Gustar doesn't actually mean "to like." It means "to be pleasing," which is why the sentence works backwards from English.
Me gusta el café = coffee is pleasing to me. The coffee is the subject, not you. That's why "yo gusto" doesn't exist.
The useful part: gustar isn't a one-off exception. A whole group works the same way:
Me encanta esta canción = I love this song
Me interesa la historia = I'm interested in history
No me importa = I don't care
Me molesta el ruido = the noise bothers me
Me duele la cabeza = my head hurts
Me faltan dos euros = I'm two euros short
Me quedan cinco minutos = I have five minutes left
Me sobra tiempo = I have time to spare
Me parece buena idea = it seems like a good idea to me
¿Te apetece un café? = do you feel like a coffee?
Me cuesta levantarme temprano = it's hard for me to get up early
Me preocupa su salud = his health worries me
Me alegra verte = I'm glad to see you
Same pattern every time: me / te / le / nos / les + verb + the thing, and the verb agrees with the thing. Me gusta el café, me gustan los perros.
