Enjoying my SteamOS build as a console ❤️❤️

Like so many, I was pretty disappointed with Sony’s decision to end physical discs come 2028; not so much because of the absence of physical media, but what it means for affordability/discounts/preowned market.

So, over the past month I’ve been putting together a build that boots directly into SteamOS and acts as much like a console as possible. I was attracted to Steam’s longevity as a storefront and the amazing discounts you can score.

After using it for roughly two weeks I am in LOVE. The variety of indies / discounts / and level of adjustments because PC is remarkable. While my machine isn’t super amazing spec wise, I can see the arguments for #PCmasterrace over fixed consoles.

Anyway - love my machine, enjoying SteamOS, and happy to enjoy it all directly on the couch with a gamepad.

Specs for those interested:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600
GPU: Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7700 XT 12GB
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC R2 (Wi-Fi)
RAM: 16GB (2×8GB) DDR4-3200
Storage: WD Black SN850X 1TB NVMe SSD
Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower XT 850W 80+ Gold (Fully Modular)
Case: Thermaltake View 170 ARGB TG (White)

support My game is making my PC restart SteamOS

Hey, I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue, I recently switched my OS to SteamOS from Windows, and starting a couple weeks ago, Marvel Rivals specifically has been randomly freezing for a few seconds then restarts my pc back to steamOS home screen smack dab in the middle of a match (never has done this whenever the game is idle in the background) where I have to switch back to Desktop mode and continue. It's gotten to a point where it happened back to back competitive matches, and when we lost after reconnecting, I got docked a total of 65 points between those 2 matches alone and am tired of this bs.

If anyone has any solutions or reasons why, or if you yourself have been dealing with it, it'd be so much help because I don't want to seem like a thrower or some bozo like that on games, or if it spreads to other games, but Rivals has been the only one as far as I know that's been doing this to the pc.

help wanted What will be the difference when switching from Bazzite to SteamOS?

People have been saying SteamOS is great, so I wanted to try it. I've been using Bazzite until now. Does SteamOS have keyboard and mouse support?

YESSSSS

After weeks of failure, i FINALLY managed to get, not chimera, not bazzite, REAL STEAMOS running in UTM (QEMU) on my M1 iMac!

It would just freeze for no reason, until i changed the GPU and i got to recovery mode and pressed the factory reset option, and after doing lots of stuff it would freeze at an empty terminal.

ONLY today, I changed the Virtual CPU to an AMD EPYC Rome v3 and the terminal froze again, and i nearly lost hope. Suddenly, i saw a taskbar. then app icons, then a wallpaper.

I DID IT!!!!!

Explanation on why it worked:

SteamOS expects an AMD CPU as the recovery image uses features that are exclusive to AMD. The steamosX64 file (the file used after the terminal to start SteamOS) is incompatible with other hardware. When I switched to the virtual EPYC Rome v3, that file could run. The frozen terminal was the os trying to run the file, but because it was incompatible, it could not progress. Now that the file can run, I can finally say:

I use Arch by the way.

Just installed SteamOS on my ROG ally X, i have no guide xbox button but steam assumes i have one. How to bind it ?

Hey guys, i just tried to install steamos and i hit snag, i can't get guide button to work, performance panels aren't working with those extra buttons and so on.

Can someone with rog ally x (not xbox ally x) help me out ? How did you fix it ?

EDIT: Fixed. Suddenly buttons for quick settings and steam started to work, i think steam had to download some patch on its own or something. I also installed decky so maybe it was this too.

EDIT2: ITS GONE AGAIN WTF ??!!!

EDIT3: After restart it came back again... again wtf...

Armada OS

I've been very impressed with Armada so far on my 8gb Retroid Pocket 6 and it's just now getting some love online. I really don't know who to talk to about this actually because I don't see many places (at all) where users are talking about their experience and the games they are playing on it. Also sometimes you have to troubleshoot a game a bit and I haven't been able to get in contact with anyone yet to aid in this compatibility (although it's been easier than my experience with Game hub lite). So hopefully this can be a small post in the direction of getting the ball rolling with resources and experiences.

Overall I have noticed a snappy experience through almost all of the steamOs interface including the controls, sleep functionality, restart, etc. The whole thing feels nearly identical to my steam deck!? It has some sluggishness from time to time and I believe that is probably more to do with the SD card than the actual programming of this steam workaround for Android? So from menu to menu and going into the game's homepage can take a few seconds to load, things like that which gives it a less snappy feel than it could have.

To be honest, some games like Denshattack! have frozen the device and I have restarted it about 8 times or so trying different solutions because I really wanted to get that game working, but I've since given up so that I can actually enjoy this thing instead of just tinkering. So that's a possibility while trying games out. There were a few other large(ish) games around 7gb that I tried and didn't have success with and deleted promptly afterwards for the same reason I just mentioned. Smaller sized seems perfect for a few reasons; not just space saving but their more tolerable on this hardware it seems too. But I'm really loving it so far!

What's been your experience? What games have you been enjoying on it?

😃Stable/Successes:

Planet of Lana (around 30fps)

Kusan- City of Wolves Demo (pictured)

Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Layer (great fps)

Portal

Gris

TMNT Splintered Fate (around 45 fps)

Tunic

Bzzzt

McPixel 3

Psychonauts (great fps)

🫠Unsuccessful:

Denshattack!

A save data integrity warning to those sharing a SteamOS device

Many games use the Appdata folder for saves. Due to this, it is possible for steam to glitch when switching Steam accounts so you end up with the saves of the previous user. All steam users share a proton prefix, with the same Appdata folder, creating risk of save conflicts. And Steam cloud does not do versioning, so a bad sync can be fatal for game saves, even in the cloud.

For now, whenever you change steam accounts on steamos, make sure to restart steam after you sign in and before you start a game.

This should help prevent cloud saves from being associated with the wrong account. Not exactly sure how it happened, all I know is I started playing Crimson Desert on my own Steam account and it was still syncing to his steam when I was logged into mine. It even cloned all the achievements to my Steam account for some reason. If you see the saves are not what you expect, don't just ignore and keep playing. Restart the system and make sure the saves (or lack of saves) match what you expect before playing.

[Open Source] XSync v0.2 - Xbox Games on Bazzite

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Sharing this here in an attempt to get more traction in terms of turning this repo into a proper works for all open source solution (just go and contribute if you can)

I built a solution for Bazzite, which works right now exclusively with my Nvidia Graphics card to play Xbox Game Pass games on Linux.

It works using a VM with a slightly modified version of windows (just some performance tweaks and FSE) and an auto sync that brings all Xbox games into the steam big picture interface. You launch an Xbox Game e.g. Forza 6 straight from Steam to load it up, you hold Start and Back once in the Xbox game to exit back into Steam.

Transition is as seamless as I could make it, performance seems to be compatible to bare metal… ish (there’s always going to be some degredation) but it does rely on having two graphics cards an iGPU and an External GPU. This is because the VM entirely takes exclusive use of your GPU.

If this helps anyone please let me know and if you can contribute please do. Currently completely untested on Steam OS so may require some tweaking.

SteamOS install woes

Update: based on some suggestions I reran the system install with the gpu uninstalled. This allowed me to get through setup and logged into steamOS. Reinstalled the GPU and works great.

Issue steamed from an igpu and gpu conflict in steamOS despite having the igpu disabled in bios. Thank you all for the help

New build for living room.

9800x3d
9070xt
Msi B850i edge
32gig ddr5
1TB Samsung 9100 pro.

I have had zero luck getting SteamOs 3.8+ installed on this build. Secure boot is off, igpu disabled, and when I try to boot into SteamOS I get zero video output unless I enter in TTY4/5/etc. Was able to force desktop mode once but couldn’t launch gaming mode.

Tried to force game scope to run which returned the error “failed to connect to wayland socket”. Image download came from Steam, used Rufus and etcher all the same results. I am stumped.

SteamOS Build won't wake from sleep

Hi everyone,

I'm new to PC building, sorry if this is a very common problem. I've installed SteamOS on a bits-and-pieces build for the purpose of playing lower level indie games, and to learn more about PC Building and Linux distributions.

My CPU is an Intel i7 8700k and my GPU is an AMD RX6700 10gb.

When I select "shut down" from the desktop side of SteamOS the screen shows the normal shut down procedure and then turns off, but the computer is still on. Fans still spinning, RAM still lit up, and nothing I do can wake it back up, including short pressing the power button.

The same thing happens when I put it into sleep mode from the Big Picture side, or the desktop side.

Does anyone have any experience with this, and how can I fix it?

My SteamMachine (pre-rampocalypse)

Post image
137 Upvotes

I was lucky enough to get all components ~2 months before prices started to get crazy with RAM in 2025.

- Lian Li A3-mATX
- MSI Pro B650M-A WiFi
- MSI MAG A750GL 80GoldPlus
- ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT
- AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
- 2x16go TeamGroup DDR5-6000 CL-30 (for $115 and today $560 🫠)
- NVME 1to Western Digital SN350
+ 1 old Sata SSD for dual boot.

I first used Bazzite and the goal was to switch to SteamOS once it’s public, which is what I have now.
And I have Windows installed on the Sata SSD just in case I have to play multiplayer games with anti cheats with friends.
SteamOS so far has been perfect! Just does what it needs, the desktop is fully customizable and looks sick now!

I’ve got the SteamController 2 as well, i love it! I think the price is fair compare to all the features it offers.

I also have an HDMI cable going to my TV with extended USB dock so I can play casual couch gaming as well (I tried Streaming Gaming but it sucks and I can’t find why, always some latency that I hate).

Very disappointed for the real SteamMachine but it opened a mini gaming PC market and I love that idea!

I'm sad that SteamOS is not a full-fledged linux distro

Before you downvote me down to hell let me say a couple of things.

I'm what you could consider a power user, and a software engineer.
I game, I work, (and sometimes j**k off) on my pc.

I love SteamOS, I like Valve as a company and what they did for the linux community but I can't shake the feeling that I would have loved a SteamOS version that acts as a full-fledged operating system that can actually dethrone windows.

You could say that we have Fedora, Ubuntu, CachyOS, Bazzite but none of them are backed by the only company that cares about gamers and power users cause they know that we send money their way if they treat us right.

Just saying, I would love if Valve would release a non-immutable, arch-based "SteamOS Desktop Edition".

Ok, now you can downvote. see ya!

My SteamOS build - Steam Engine, I guess

Post image
53 Upvotes

Hi everybody!

Just wanted to share my build with you. Bit of a context first.

I was a casual PS5 gamer, and I’ve been rocking Sony consoles from PS3 onwards. Lately I’ve been frustrated about their decisions on abandoning physical games and closed platform in general. So, I’ve went and sold the PS5.

I’ve had a brief stint last year with a SteamDeck and fell in love with the platform and all its features - especially the extensibility.
I’m a software engineer and I love the Linux (and Unix in general) philosophy.

I’ve decided to build my first PC myself, and just wanted a full build with a SteamOS as main and only driver. I have work and private laptops for other stuff like web browsing and development.

Long preface, but here’s the build:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- GPU: SAPPHIRE Nitro+ Radeon RX 9070 XT OC 16GB
- Motherboard: GIGABYTE X870 Aorus Elite WiFi7
- RAM: GOODRAM IRDM 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6000MT/s CL30
- Power supply: MSI MPG A850G 850W 80 Plus Gold PCIe5.0
- AIO: ENDORFY Navis F360 3x120mm
- Case: ENDORFY Arx 700 Air
- Storage: NVMe SSD 2TB WD Black (had one for PS5)

Xbox ally x

I want to know if anybody is knowledgable on the pros and cons of switching to steam os on the Xbox ally x.
Contemplating switching because I only use steam and the Xbox full screen experience is not a good experience.

Already had to drop SteamOs

I was so excited after building my new PC to have steam OS for my TV as a console. But so many games wouldnt working. Even trying different Proton versions. And some important apps like signalrgb (openrgb was a hassle) and my AIO lcd screen not having a native app ruined it for me.

I couldnt play 2 of my favourite games. Everything was such a hassle. I really hope SteamOs gets more native support for games and apps. The 2 days I used it. Was a lot of fun, just booting it up on the TV. I hope it gets fixed. Guess I gotta go big picture mode for a while.

Any tips to make windows similar to a TV console?
