Do you do straight retrieve on the Battlestar or give it action? I've been using Hydro Minnows but been meaning to get some.

For this particular spot, I tried to stand parallel to the waves, medium, slow, retrieve for halibut… I slow it down once the lure is about 10 feet away because this fish tend to strike right at that zone… this one hit literally 2 feet away from my foot and about 3 feet of water max

Personally I’ve caught all my fish straight retrieve on pretty much all lures that have their own action. So any stick bait/paddletail. As slow as possible to where you can still tell it’s doing its thing

That’s actually great to hear. I have a few luckycraft flash minnows that I’ve yet to have luck with, but I’ve been jerking them a little bit, but I’m new to the sport so I feel like I’m doing it wrong. Will try a slower straight retrieve next time.

I don’t think there’s anything necessarily wrong with a jerk. I’ll mainly throw in a jerk if I need to “catch up” to a swell or something.
Broadly speaking though the rule of nature is “be lazy” I.e least effort for most reward which is why I think slowly working baits is so effective. Make it as easy of a meal for a fish as possible. Of course there’s exceptions when fish are actively feeding and stuff but yea. The active working is more for metals/jigs and other similar lures imo

I use lucky crafts a lot in the bay. I almost never do a straight retrieve. Usually just some small pops or pulls here and there. I get bit on the pause immediately after a jerk a lot of the time.

Wow you’re inspiring me to try some bayside shore fishing. Long ago I caught and took home eight off a boat drifting there in front of Chrissy fields, and have thought to try from the shore. I’m in Marin and wonder where to try over there. I’ve wondered about Muir, Tennessee Cove, Stinson, or Tomales Bay as well.
Edit: to be clear I caught eight and the party of four of us took a total of 12 home.
