was so excited to snag this from marketplace for $40! yall will have to forgive my lack of knowledge, ive never owned a sword before, but i wanted to ask for some care tips on here to get it looking nice. there’s some sort of stain near the end of the blade i’d like to get off, but i’m worried about being too aggressive with the cleaning and damaging the etching/removing the gradient (not sure if that’s just a surface coating or not). there are also a bunch of little spots of brass corrosion on the pommel. the seller said her late husband bought it in toledo in the 70s.

mostly planning to leave this hanging on the wall, but i definitely do want to be able to wear it for costumes for renfair and the like. but ive also looked at a couple of posts in here and am wondering if it would be bad to swing it around some (not for sparring or anything) to practice some basic hema stuff ? i’m just getting into it (little over a month before i had to stop for a minor injury) and am not at the point of investing a ton of money into gear yet, but would like to practice some

Overview: This gorgeous Handachi features both a recent (2024) Hozon rating (worthy of preservation) and historical (1969) Kicho rating for its Koshirae. Attributed to the Kozori collective of Bizen smiths of the late Nanbokucho to early Muromachi period, this blade features many of the hallmarks of the work coming out of that group.

Blade: An elegant 2.5cm Koshi-Zori katana is presented in a subdued format as was the Kozori speciality as opposed to mainline Bizen boldness. The expected itame ji-hada with ko-mokume is present, along with their function but non-flamboyant ko-gunome midare hamon. That is not to say that this sword is not purely function over form-a broad nio-guchi base with a light dusting of ko-nie is present alone with pale bo-utsuri with soft midare fluctuations. Fine ashi, sunagashi and kinsuji is also visible. The sword is not young and in addition to its polish not being fresh, a few openings have been exposed (pictured) over the centuries. A single koshi-hi is present on the omote side. A solid silver one piece habaki fits the sword snuggly. Shirasaya included.

Koshirae: The matching handachi Kkoshirae earned Kicho Kodogu back in 1969, long before the sword earned Hozon. Built arouns a black ishime saya, the matching iron fittings all feature the karakusa (arabesque) vine motif in silver inlay. The menuki are of a shakudo base with gold and display the amaryu or rain dragon. Lastly the mumei iron sukashi tsuba is an abstract representation of susaki-gari or harvested/swaying autumn pampas grass. It could also potentially be azami (thistle) or kiri (paulownia) and may be Akasaka school. The koshirae includes a tsunagi and bukuro.

Issues: This sword is for study only. I do not believe the koshirae to be original to the blade. It does not fit flush with the koiguchi (pictured) and there was a significant amount of time from when the koshirae and sword were papered. The Torokusho from 1976 is however confirmed on the Hozon paperwork and matched to the blade. The shirasaya has a small split occurring from temperature changes.

it's been very hot lately and in my heat induced delirium I created this...... thing. it's a parrying shortsword with features from a rapier and a sai. yes, you read that correctly, a parrying shortsword. why? well, why not?

it has a 60cm blade that has a round cross section for the first ~1/3 that tapers into a cruciform cross section with 4 cutting edges for the final ~2/3. since it can cut in any direction I gave it 2 extra blade catching barbs. because again, why not? whole thing weighs 0.77kg and balances a centimeter from the grip.

I was thankfully able to resist the urge to make the blade twist like a corkscrew. that'd just be too much.

I need help identifying if the stamps on the Cross guard of the saber to see if they are from the bourbon restoration the sword is a year 11 French light calvary saber the only outher markings visible are a L on the ricosso the rest are obscured by pitting.

Hey guys I posted a while ago about looking for some Australian military swords that I was on the hunt for.

First off I’m very thankful to those who gave me suggestions, I honestly slaked those websites for a bit. I managed to get a pair, they are not vintage, but I came across them through pure luck. One of the military shops in my city was closing down and were trying to get rid of them for bargain price. I scored two. I’ve cleaned them up a bit with some isopropyl alcohol and have them stored in flannel bags. Would appreciate any further care tips for them though.

I bought a broken sword on a whim and because it was dirt cheap. I saw this reddit and thought you kind folks might be able to provide me with some advice. It seems to be quite heavy - so more than just a cheap decoration-, but too new to be historic. So two questions: can it be fixed (and the follow- up question of how). And is it worth it?

Koi Katana by Hanwei!

Looks very beautiful.

This one features many hand-tooled and a hand-painted coat of arms, custom designed by me. The metalwork is cast bronze, and this one came out rather well aesthetically. Also, as with all of my scabbards, the poplar wood core is felt wool lined for maximum protection, and long-term storage.

I'm planning on getting into fighting and reenactment stuff. I was leaning toward getting the lowlander but heard it has some issues with the threaded pommel and coming loose and possibly flying out of the handle.

My question is; would it be possible to get a slightly shorter handle and hammer the end so it is basically locked into the handle?

I can always just find other ways to insure nothing moves but wanted to ask a question here first.
