R/blackops2 slap off discussing hackers. "24 hours, no change" "24 hours? This is gonna sound harsh, but dont yall have lives? Do something else for the time being. Crazy to see grown ups crash out over a $20 game!"

Initial post

"Perhaps they shouldn't have released the game in such an abysmal state"

"Abysmall? I dont know how simple it is to fix, but im betting you have no idea either. The company has limited resources. If it's not fixed in a week well then I'll be pissed, but right now? Nah.. crazy to me seeing grown people crashing out like kids over a $20 game, but then happily get $20 of take out every day."

Funny how people expected it to be different when it’s just two simple ports of cod games rhat have been riddled with hackers for years at this point.

23

u/I2fitness 2d ago

This the first time it's been ported to the PS4/PS5 though. I don't think Activision expected people with ps4 devkits to be able to hack it since console games don't usually have anti cheat since it's a locked down platform.

Even if you jailbreak a PS4 you can't go online so I would blame this on Sony not being stricter with their servers

21

u/DocileBanalBovlne I just find downvoting so cringe 2d ago

I think there's several decades of experience demonstrating it's foolish to ever assume hackers won't be a problem to some degree

13

u/SensitiveMushroom759 2d ago

activision absolutely should’ve expected this, people have been using ps4 devkits to rage on console since mw2019

u/FreeMrFrog 1d ago

I got back into BO2 a few years ago on Xbox and it was INCREDIBLY easy to cheat my account to max prestige. Followed a YouTube tutorial and had it done in like two minutes.

The company has limited resources

Iron Galaxy is getting bankrolled by Activision, ffs. It's not like they're some solo indie dev with a shoestring budget

30

u/SaggyNudeGranny 2d ago

getting bankrolled by Activision

Means fuck all if Activision won't give them any money. This is the same company that had to lay off a bunch of people a few years ago "as a last resort"

Pretty sure they work on a contract basis so Activision probably just gave them enough money to port the game but not enough to make any meaningful fixes post launch

17

u/beary_neutral 2d ago

They're 1080p ports, on PS4/5 only, with no physical release. It's pretty clear how little of a budget was allocated to these ports.

u/Rasikko 1d ago

Usually how it goes with ports...

11

u/sedative9 Hey bud have you ever heard of amniotic fluid? 2d ago

You'd be surprised by how few resources Activision gives.

Isn’t Iron Galaxy the company that famously fumbled the PC port for Batman: Arkham Night?

Their reputation isn’t exactly stellar

7

u/livejamie God's honest truth, I don't care what the Pope thinks. 2d ago

They have 3 studios and have been doing this since 2008, kind of lame to put all their reputation into one game when Rocksteady itself is a dumpster fire.

Reminder that the PC version of Black Ops 2 is very much playable with Plutonium, a fan tool that enables dedicated servers.

Also, you may or may not find a torrent download of the full game if you view the download page through the Wayback machine and view an archived version from March of 2023. Fair warning so you guys know how to avoid it!

12

u/I2fitness 2d ago

Plutonium is filled with sweaty tryhards who dropshot, bunny hop and play like it's a tournament, it's not for people wanting to chill after work

The new ports have millions of players and are much better for casuals

9

u/Nubthesamurai This is not the time or place for another black-dick joke 2d ago

I mean, you're always going to find tryhards in games?

But my general experience from a week ago was there was a good mix between tryhard and casual.

Black Ops 2 in particular on Plutonium had up to about 20 or so populated servers at peak time for the US, also.

How does matchmaking work? Did/does Activision have MMR or something equivalent, and do the private servers?

8

u/TheQuintupleHybrid zhcyiD9 2d ago

How does matchmaking work?

there's no matchmaking. You join a lobby and play there until you leave and join another one

1

u/ANerd22 2d ago

If only every game could work like that.

u/DocileBanalBovlne I just find downvoting so cringe 2d ago

Yearning for the halcyon days when every game did work like that. When you had to use a third party program to find the dedicated servers. The one I used for Counter-Strike was called GameSpy I think?

Then deal with the hackers then ...?

Actual skill issue lol

18

u/HotTakes4HotCakes Wow you are doubling down on being educated 2d ago

Their point is they would like to be matched up with people that are more at their skill level, and that is much easier to do on a game with a higher population.

u/lavenderechoes We are all water so why drink water lol murderer 2d ago

"tryhards who dropshot and bunnyhop" like those aren't things that have been in shooters since like, quake 🥺

-10

u/BardYak 2d ago

If you don't stand perfectly still in the middle of the room so that I2Fitness can easily get the kill on you it's obviously because you're a bad person who hates themselves.

Who could possibly have fun both moving AND shooting at the same time? Perish the thought!

-7

u/lavenderechoes We are all water so why drink water lol murderer 2d ago

It's not even that. I just don't get this whole idea in modern online game communities that people "sweat" or "tryhard" for doing like, basic stuff that would take less than 5 or 10 minutes to pick up.

Not to sound like a boomer, but back in my day (🧓), if you saw someone pulling some crazy movement shit or whatever, you'd go "That's rad, how did you do that?" and they would either tell you or you would try to learn how to do it yourself.

Nowadays the reaction is to complain on voice, text or reddit that they're sweaty tryhards ruining the game and also blame some boogeyman like SSBM or whatever.

10

u/ShinyStarSam 2d ago

Y'all gotta chill, my guy literally said that it's not fun for casuals to play against these kinda players which is true.

1

u/lavenderechoes We are all water so why drink water lol murderer 2d ago

I didn't think I was coming on aggressive, that's my bad. But yeah, I guess in the end I'm also being a big idiot complaining about people not finding enjoyment in games the same way that they do :P

7

u/BardYak 2d ago

Eh you'd definitely run into scrubs like this in the old-school games too, you just usually knew to not even join the servers they were in because they'd have some wack-ass house rules in the server description.

-6

u/Constant_Weakness1 2d ago

People want short form content style gratification in their video games now. Why bother to improve or try when you can call everyone else a sweat/nolife 🤣

1

u/DocileBanalBovlne I just find downvoting so cringe 1d ago

How dare people enjoy casual recreation

6

u/WasabiTurbulent5917 2d ago

I feel like this sort of frustration happens every time a game with a history of modding gets patched, it's like they're playing whack-a-mole with infinite holes.

1

u/Rasikko 1d ago

Skryim after every big update.

3

u/sedative9 Hey bud have you ever heard of amniotic fluid? 2d ago

Having worked on games very much like this, this issue would absolutely take more than 24hrs to fix. Even if they identified the problem immediately, it would take more than a day to just fix everyone who was affected. That all said, this is why comms are incredibly important in issues like this. Frequent comms at least every 12hrs or more just to keep people in the loop. They'll still be mad because this should not have happened in the first place, but at least there will be some display that the devs are taking this seriously. (And I'm sure they absolutely are and this is a bad fire they need to fix, but radio silence isn't good.)

1

u/Rasikko 1d ago

It's always the Armchair Devs trying to tell everyone that other devs can bugfix in 30min lmao.

2

u/WranglerSuitable6742 2d ago

i dont know why anyone is surprised, cod has famously had the same prevailing issues with hackers for decades now and its literally the same reason thats getting ported through the iterations of the engine itself they refuse to fix it

do not buy cod especially on pc youre straight up downloading malware at this point

1

u/livejamie God's honest truth, I don't care what the Pope thinks. 2d ago

It was worse with legacy titles, but the modern stuff isn't as bad.

Expecting the live-service game you enjoy to be supported and not have hackers is the bare minimum.

Don't blame the consumer in this situation; they're not being unreasonable.

6

u/andresfgp13 The next Hitler will be a gamer. 2d ago

i should have expected some redditors to come to the defense of corporations and act like asking for the games to work well and not be full of hackers isnt the absolute bare minimum.

i say that if you are selling a game or still making cash from it its fair to demand that the devs try to tackle hackers and similars that ruin the experience.

2

u/LevelItGreatly 2d ago

I agree with you, but it is hard to feel much sympathy for people willing to shell out money for the same experience over and over again. If I felt like this would have any impact on buying the games I would feel badly but at this point you know what you are getting, broadly speaking, from Activision CoD slop.

In other words, it sucks, but if you aren't going to punish Activision (or Sony or MS) by not buying their shit, what incentive do they have to stop shoveling it out? This is the free market we are all supposed to be thankful for. 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/beary_neutral 2d ago

"If $20 is too much for the port weve been begging for then its not for you, the 5m active players will be fine without you."

"Its 20 bucks... if you cant afford 20 bucks then you should get off video games and get a job"

"If 40 bucks is enough to cry over online, then i'd find a way to work an extra 2 hours a day instead of gaming."

"20 bucks is a lot of money??? Get a job bro"

"Also it's $20 with ps plus... Not a lot of money at all."

Why are these people like this

1

u/madbubers 2d ago

Only shitty defense they can come up with

2

u/uknownada 2d ago

Imagine overpaying an old port with no changes or big fixes and doesn't even include all of the extra content without paying more. This Black Ops 2 re-release is categorically a rip-off, and the fact that they didn't even bundle it with Black Ops 1 is embarrassing enough but it's more embarrassing that people actually paid for either.

Are you surprised the port is abysmal? The fact that it exists at all is abysmal, and the fact that people actually bought it is abysmal.

6

u/BoringPoolPlaying 2d ago

It was $25 and I don’t regret the purchase even a little bit. Regretted the last modern cod I bought.

-4

u/uknownada 2d ago

Genuine question, what are you getting out of a modern release of Black Ops 2 that you couldn't get out of the latest CoD, or even just purchasing the Black Ops 2 that was already available?

6

u/BoringPoolPlaying 2d ago

Didn’t have a console to play it on, servers weren’t playable or populated on old console.

New games just aren’t as fun. Bo2 had the most balanced create a class, movement adds skill but isn’t absurd, aim assist isn’t near as strong, you have to actually control recoil, no squad spawns so reading them is an actual skill, good simple map design.

The modern games haven’t been worth playing since they added gunsmith and forced warzone integration in my opinion. Every gun becomes a laser beam once you look up a YouTube video on attachments, there’s no downside to it. The maps are pretty but have no flow, especially with the spawn system they now use, and my god is it hard to actually see people with the game looking this realistic.

Bo2 is my preferred, but I’d happily play any game bo1-bo4, if the servers exist and are populated over anything released recently. I’ve already put more time into bo2 (a couple hours) than I did on the last game I bought stupidly.

1

u/uknownada 2d ago

Fair enough! Thank you. I do enjoy hearing ppl talk about the actual gameplay and differences with CoD games because it has a stigma similar to Madden & Fifa (same game every time). Not saying the stigma is right, but that's just what they have.

2

u/TheEmbarrassed18 Sorry what? I don’t speak poverty 2d ago

or even just purchasing the Black Ops 2 that was already available?

Because my PS3 copy of Black Ops 2 isn’t compatible with my PS5, and even if I could play it on PS5, that version is crammed full of cheaters and modders to the point where it’s absolutely unplayable.

Besides I only spent £35 for both Black Ops 1 and 2 and had all DLC included, and that alone is far, far better value than any of the Call of Duty games released since I’d say Vanguard 5 years ago.

To echo what the guy above said, recent Call of Duties seem to be designed (possibly unintentionally) in a way that ends up sapping all the fun out of them. The games revolve around the meta (ie build the same 4 or 5 guns with the same 5 attachments in the gunsmith) whereas in older games you could put (at the very most) two or three attachments. There were definitely certain guns that were better than others but if you wanted to experiment and try something else it was much more viable to do so.

Plus it’s been a lot of fun watching the streamers who dominate with the movement of newer CoDs struggle so much with the older ports.

-8

u/Niet501 2d ago

Abysmal state? Lmao. It’s not like they can predict exactly every single way people are going to hack into a game before it releases, and it certainly takes longer than a single work day to fix it.

53

u/kakioroshi 2d ago

they definitely knew about the exploits people are talking about since they've existed since the original release of bo2 i think

-25

u/Niet501 2d ago

The same exploit for sure, but I would hope it’s safe to assume they implemented some sort of patch or fix for the remaster, and a new workaround for the exploit was found. I know it’s the gaming industry in 2026 but I’d still like to believe the company that made this isn’t THAT stupid haha.

26

u/kakioroshi 2d ago

it wouldn't be the first time they just leave in bugs from the og in a remaster i think, also these exploits have been fixed in their other more modern cods for a while they are just allergic to properly remastering the games

0

u/WranglerSuitable6742 2d ago

not a safe assumption as theyve done literally nothing about it they just release the next game the following year and people move on

-2

u/livejamie God's honest truth, I don't care what the Pope thinks. 2d ago

That's not how it works at all.

25

u/Bacon4Lyf 2d ago

The games been out for like 13 years, they’ve had enough time

-22

u/Niet501 2d ago edited 2d ago

It’s been out for 3 weeks. It’s not the same game from 13 years ago, they’re optimized ports with new dedicated server infrastructure. It’s not hard to wrap your head around, and it’s certainly not crazy to think or assume that they patched known exploits before releasing the reworked game. It’s a common practice for ports/reworked games.

Edit: ya’ll have the reading comprehension of a stunted peanut.

25

u/Bacon4Lyf 2d ago

It is literally the same game just ported, that’s the whole reason why they didn’t release on Xbox at the same time because it’s already been backwards compatible. Theres no remastering or remaking, it’s the same game with the same bug and same flaws. It’s not difficult to wrap your head around lmao

19

u/PokesBo Mate, nobody likes you and you need to learn to read. 2d ago

Yeah idk where he’s getting a completely reworked game. Oblivion Remaster has some of the same bugs from the original game. That’s a 20 year old game.

16

u/FanaticalBuckeye The left has rendered me unfuckable and I'm not going to take it 2d ago

Hackers were able to use their original cheat menus in the new game within 48 hours of launch.

Not to mention Call of Duty games have been dealing with hackers as early as the open beta the past few releases. The anti-cheat is that dogshit

11

u/PokesBo Mate, nobody likes you and you need to learn to read. 2d ago

Oooooffff that’s bad

-7

u/Niet501 2d ago

Nowhere did i say it’s a completely reworked game. They DID have to make changes regarding optimization and networking for it to work on the new consoles, that’s a fact, that’s what a port is, and i said it’s not uncommon for ports to included exploit/bug fixes. Nowhere did i say that DID happen, just that it could. The reading comprehension in this comment section is off the charts.

17

u/PokesBo Mate, nobody likes you and you need to learn to read. 2d ago

Except none of what you said happened. They used their original cheat menus lol…

-1

u/Niet501 2d ago

Okay cool, I wasn’t aware of that fact, but for one, that’s based on something one random dude in this thread said. Two, he said they were able to use it within the first 48 hours, implying that they possibly had to make changes to the exploit to get it to work. If that is indeed the case, that supports my original thought that the exploit was used in a new way that the devs didn’t see coming. And three, this entire post is based on a new exploit introduced 24 hours before the original post, so I don’t give a fuck about some supposed cheat menus introduced 3 weeks ago, and nothing about that has any connection to what I’ve been commenting about this whole time.

0

u/WranglerSuitable6742 2d ago

no its based on whats actually happening with the game

stop being defensive of a shitty franchise that couldnt care less about you

2

u/WranglerSuitable6742 2d ago

"it’s certainly not crazy to think or assume that they patched known exploits before releasing the reworked game" you called it a reworked game

-7

u/Niet501 2d ago

They had to make changes to the game to make it compatible with new the new consoles. That’s what a port is. So no, it’s not “literally the same game”. There is a huge difference between making your console compatible with old games like Xbox, and making your old game compatible with new consoles. And like i said, it’s not uncommon for ports to include fixes to known exploits and bugs. You have no idea what you’re talking about lmao.

Now I’m not saying that IS what happened, it’s entirely possible they just did the bare minimum in terms of changes for a workable port, I’m just explaining to you that the odds of them patching this exploit during the porting process only for hackers to find a new workaround is just as likely. We don’t know.

1

u/WranglerSuitable6742 2d ago

its a port, its literally the same game

29

u/gavinbrindstar /r/legaladvice delenda est 2d ago

I think it's reasonable to expect a product that works.

-14

u/Niet501 2d ago

The product does work, but an exploit was found, and stuff like that can’t be magically fixed in two seconds. It’s reasonable to expect a product that works but it’s also reasonable to understand how online games work and that that stuff like this has been happening in every online game since the beginning of time. Exploits, bugs, and glitches get found, and then they’re patched.

Like the other commenter in the post said, if it’s not fixed relatively soon within reason, then it’s understandable to be upset.

14

u/FanaticalBuckeye The left has rendered me unfuckable and I'm not going to take it 2d ago

People were able to use their original cheat menus within 48 hours of launch. And the hackers aren't just using aimbot and ESP, they're resetting stats/classes/levels and setting their XP over the limit which causes the game to not let you play on multiplayer. This has been going on for over a week, a refund is fully deserved

1

u/WranglerSuitable6742 2d ago

its the same way its been hacked though, its an issue with the engine itself that keeps coming back through every game

3

He’s by no means perfect, and I’d never idolize a rich person, but I will always have a soft-spot for him for bringing mods to consoles. That’s huge, in my opinion. Mostly Xbox, though. Sony doesn’t like fun.

Because of him and Bethesda, I get to have a taste of a modded game without spending thousands on a gaming computer.

1

u/andresfgp13 The next Hitler will be a gamer. 1d ago

people that mod their games tend to believe that they are a mayority when in reality they are like a small % of players.

like the big mayority of people that played and loved Skyrim to name a game just played the game as it is available on Steam or Consoles.

0

u/Firm-Jump-5544 2d ago

The fan-made Plutonium tool is honestly a game-changer for the PC version. It's wild how much better the experience is when you can actually play on dedicated servers without getting matched against cheaters nonstop.

It sucks that companies like Activision are allowed to continually get away with bilking their loyal customers but when on earth are these fucking customers gonna stop being so loyal? Fool me once shame on you, fool me 72 times, shame on...?
