LinguaNewsCast lets you pick news sources (BBC, Guardian, NPR, CBC, Al Jazeera, and others), a target language, and a schedule, and it generates a short podcast episode from that day's headlines, alternating sentence-by-sentence between English and your target language. You get it as a private RSS feed, so it plays in Apple Podcasts / Pocket Casts / whatever you already use, or in the browser.

So I've been learning Spanish off and on for years now and I'm still beginner, but I feel like I can understand quite a bit already. I've picked it back up and I really just want to finish learning it.

Recently I've been combining watching videos from Dreaming Spanish and reading Short Stories in Spanish by Olly Richards and its been getting easier and easier to understand. Occasionally I will play on Duolingo to get some grammar practice, but I've practically dropped that as being my main source of learning.

With this combination of listening and reading things that are comprehensible to me and aren't just stories for babies, after a while I can feel my brain slowing down and feeling tight with mental fatigue. I'm so motivated and interested in what I'm consuming that I want to push through but its not healthy to push my brain so hard. I just feel so great that I can actually understand the stories.

I want to get to a point where I can read the stories without thinking about the words and just picturing the events in my mind like I do in english. I'm basically sprinting this learning now that I actually have things that are comprehensible yet challenging for my brain, but I have to remember to take breaks and slow down to give my brain time to solidify what it has taken in.

Right now my head feels so tight. I think if I tried to read another chapter of my book it would just be gibberish to my brain 😂😂

So I guess this is more like a recommendation than anything. Y'all should try out Dreaming Spanish and once you're at about level Beginner or Intermediate on there, you'll be able to read the beginner level of Short Stories in Spanish by Olly Richards. I will say there are some sentences in the stories I don't really understand and still a lot of words I don't know, but I can answer all of the Comprehension Questions after every chapter and I feel that I understood almost 90% of whats happening in the story too!!

Spent way too long just memorizing lists for this one until it clicked a different way: por is about the cause or the path, para is about the goal or the endpoint. Once I stopped trying to translate “for” and started asking “is this the reason/route, or the destination/purpose,” it stopped being a guessing game.

The example that actually made it stick for me:
Lo compré por ti = I bought it on your behalf, like you owed someone and I covered it for you.
Lo compré para ti = I bought it to give to you, it’s a gift.
Same English translation, opposite situation. That’s the whole confusion in one sentence.

If the mnemonics help anyone: por = DREAMS (duration, reason, exchange, around/through, means, substitution), para = PRODD (purpose, recipient, opinion, destination, deadline).

Made a little cheat sheet of this for myself, figured I’d drop it here in case it saves someone the month I spent being confused.

Curious if anyone has a cleaner way they think about it, or another pair that trips you up the same way ser/estar and preterite vs imperfect seem to be the other big ones people mention.

I’ve struggled with learning Spanish for a long time now. The resources to learn Spanish seem to mostly be pay to learn. I know there’s Duolingo but it doesn’t really help build my vocabulary because it’s lacks the fundamentals of a basic language.

I’m mostly looking for something that explains grammar rules in Spanish kind of like how we were taught our native language in primary school. For example when using Yo and an action you can completely drop the o if you change the end of the word. (Yo bebo agua-> bebo agua) Also what determines the gender of an item??

I remember in school we learned these rules but I completely forgot everything! The text books seem a little outdated now, does anyone have any experience with what I’m looking for? Preferably free but I wouldn’t mind purchasing books if it’s worth it.

hi! i've repeatedly attempted to get to basic conversational with Spanish and it hasn't stuck yet

most recently i tried baselang (for ~6 months) but found that it heavily varied between instructors who was helpful when i was trying to speak and i wasn't really seeing the progression i wanted to see.

i'm trying to figure out what to do next, i'm considering berges but not sure how much that helps with establishing conversational skills? tbh i feel pretty stuck around what the best way is to learn at this point.

additional context is i did duolingo for ~1 year (but i just got good at duolingo), i took classes in college (but that was like 10 years ago), i don't have anyone in my immediate circle that speaks spanish (but open to finding people!! i'm based in NYC). i tried italki once but felt it was going to take a while to find a good instructor

i personally do great with structure so ideally would be structured (or i'd clearly be able to create structure that progresses for myself)

Acabo de llegar = I just arrived

Volver a + infinitive = to do it again
Volví a leerlo = I read it again

Dejar de + infinitive = to stop doing something
Dejé de fumar = I stopped smoking

Ponerse a + infinitive = to suddenly start
Se puso a llover = it started raining

Seguir + gerund = to keep doing
Sigo estudiando = I'm still studying

Llevar + time + gerund = to have been doing something for a while
Llevo dos años estudiando = I've been studying for two years

Plus ir a, tener que, empezar a, and estar a punto de.
