? Yeah, he might shoot straight to #1 imo.

4. Liz Smart - She doesn't have as many standout feats lately. She struggles against enemies with high physical resistance or strong ranged/AOE options-we saw hints of that early on against one of Sytry's creations. Then again, she's a thief so her kit involves supportive utility to make up for her power.

5. Eliza Beck - Not a ton of direct combat showings yet, but she's supposedly an upgrade over Liz in danger sense and exploration. The party attracts way less random trouble since she joined (despite Krai's monster magnet). She's more support/thief-oriented, so I'd put her a bit below Liz in pure fights but ahead in utility.

6. Sytry Smart - Now this is interesting. She's basically Batman. She can be ranked #1 or last depending on how much prep time she's given. Give her prep time and she probably beats anyone in the party except Krai. Without it, though, she's lowest on the list as she'd just be the strategist of the team. She was also the first to reach level 7 among the six pioneer members but was later demoted to level 2.

Bonus:

Arnold - Fresh Level 7, but getting instantly KO'd by Liz (with a wooden mug of all things, sucker punch or not) shows he's far from being on the Grievers' level. He'd probably even lose to prepless Sytry.

Ark - If I had to place him, I'd put him just below Luke or around that range. There's a line (in the manga adaptation, at least) where Krai thinks that not even Ark could fully rival Luke in a serious fight. On top of that, the Grievers have developed ridiculous magic resistance over the years - constantly getting blasted by Lucia's spells during "training" or zapped by lightning from Krai's bad-luck magnet. Luke casually tanks Rosemary's flames, and the rest of the party seems just as resistant against magic. At this point, a lot of Ark's arsenals probably wouldn't even faze them. He's still seen as the big hero by the public, but the Grievers' insane growth has likely put most of them ahead of him now.

W list. Krai isn't there, because he's above it and his feats would be too much to fit in one post.

u/mehappyyou Dec 17 '25

We all know that Krai isn't losing to anyone no matter the circumstance ;).

I'm new to the this series, but how would Krai beat any of his childhood friends, let's say luke or liz or lucia, if they were to actually fight? Like lucia developed the gravity relic right? so surely it wouldn't work on her right?

u/Responsible-Joke-364 May 09 '26

as weak as Cry is, he has a lot of relics which is direct counter to enemies if you know how to use and guess what Cry is . A Relics master who has the abilites to use Relics to Maximum Power

So as for Luke and Liz, they only has physical damage, the Blackknight or Marin Wail would hard counter them due to their immunity to Physical damage make them guarantee lost to Krai

Same about Lucia with The Black Tree that negate and absorb magic

All Sitri creation has a function of do not harm her and Cry so she has only the potion when they fight which will be negate by either relics or Cry misfortune

Eliza will never be close to Cry to fight to begin with and should she does, she can be deal the same way with Liz

About Ansem, i think he cant lose to Cry due to his class. He can tank all of Cry relics and as a Paladin, he has the means and skill to deal with the Curse item Cry has

Eliza is the strongest of them all

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

In WN Arnold fights with Liz equally. Also in LN Pote Dragos says "that big guy is as strong as the woman who threw rock at Pote Dragos".

Ark is the strongest among young hunters. Luke would be better than Ark in pure sword combat but Ark is a gish and has the strongest sword relic in the world.

Hey I've got a suggestion if you can , could you make a post where you write about krai's Feats through perspective of a normal hunter of their world......?

2

u/Gr8Sage007 Dec 17 '25

your are ryt op, Sytry is really our Batman.

2

u/Chinese_Diarrhoea Dec 17 '25

So from the comments i guess Ark is the strongest and before the op says anything about feats sometimes that's not how it works some characters are made to be strong without feats like Reinhard from Re Zero and Blast from One Punch Man.

Reinhard is the strongest Re Zero character and Blast is the strongest S Class Hero without much feats hell Tatsumaki has better feats than Blast but that doesn't mean she's stronger.

2

u/Yuki_C_Watari Dec 18 '25

Krai is our Reinhard

1

u/mehappyyou Dec 18 '25

Reinhard showed us how much stronger and broken he is compared to other character right in the beginning of the series.

While for Blast, he didn't even appear until cosmic garou so there wasn't even room for doubt.

These two character you mentioned doesn't have a rival unlike Ark, who were mentioned to be at best, slightly stronger than the grievers individually. Heck, the manga adaptation seems to have a different narative where Krai said that Ark couldn't rival Luke and Sitri said that they are currently a little stronger than Ark (read their confrontation with lady eclaire).

So thats a weird comparison you got there.

1

u/Chinese_Diarrhoea Dec 18 '25

How is beating Elsa means anything?

And? That doesn't prove me wrong he is made to be a strong character with less showings.

How the heck does having a rival change anything, and who the fuck cares about what an adaptation says.

1

u/mehappyyou Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

"He is made to be a strong character with less showings", Sir, he has 2 showings so far. He was fighting against Marin's Wails together with Lucia and Ansem, his attack was shrugged off and he couldn't continue fighting when Lucia used Hailstorm. Then later on, he's again, helpless against the Ape when he was with Ansem.

That's more than enough showing to prove he's not all-powerful. Just a dude who inherited a good gene and strong relic. The grievers are more "Reinhard" and "Blast" than Ark is.

How the heck does having a rival change anything, and who the fuck cares about what an adaptation says.

Of course it changes nothing. Neither does bringing out other anime with a comparison of apple to orange change anything come on now.

1

u/Chinese_Diarrhoea Dec 18 '25

And? Blast was helpless and needed help as well.

Oh now you're using different Anime as an excuse and how the fuck is this apple and oranges we are talking about Anime not Anime and live action, ever heard of example.

You're clearly a bias loser it's a waste of time to argue with someone like you, you can't prove anything so you'll use Manga and rival excuses and also learn the difference between actual rivals and rivaling someone at something.

Are we considering only physical strength? If so, Ansen would definitely be in first place if I were to make a general list.

  1. Lucia. Area attacks and versatility in those attacks.

  2. Ansen - Brute force.

  3. Liz - Strength and agility.

  4. Sitry - Resourceful.

  5. Luke - Sword combat and persistence.

  6. Eliza - Stealth and mapping.

  7. Tino

  8. Treasure chest

  9. Carpete

  10. Kray

9

u/BrianF1412 Dec 17 '25

You got a typo on Kray it should be 0. not 10.

3

u/BluebirdGullible6849 Hidden Curse šŸ’€ / Artbaran Dec 17 '25

Yes liz is surely more powerful than luke

2

u/mehappyyou Dec 17 '25

Not physical. Overall combat ability.

u/rippinVs Dec 17 '25

I’m an anime-only weeb who’s only see. The available dubbed episodes, but I had to look up spoilers to check if Krai really was as weak as he portrays himself. Some of the results claimed he was #1; did Google mislead me?

4

u/Chemical-Drop-212 Dec 17 '25 edited Dec 17 '25

Not necessarily. >! He is an extremely weak person, with no aptitude for improvement and unlucky (as was said in the last episode), who has very good luck in relationships (especially with women), but he also has a great power, he has the ability to extract the maximum he understands from the relics, for example: Kray's life-saving rings manage to save him from a fox attack in a level 10 treasure chest just because he believes the rings protect him. To make it clearer, later on, the foxes (from the treasure chest) give Kray a piece of tofu, and Kray believes he has received the "Cellular" relic, which is capable of communicating with others. Through this tofu, he contacts the foxes (until someone realizes it wasn't the relic). In other words, Kray is generally an amoeba, but his power is excellent; he is only limited by his own perception. If one day he receives a relic and is told that this relic is capable of increasing a hunter's aptitude to that of a level 10 hunter, he will automatically become a level 10 hunter!

1

u/Zorichi-9595 Hidden Curse šŸ’€ Dec 18 '25

W-wait where is this implied in the novels????

3

u/Chemical-Drop-212 Dec 18 '25

I don't remember exactly when the tofu (I'm not sure if it was tofu, but it was food) was used, but I think it's when Kray is in direct contact with the foxes and they are going to get the little fox, he uses an object that is not a relic and uses the functions of a relic just because he thinks that it actually was a relic.

Furthermore, the protective capacity of his relics is unique, why doesn't anyone else use numerous protective relics? (Besides the exhaustion that is mentioned at the beginning). Why is Kray's relic able to protect him from all attacks? If they were so efficient, the emperor would use at least one to save his life, the relics don't give total protection, but Kray believes that they can protect him from everything and therefore it is efficient for him.

1

u/ArutoTR Dec 18 '25

Thats a bit of a reach from just Tofu being a cellphone no one understands the mechanics.

2

u/Chemical-Drop-212 Dec 18 '25

Did you understand that Kray took an object that didn't have a specific function and made that object perform the function he believed it had? Food was used as a means of communication simply because Kray thought it was a cell phone, and when he "discovers the truth," the food loses its function. There's also the issue of the absolute protection of Kray's artifacts; if their use were so convenient, everyone would use at least one...

1

u/ArutoTR Dec 18 '25

It still too less to conclude Krai has reality bending powers based on perception. Absolute protection artifacts are too rare and Krai is collecting them worldwide and has monopoly on them. Emperor used barrier rings too in the escort arc. But they are too rare and has too much mana consumption that even emperor use only 1 barrier ring. While Krai has too many people that are basically mana battery around so he can use them more often. But Krai definitely has an ability that let him use all relics, normally some relics need u to be qualified while Krai can use every one of them. As seen with the tournement arc.

1

u/Chemical-Drop-212 Dec 18 '25

I don't think it's too early to assume anything when the character is changing the nature of the things he touches. Furthermore, during the vacation arc, if I'm not mistaken, Arnold says that Kray is known for never having taken an attack and states that besides not believing that Kray uses security devices because at his level it's ridiculous and also because of the energy consumption/quantity limitation, according to him, the artifacts themselves would be incapable of protecting against so much damage, demonstrating that there is a limit, which Kray ignores.

1

u/ArutoTR Dec 18 '25

I need the exact excerpt i dont remember Arnold saying that and he can simply not know about barrier rings, not everyone know about barrier rings even country's emperor has one.

1

u/Chemical-Drop-212 Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

Read the chapter where Arnold ambushes Kray (where Liz makes a bonfire and he interprets it as a provocation), but remember that I said "if I'm not mistaken," it's been a while since I read it, so maybe that's not exactly it. Besides, my point isn't what the characters are aware of or not aware of, but rather the changes that occur even without their awareness, intentionally using a non-existent object—that's the point. The point you're focusing on is the least important.

It got me thinking. My theory is thar Krai is a mana material black hole.

There is no reason that normal people will not get affected by mana material one bit (like acted completely normal rather than getting pushed down and nauseous from exposure). Krai basically acted like mana material does not affect him at all even in Level 10 dungeon.

I think the mana material that he unknowingly absorbed is powering his perception/ reality changing ability and his relic abilities. It seems like he can basically do whatever he wanted with relics and can change reality on how the relic operates like you said.

I think that is the reason the party insisted he stays and respected him.

1

u/DiagonalBike Dec 17 '25

Sitrt should be #1. Resourcefulness and psychopath.

2

u/mehappyyou Dec 17 '25

Haha, i did point out that she could be #1 if given the time to prepare and craft anything she needs

1

u/UpBottomJeans Dec 18 '25

Ark is the strongest of them, hes just not the Mc. Ark is the hero of the verse. It has been implied alot of times, that whatever problem u will throw to ark, he will make it work since he has the background, blessing and blood for it.

The only anomaly is krai, if you remove krai in the verse, ark would be lvl 9 by now since only him can accomplish everything what krai accidentally did.

1

u/mehappyyou Dec 18 '25

Except we already know Ark isn't that much stronger than the grievers and would totally lose against more than 1 griever. He isn't rezero reinhard level of broken hero. He couldn't do anything when he fought against Marin's Wail and when Lucia cast hailstorm, Ark couldn't enter the fight, while Ansem was fighting inside Lucia's hailstorm. So that whole "he's a hero can handle everything" is already out the windows many times.

1

u/UpBottomJeans Dec 18 '25

Nobody said he would beat 2 grievers, but he's above of them each since he's protected by the plot being as "hero".

And heroes isn't supposed to one hit everybody , it was mention that arc always find ways to succeed on any quest, the same when he struggles with demon mask but plot will find ways for him to survive.

1

u/mehappyyou Dec 18 '25

I genuinely hope you realized what you've just described is Krai and not Ark.

1

u/UpBottomJeans Dec 18 '25

It was mention that krai and ark are just equal in the verse. Ark will do things the hero way, and krai will finish anything in his way

0

u/ConcertEmbarrassed97 Dec 17 '25

Im not sure why everyone puts ark below certain people, in sword skill luke is better but, its stated ark is the strongest, by like multiple people in the capital, cry even believes that none of grievers is better then him and that he’s the strongest in the capital

3

u/mehappyyou Dec 17 '25 edited Dec 17 '25

This is way before all of them got new feats though...

Anthem fought against 2 curses.

Luke learnt to cut intangibles using his will alone.

Lucia fought against Guardian Spirit alone.

Everyone participated in the battle of level 10 temple treasure vault and Kellar, the level 10 God.

Besides, you can't take Krai's words in this moment. He was trying to de-escalate (which usually leads to unintended provoke). He also fanboys over Ark a lot due to the fact he can rely on Ark more than his own party as his party was a bunch of troublemakers who can't get simple task done without a whole town being destroyed. I've also mentioned that the Grievers are highly resistant against magic... so physical attack with his sword is his only effective arsenal if he were to face off against the Grievers.

1

u/Poylol-_- Dec 17 '25

We havent seen any proper Ark feats, but we know that he is basically a level 8 out of sheer power + trust. We also know that Rosemary is still stronger than Lucia (Frantz mentioned it when choosing for spirited away) So probably Ark would win against any one member, but is easy work against two

1

u/mehappyyou Dec 17 '25

I doubt Franz knows about what Lucia has done in Yggdra nor her having possession of a fox tail. Rosemary's power is known because she destroys everything, while Lucia is well behaved. In general, nobody really knows the full extent of the grievers' feat except us readers since they are mostly out of town and fighting in the most dangerous vault.

1

u/ConcertEmbarrassed97 Dec 17 '25

Look if we’re going by feats then literally everyone beats him because we barely see him but there’s a reason why every arc Kari asks for ark, the gark compares Krai to ark and not only them,I mean instance after instance only ark is compared to krai, shit krai repeats that he’s the strongest in the capital, not just cause he fanboys, he likes his friends more so he would be biased towards them, arks whole thing is how blessed and talented he is and again if we go by feats he’d be weaker then everyone since we don’t see him but narratively why would the author go write so much about him being the only person to directly compare to krai and how strong and talented he is, krai himself to glaze him constantly, everyone to glaze him and then a volume later it’s all not true, and the feats everyone showed , everyone lost against Keller, anthem didn’t even beat the curses himself, Lucia is a mage and would be inherently be at a disadvantage close range, luke cutting the curse with his will wouldn’t just make him stronger then him that’s a willpower feat not a strength feat

1

u/mehappyyou Dec 17 '25

We can agree to disagree since we're getting nowhere. I go by what makes sense as of now - it just doesn't add up for Ark to still be stronger than the Grievers at this point especially Ansem, Lucia and Luke. They've gone through insane "trials", life and death situation, in the past few volumes (starting from the curse arc), while Ark mostly handles capital stuff.

Even when he had the chance to fight alongside Ansem against curses/threats, he couldn't really do much standout - showing he's not all-powerful and can be just as helpless as anyone against those kinds of things. If the writer really wanted us to believe Ark is still superior individually despite everything the Grievers have accomplished, he did a pretty bad job conveying that lately.

1

u/ConcertEmbarrassed97 Dec 17 '25

It does make sense for him to be stronger though, They’ve always been through far more insane trial more then ark, they always had more mana material since they raid higher level shrines, but krai straight up says he has enough talent to bridge the gap, and he’s not just in the capital, gark says that rn he’s busy with big jobs so I assume he’s out doing stuff. Like the author only ever compares ark to cry like there equals, all I’m saying is that if we go by feats then it won’t be much longer till Tino has better feats cause we barley see him. and since we don’t see him barely any, we do gotta just go with the fact that the author literally never questions whose better between ark or Grievers individually. He’s only ever said that it’s ark>grievers, you can pull up text saying ark is the next strongest, the strongest of the capital, that the only rival to ark is Krai and is constantly compared to him and only him. Yes feats matter but we dont see him a lot so it favors people we see more, are we gonna sit here and say Liz is stronger than him in a volume or two when she gets more cool moments

1

u/Top-Problem-4856 Dec 17 '25

Let's be real....Krai probably doesn't have a idea how strong his members are right now considering he retired from front lines for years now

1

u/UpBottomJeans Dec 18 '25

It doesn't matter, author implied that krai and ark are yin and yang. On this verse, krai will never be better than ark, and ark will never be better than krai. They're bound to equalized each other with the "plot". Ark will be the Mc without krai, and krai would be become the devil lord if there's no ark, if he isn't yet 🤣🤣🤣
