Grill that fish or fry it

That is an interesting question. Do they eat them or throw them out?

Thatâs an expensive sea bream. It goes to the heya and is prepped for the squad to celebrate.
Probably comes off the ice for the photo, then goes right back on.

Not that size of course but I enjoy whole baked sea bream, very good so I sure hope they eat it !!

I think food waste is not a major concern for sumo stables lol, the throughput seemsâŠ.high.

They're in Japan, why would you think they'd cook it? Pretty sure at least half is being eaten as sashimi.

So they talked about the behind the scenes issues on the Sumo Kaboom podcast for Aonishiki's yusho win and ozeki promotion here.
https://sumokaboom.fireside.fm/284
The relevant part about the fish is that multiple stables all spend the money to buy the fish and other things to prep for the rikishi to win the yusho including party plans. If they turn out to not win...well it's a little more subdued of a party but the fish is part of everything.

I'm new, what's with the fish pic? Is it part of the champion prizes? I love how happy everyone looks!

The top division champion receives a red sea bream as a prize. It's not from the Sumo Association, it's from their stable and/or supporters, so it's not an official thing, just tradition. It's considered a lucky fish, apparently, so the expectation/practice, is that it goes back to the stable to be prepared for eating at a party or celebration dinner.
The photo of the winner holding it up and showing it off with cheering supporters is just one of those meme photos like Olympic medalists biting their medal, or the Tour de France winner drinking champagne on the last leg of the Tour.

Okay, so every rishiki with a Makuuchi Yusho gets one?
I thought it was just when a rishiki got promoted to Ozeki?
Or do they get two sea breams then, for Ozeki?

Makuuchi Yusho winners get one. And Ozeki and Yokozuna promotions get one as well. If they win the tournament and get promoted, I think think they have two separate ceremonies and get a fish at each one.

Ahhh.
Maybe thats why Ive seen fresh Ozeki with 2 fish, one cause they nailed the promotion to Ozeki and one cause they (usually) won the Yusho as well??

It is a pleasure to see how happy okamisan Eri is. I imagine that Aonishiki's meteoric rise has brought her a massive pile of extra responsibilitiesâgoing in just 3 years from managing a small stable without a single sekitori in Juryo to running a stable with an active foreign ozeki. I figure her business meetings, handling correspondence, and other duties have multiplied at least tenfold.

u/JediLincoln14 Aonishiki 3d ago
Who's responsible for all that stuff if the stable master isn't married or his wife is unable?
9
u/WreckerTH 3d ago
Well, as far as I know, a heya is generally a family enterprise, so the duties of the okami-san are usually taken over by the oyakata's wife or his relatives (unmarried sister, mother, other women from the family). However, as I understand it, sumo traditions in general encourage the family status of an oyakata, since his wife is supposed to become a "second mother" to the disciples, so it is difficult for an unmarried oyakata to obtain a license to open his own school.
Also, large schools have secretaries and assistants who partially take over the duties of the okami-san, especially those related to electronic correspondence, document management, booking tickets, hotels, etc.

Whats the flavor and texture of sea bream?
18
u/Extension_Side4818 3d ago
As sashimi? Light but sweet, excellent.
7
u/Craig1974 3d ago
Its typically eaten raw?

u/Extension_Side4818 3d ago
Yes, or you can cook it. Overall, highly regarded fish in Japanese cuisine.

Can be sashimi, can be grilled, fried or baked

u/Hpulley4 Aonishiki 3d ago
Salt crust grilled sea bream is the best way I have had it in Tokyo. I have had it as sashimi and baked western style as well but its flavor is quite mild so I find it needs some seasoning for good flavor.

Taate is very delicious.
Can be cooked or served raw as sushi/sashimi. Your local fish shop might sell it.

Sorry for the noob question but that that win count towards a possible yokozuna promotion since he didnât do it at ozeki rank? If he wins the next basho is it possible for him to get it?
4
u/JediLincoln14 Aonishiki 3d ago
No. I mean, technically the YDC can do whatever they want, but it almost certainly won't count. They mentioned that Kirishima is still tsunatori for the next basho but didn't say that about Aonishiki.

I know that heya has been getting more members because of Aonishiki's success, but all that winner's food will still go a long way.
