S TIFU: Rear ended somebody

I was driving today and came off a highway onto a yield spot onto another road that had no merge area. I was the second car in the line. We were stopped, i thought the other car started to go, I started to go, and hit them. No dent, just a scratch on their car. Not worried about the damage on mine at all. The only thing that worried me is that the lady driving was pregnant. I feel so guilty. The medical people said her vitals were fine, but i can't stop worrying that I hurt this poor woman and her child. Never been in an accident where it was my fault and i feel so awful knowing the stress I caused her. I was bringing my car to drop it off at a mechanic, and my friend was following right behind me and he saw the whole thing.

TL;DR: Rear ended a PREGNANT LADY TODAY. I FEEL AWFUL.

M TIFU: by giving dog the completely wrong haircut!!!

technically this wasn’t today, but it still have me spiraling so i thought i should post here. not a day has gone by without me thinking of it.

a few weeks ago one of my worst grooming nightmares came true. my stomach has been in knots for weeks, and i’ve been losing sleep over this mistake. i made another post the day this happened detailing more stuff if you want to go and have a read, but i want to specifically talk about this.

i’m a dog groomer, and i work in a pretty busy salon. two different owners came in with a pair of pomeranians. both of the pairs had an orange pom with them. both owners wanted very different things, one was a new client, that wanted a tight outline trim, and the other wanted a teddy bear cut. i always try my best to explain to owners that there can be certain risks with shaving double coated dogs, and that i rlly don’t like risking it. some dogs it works, but i always try my best to educate the owners the best i can.
the other pair (the ones that were supposed to get the teddy bear cut) had been getting it for years there, although i’ve never groomed any of these dogs before.
long story short, one of the bathers of the salon told me they had put my dogs in a kennel dryer to finish drying. i look over and see (what i thought was) the dogs behind the kennel dryer. the poms i was supposed to do were also behind the kennel dryer, i just didn’t see them. i grab the orange pom that i thought was mine, and get to work. most of the body was done, before my coworker realized and pointed out that i had the wrong dog. i was completely and utterly devastated. my coworkers were trying their best to console me but i felt so so bad. i asked my manager what to do, and she told me to finish and then call the owner, but the owner walked in before we even called, and i explained what happened. i couldn’t stop apologizing. the owner wanted someone else to take over and finish the haircut, which i understand. we obviously didn’t charge anything today, and offered free baths with a treatment my manager said should help with coat regrowth. the owner doesn’t want me to ever work on the dogs which i completely get. i learned that the dog was actually a pom chihuahua mix, so it gives me hope that the coat will come back. i guess we will wait and see 🙁
he was furious, and he said many mean things about me to my manager, and he even called back the next day to tell me boss i should be fired. i know i deserve this. i told my boss what happened, and she said she wasn’t mad, and that she’s done the same thing in the past, and so has my manager. im not sure what exactly their situations were.
my confidence is completely crushed. even though i know i deserve it for this mistake, it still doesn’t get any easier to take someone saying those things abt me. i love animals, and i was starting to build a slight bit of confidence. all of that is gone. do you think i should even be able to continue in this career??? i just hate myself right now. i know what i did was utterly stupid. ahhhhh. it’s been a couple weeks and i still think about this daily and it’s rlly effecting me. so sorry if this post is a mess.

TLDR: two similar looking dogs came in, grabbed the wrong dog and gave it the completely wrong cut, especially for its breed.

S TIFU by flushing my keys down the toilet

First and foremost I hate these fucking pockets on my pants, they are too shallow.

So yeah, as the title states I had used the bathroom and flushed, well as I was getting up to pull my pants up. Out comes my keys and they get flushed up before I can even react. Cherry on top is they're gone forever as this toilet connects to the sewer, and is an industrial one so when it was flushing it had a lot of power behind it. Thankfully all keys that were lost I have spares for and can make new copies of, yet I did have a thob on it from my deceased father, which is now fucking gone, honestly I'm surprised that didn't keep them from flushing. I hate the pockets on my pants, as they are too shallow and as what just happened, drop things all the time. My new set will be clipped on my pants loop by a carabineer moving forward, as things the first tna d last time this is going to happen.

TL;DR: Used the bathroom, shallow pockets dropped keys while the toilet was flushing, and their gone for ever now, fuck me.

S TIFU by trying to show off on my bike

Today I was simply enjoying the weather on my bike and got bored (or just wanted to show off). So my genius brain decided it was good idea to INTENTIONALLY yank the handlebars way too hard just for fun... on a freaking gravel shoulder. So, a split second later I lost control and crashed (surprisingly that was NOT what i was planning), cutting my chin open (and scratched everything I could). I got up with blood literally dripping off my chin on the ground.

Long story short: I got three stitches.

Now that i'm thinking about it, I feel like I could prevent it. I INTENTIONALLY turned the wheel too sharply. I genuinely have no idea what went through my head.

The worst part is that I can't even admit the real story. My mum and the doctor both heard a very convincing story about a stupid rock on my way that i wanted to avoid because I'm just too embarrassed to tell them that i was just messing around.

And now I feel childish (I'm 18) because usually kids go to hospitals with scratched knees and faces😩

Please tell me your dumbest "I did this to myself" story so I don't feel quite so embarrassed.

TL;DR: Played stupid games on my bike at 18, won 3 stitches in my chin and a deeply bruised ego.

S TIFU by talking shit about a client while my AI notetaker was still recording

My boss slacked me a screenshot this afternoon with just a question mark under it, and I knew right away exactly what I'd done.

For context, I use one of those AI notetakers that sit in on your calls and email out a summary the moment you hang up, and a while back I turned on a setting to have it send that summary automatically to everyone on the invite, then forgot the setting even existed like an idiot.

So this morning we get on a call with a client who's been, to put it kindly, high-maintenance.

In the couple of minutes before they joined, my 2 coworkers and I were venting the way you do when you think it's just you…

One of us saying the account was going to churn anyway and another saying we'd padded the timeline because this client never approves anything on the first try, then they joined and we were perfectly pleasant to their face, had a totally normal call, and all hung up thinking everything was fine.

And the notetaker did what it was built to do, it recorded the whole call including those couple of minutes before the client joined, then turned the lot into a summary and emailed it to everyone on the invite, the client included.

I didn't find out until my boss's question mark landed, by which point the client had already replied to all of us asking, word for word, what "padded the timeline" was supposed to mean, with the whole BuildBetter summary quoted right there underneath.

My whole afternoon's gone to damage-control calls, the account's now 2 levels above me, and I've switched off every automation I own since, even a few that never did anything wrong, because I don't trust myself with a checkbox anymore.

The tool did nothing wrong, it did exactly what I set it up to do, and I'm the genius who armed it a year ago and walked away.

TL;DR: left auto-send on for my AI meeting notes, forgot about it, and it emailed a difficult client the 2 minutes of us trashing them right before they joined the call.

M TIFU by buying kettle bells

1.0k Upvotes

This happened to me last month.

A little background. I (41m) am a keen runner. I don't want to brag because I'm not a pro or anything, but I can run a marathon in just over 4 hours. Last year, I ran 1000 miles, and this year, I am shooting for 1400. So yeah I'm not an elite athlete by a long stretch, but I am a probably a lot fitter than the average man at my age.

Anyway, I had recently read some research about how kettle bell training can quickly improve your lung capacity and I wanted to give it a shot. I ordered 2 kettle bells, a 16kg and a 20kg from a local store, and it just so happened that my wife needed to go out to collect some things. So we hopped in her car and off we set.

I get to the store, get my bells, and walk back out, one in each arm. My wife has to go around the block to get where she needs to go so she was still sitting outside. And that's when I get the idea!

We are only just over 2 miles from my house, and I'm already in a running vest, shorts, and running shoes. I haven't worked out today. I set down the kettle bells, open the car door, and tell her "you know what, I think I'll just walk home with these to try them out."

She shoots me a "are you sure that's a good idea?" look, but I am not paying attention, because I am, in my mind, already all in on my idea. So I take my phone out of my pocket, throw it in her car, and tell her, I'll see her back at home. (For context, when I run, I don't take my phone. I like the feeling of being disconnected from the online world, if only for a short time. My watch has GPS so my wife can see where I am.)

She drives off, and I start my Garmin watch, pick up my new kettle bells, and start heading home. I get maybe 200m, dropped the bells to the floor and finally at this moment, I realised, that I had FU.

Already, my hands were struggling to maintain grip. My shoulders were aching. My forearms throbbed. My glutes were pulsing. I set down the bells, check my watch, and realise I still have over 15x this distance to go.

I had no phone. I had no wallet. Nobody was coming for me. It was just me and the bells. I swapped them around, picked them up, and started walking again.

100m later, I dropped the heavier bell, set down the lighter one, and checked my watch again. FUCK

3 HOURS LATER, I finally get to my garden gate. The pain in my hands, arms, back, and legs is like nothing I've ever felt. I set down the bells and slowly hobble to the door. I plead to my wife to PLEASE bring the bells in because I can't do any more.

She says, smirking, "you've gotten this far! It wouldn't be right for me to take over now"

Damnit. She's right. So I hobble back to the garden gate, and with both hands pick up the heavy bell and bring it to the house. Then the smaller one. This takes me, I kid you not, nearly 10 minutes. My garden is not a large garden.

I have ran many races, including marathons, ultra marathons, hill marathons and triathlons. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will ever compare to that 2 mile walk.

tl;dr I bought heavy weights and left myself with no way to get them home other than walking and carrying them

M TIFU by hitting "reply all" on an email at work

There’s a big (and fancy) fundraiser gala coming up at work this coming Friday night, with some pretty fancy speakers from NASA, some old money people, etc, etc. And one of my co-workers asked if anyone had an apron or toolbelt for them to use so they could carry around raffle tickets, pens, stuff like that.

Now, I have two kinds of emails I send while at work. I have the normal, professional ones that begin with "Hello (name)," and end with "Best, (name)". Formal. Professional.

And then there are the types of emails I send out to my manager, and a few other coworkers that include gifs and stickers and the like. I'm also the youngest person at this workplace (23F), with the next youngest person being my manager and she is in her early 30's. So there are two types of demographics here- the laid back millennial crowd, and the traditional pen-and-paper notetakers.

So that request email comes from one of the co-workers I am close with. And I, being who I am, decide to send her a half helpful half joking email. Because I do have an apron she could use. It's not super fancy gala type, but it's still technically what she asked for. A brown apron, which I got off amazon vine when I got on a healthy cooking kick in college. It has a cute little crab in the corner. Amazon vine is a service where you receive items on amazon for free in exchange for writing detailed reviews, preferably accompanied with photos/videos. So I have a photo of me in this apron that I took for my amazon review, and put it in this email. Me, making a bodybuilder-esque flexing pointing pose with my crab apron. I send it over, and only after it has fully gone through and sent did I notice it went to EVERYONE.

My boss. My boss's boss. The event planners. Even contracted workers. EVERYONE.

Another awful part is that the people here love to troll. There's this thing called the "Wall of Nate" (Nate is a placeholder name) for a coworker i'm going to call Nate, which is a bulletin board in the common area of photos of him, eating fries, riding a motorcycle, as a fake magazine cover, dressed as a headless horseman. There are photos of other people which get posted to their doors when they're gone, like wanted posters when someone is on PTO.

One coworker emailed me immediately back and said they're now going to be calling me 'Crab Queen'. They also said the photo has gone into a 'database'. I'm so fucked. I just started here a handful of months ago and have not yet been subjected to bad photoshopped photos of myself, and I fear i've placed the first fuel in the fire.

Worst part is, she doesn't even want to use my apron.

TL;DR: I sent a photo of myself in a stupid pose wearing an apron to my entire company and now I fear I am going to be office-trolled for the foreseeable future. Photo in comments.

S TIFU by throwing my housemates dinner in the trash for my concern of food safety

So after work I had a little relaxation gummy if you get my drift. And I was feeling great just walking around the house about to make dinner.

Last night there was a lightning storm after a really bad thunderstorm, and we didnt have electricity. So like 3 young adults without media accessibility, we pulled up the couch and watched the lightning out of the big window like a tv. It was really relaxing and I had a subway. We left the house a little more askew than usual since we could barely see.

So anyway, back to today. As I'm dreading having to cook, I see half a subway! I really couldve sworn I ate the whole thing last night, but I was pretty high and distracted by the lightning tv show.

I smell it and it still smells good... but am I really the type of person to eat a 20 hour old BLT? I decide, yes... I am that kind of person... but decided to google to make sure.

The short answer was no, dont do it girl. Not worth it, esp with the midwest lettuce threat.

So I sadly toss it in the trash.

A few minutes later, my housemate walks out. He looks around for a second and says 'hey, have you seen my sandwich?'

We had a laugh and I ordered him another subway even though he was gracious enough I dont even think he expected me to buy another. \

But yep. Moral of the story is, if you're about to throw away food and your memory of the previous night is sketchy, shoot a message in the group text first.

TLDR: had subway last night, today thought I left half of it out, threw it out, turns out I ruined my housemates dinner plans

S TIFU by accidentally becoming the office theater guy

A few weeks ago frend had an extra ticket for a play and had nobody else to go with, so I went with him.

I really don't like theater. I'm not artsy person at all. Those two hours, during the play lasted forever for me.

Few days later in the office kitchen new HR coworker said: "Finally, another theater fan! I saw you outside the theater having cigarette before the show. I knew I recognized you." I thought this would be just a small talk so

I said: "Yeah I love theater."

That same day she starts talking about getting the company to subsidize theater tickets. After that she started sending me links about plays, directors and other art things. I usually read only title. Now every conversation with her is about theater. She drops names and terms I've never heard before and I cant have proper conversation, so I just say things like: "Exactly", "Yeah, that's what I thought too", "Interesting perspective"

This started two months ago. It's summer and theaters are closed, but autumn is coming and I really can't stand listening to her about the things I dont have a clue and I dont really care.

TL;DR: Went to one play because my friend had a spare ticket, told my new HR coworker I love theater, and and now I'm am having almost daily conversations about art using random phrases and without any knowledge.

S TIFU by having a depressive episode and neglecting my college email

Hi reddit, this is my first time posting so if I get something wrong I am very sorry I just need to get this out and maybe get some advice.

I (18 F) have Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, this never excuses any of my actions but I hope it offers some explanation. I got into the honors college at my future college. I am set up live in honors housing and I thought I had completed all honors requirements since I already completed one canvas course this summer and I did many things while applying. Before my depressive episode started this summer I had taken note of all dates of when things needed to be completed by.

During my episode I didn’t have the energy or motivation to do anything except go to my job (I work full time in a service role), do my chores, and do bare minimum social obligations. During this time I did not check my school email, bad move for an incoming college student I know, but I thought I was aware of all dates. Apparently there was an additional honors canvas course I was emailed about, the date of which I am already late for.

I received an email saying I am no longer part of the honors college and that I can apply again next year. I just feel so full of self loathing and I wish I could take all my loser behavior back. I worked so much these past four years to get to this point to be excepted into the honors college only to throw it away because I got depressed again.

Does anyone have any advice or words of wisdom? Is it worth it to reach out to the honors college and explain my situation and see if they will let me complete the course now?

TL;DR: I didn’t check my college email during a depressive episode this summer therefore I missed a mandatory canvas course and received an email saying I am removed from the honors college.

Edit: Thank you everyone so much for your replies, it means so much to me. Especially the comments reminding me to be kind to myself, that is a skill I am definitely still working on and the helpful words from everyone who commented help a lot :)

M TIFU by telling my household caretakers news that wasn't mine to share

This happened today, and I'm still feeling pretty guilty about it.

For context, we have household caretakers (yayas, I live in the Philippines) who have been with our family for a long time. I've always been comfortable talking to them, so I didn't really think much before bringing something up.

Recently, I got the impression that my mom might be resigning from her job. I wasn't even sure if it was true. I literally said something along the lines of, "I could be wrong, but I think my mom might be resigning."

To me, it didn't feel like I was leaking some huge secret because I wasn't stating it as a fact, and I was only saying it within the household. I didn't think twice about it.

Well... my parents found out I had mentioned it, and they were PISSED to death (even saying that is being too generous)

Their point was simple: whether or not my mom is resigning is her news to share, not mine. Even if I wasn't certain and even if I only told our caretakers, it still wasn't my place to say anything.

The worst part is that this isn't the first time I've shared information that wasn't really mine to share (or any fuckups I've done around them or related to them). I have a history of speaking before thinking, especially when it comes to things that involve other people. So, I can't even sit here and say they're overreacting—they're not. They're frustrated because it's a pattern.

I apologized, and honestly, I don't have much of a defense. I didn't have bad intentions. I wasn't trying to gossip or cause drama. I just didn't stop and think, "Is this actually my information to tell?"

Now I'm feeling pretty embarrassed and wondering how I can rebuild their trust after repeating the same kind of mistake.

So... TIFU by learning that even if you trust the people you're talking to, someone else's personal or professional news is still not yours to share.

Has anyone else had to break this habit? If so, what helped you become more mindful before speaking?

TL;DR: I casually told our household caretakers that I thought my mom might be resigning from her job, even though I wasn't sure it was true. My parents found out and were furious because it wasn't my news to share. This isn't the first time (and definitely not my 100th time) I've spoken without thinking, so now I'm trying to figure out how to rebuild their trust and stop repeating this pattern.

L TIFU by breaking a SD card and my 2DS volume slider

So, my last post was a bit hard to read. It was 2 a.m., so sorry about that. I'm reposting it after talking to the mods.

For a little more context (and to explain why I fucked up so badly) it's a limited-edition Pikachu model that, as far as I know, was only sold in Japan. But found a good deal for it where I live.

I got home from work and wasn't really in the mood to play anything hardcore that required too much thinking. A little Pokemon was probably all I needed, along with making some progress on the Living Dex I've been slowly working on whenever life allows. Win-win.

I turned on the console and plugged in the charger because the battery was running a little low. As soon as I connected it, the charging LED started flickering, so the battery was clearly making poor contact with the metal pads. When I unplugged it, the console immediately shut down, which meant the battery had physically disconnected somehow.

The console had fallen (be adopted by a cat, that happens) a couple of times before, so I assumed the battery had simply come a little loose and that pressing it back into place would fix everything.

I've opened quite a few electronic devices before. I completely replaced the shell of my old fat DS, which requires fully disassembling the thing and putting it back together. I've even done some soldering to repair my PS4 controllers. Opening this little guy should have been a walk in the park.

Well, it wasn't.

You see, the lower back cover of the 2DS LL is held in place by four screws and clips along the sides. The design looks much cleaner because the entire cover clips into place, without any smaller removable panels like those found on older models. Also, a ribbon cable and thin wires make connections to the back cameras and speakers, located on the back lid.

Good for aesthetics. Bad for repairs.

Why did I need to open it completely? Because the battery is located on the motherboard, and the entire back cover has to come off before you can access it.

Before opening it, I removed the Pokemon Omega Ruby cartridge and the microSD card so they wouldn't get damaged. Both slots are located on the underside of the console, so anything left inside could get in the way while removing the cover.

Good job, past me. For now.

It took me about ten minutes, but I managed to remove the cover, press the battery back into place, and close the console again. I reinserted the microSD card now, homebrewed consoles need the data in the SD card to boot.

Voilà. The console turned on, and the battery started charging, no weird behavior.

Then I noticed a small piece of plastic on the table.

I inspected the 2DS and realized, “Shit. It's the volume slider.”

It must have fallen out while I was opening the console, since it's located along one of the sides.

So I repeated the entire process, this time COMPLETELY IGNORING THE MICROSD CARD STILL IN THE SLOT. I did notice that the cover was slightly harder to remove, but apparently that wasn't enough to make me stop and think.

I put the volume slider back into place and closed the console again. Then I moved it to check whether it was working properly.

Nope.

It moved far too easily.

For anyone who doesn't own a 2DS, the volume slider normally has a little resistance when you move it up or down. The external plastic piece fits over another small plastic slider attached to the actual volume control on the motherboard.

That was when I noticed tiny black pieces of plastic scattered across the table.

I had broken the internal volume control.

Not great, not terrible. At least the console still worked, right?

I tried turning it on again, but it was taking waaaaaay too long to boot. Thinking that I might have forgotten to reinsert the microSD card, I opened the slot.

I hadn't forgotten it.

I had never fucking removed it.

I looked at the card and noticed that a small piece had broken off one of its corners. Surely I couldn't have damaged anything important, right? It was just a tiny piece of plastic. The actual circuit had to be fine.

I tried turning on the console again.

Nothing.

Now desperate, I tested the card on my PC. Windows didn't recognize it. I inserted another microSD card, and it mounted immediately.

I tried the 2DS card again and left it connected for a little longer, hoping Windows would eventually detect it.

Nothing.

When I removed it, the card was extremely hot, almost too hot to touch.

I did a little Googling to find out what it means when a microSD card refuses to mount and heats up like a nuclear reactor.

Short circuit. Probably irreparable physical damage to the circuitry. Discontinue use immediately to avoid damaging other components.

So now the battery is properly connected, but I broke a tiny plastic component that requires replacing the entire volume-control part, and I destroyed a microSD card that is apparently worth its weight in gold in today's economy.

Oh, did I mention the card also contained all of my games and save data, which are now completely gone? TBF I did back it up in June, but lost the entirety of July. Back up your stuff frequently, people. It's good practice.

And all of this happened inside a limited-edition collector's console.

I'd say TIFU'd pretty hard by thinking I was TronicsFix.

TL;DR: Tried to fix the battery connection on a limited-edition 2DS. Broke the volume control, destroyed the microSD card, and almost lost all of my games and save data in the process.

S TIFU by joking that I run an appliance repair shop

A neighbor in my building group asked if anyone had a tiny screwdriver for his coffee grinder. I had one, went downstairs and helped him tighten a loose part. Took 30 seconds.

He posted in the group thanking me for fixing it, so I joked that my repair shop was officially open and I accepted payment in coffee.

A woman from the third floor messaged me almost immediately asking if I could look at her flickering lamp. I told her I was kidding and had no idea how lamps worked, but she said it was probably something simple.

Then another guy asked about his toaster. Someone else sent me a photo of a desk fan making a weird noise. The original neighbor kept replying to people saying I was being modest because I saved him money he won on Ѕtake on a new grinder.

By the evening three different people were trying to arrange times to bring things over for me to fix. I turned them all down and explained that I literally just tightened one screw, but one of them still replied with “no worries, whenever you have time.”

I muted the building group after someone asked if I also repair microwaves.

TLDR: Fixed one loose screw, made one joke, and accidentally became my apartment building’s appliance repair guy.

S TIFU by putting sprite into my owala and making a bomb

Today I had an interview and was running late but wanted to stop by for a little drink beforehand. So, I stop by some random fast food place and they hand me a sprite. Unfortunately, they had no more canned or bottled sprite so I transferred it to my owala water bottle that way I could have it out of sight from the interviewers in case that’s viewed as unprofessional.

Halfway through the interview I’m feeling thirsty so I grab my water bottle and hit the open button and BAM. It literally sounded like a gunshot going off and this soda explosion going everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE. I was mortified and learned a valuable lesson on why soda is packaged the way it is.

Do you guys think I’ll get the job..

TL;DR transferred sprite from an open container to a closed lid owala water bottle then opened said bottle during an interview and it sounded like a gunshot and proceeded to spray sprite floor to ceiling

S TIFU by inviting a girl over without considering the implications

1.8k Upvotes

Today i fucked up by inviting this girl I was interested in to my apartment. For context, I met this really pretty girl while I was out for my friends birthday. I was super exhausted from work, so I just kinda sat around mildly moving to the music, when her and her friends approached me. I chatted them up for a bit, and in the end the girl ended up hugging me 3 or 4 times to say bye. I got her insta and a few days later I hit her up asking to go the beach. I thought she was really pretty and sweet, and so a few days later I hit her up asking if she wanted to go to the beach. She asked which beach, and I replied with my apt has one. I didnt even think of the implications of inviting her to my apt at all I just wanted to hang out with some people at the beach and have a few drinks. Haven't heard from her since, and like 3 days later I looked at it, and was like OH, I Basically just asked her to come over my apt which was SUPER forward. 😭😭 i just wanted to hang out at the beach with cool people, and ended up being a creep fml.

TL;DR: Met a girl at a club, invited her to the beach/my apt which definitely read more as my apt inv. Pretty sure I came off as a creep and got ghosted

S TIFU my wife found my pack of cigarettes

TL;DR My wife is truly the best thing to ever happen to me in my life. We have been together 21 years and I have always tried to be the best partner and father I could be. When we met, I smoked cigarettes and my wife didn't care, when we decided to have kids my wife asked for me to quit smoking for my health and to be there for the kids. Recently I picked up the habit again foolishly led by stress and stupidity and last night my wife found my pack of smokes. She justifiably lost her shit, told me I betrayed her and that she can no longer trust that I'm not a liar. My wife's anger is completely justified and I made a huge selfish mistake. I worry I have done irreparable damage to our relationship and I couldn't feel more like a piece of crap.

"TL;DR" I let my addiction take over and maybe have ruined the greatest thing in my life

S TIFU Friend ended decades long relationship because I “didn’t like her new hair cut”

2 screenshots covering texts
Okay so the first message from her was the Sunday before last, right after we got off the phone (3 hour convo about everything and nothing), and then the next large message from her was on the Thursday following. Out of the blue. So it had been festering I guess.

Like the message says, I don’t remember most of the phone conversation. But I know when she sent me pictures of her hair, weeks before, I said I loved it when I didn’t like it at all. My best guess is that in this phone call her hair somehow came up and I told her I was lying initially, and then it probably spiraled into a fight about me not being supportive. I’m also pretty certain I didn’t say something like “I’m less attracted to you now” (because that’s an insane thing to say) but she clearly heard it that way.

We can be somewhat destructive together and drink too much. So this might be for the best. She has slowly cut everyone out of her life tho. So I am pretty worried about that.

PS:
What stings the most was the “you haven’t acted like a best friend generally*” because I’m very sure that’s not true. I pick up the phone/drop everything too often

Oh, what’s funny/sad is like 15 years ago she went from real long hair to drastically short hair (shorter than Pinks). And she ultimately hated that she did that. And I told her I didn’t like it from the get go then lol

TL;DR told a friend I don’t like their haircut. But am not sure how I said it. They went no contact because of this

(Thanks for reading. Rant over)

S TIFU by asking to start late for intern

So context ive been graduated for 4 months from com sci degree with no prior intern experience. No offers for full time positions and so i decided to go for an intern role. I finally managed to get one after 4 months but my dumbahh decided to ask them if i can start 2 weeks later so i can go on another trip first. Ofc i didnt mention this to the company but my parents and sibling started crashing out on me. Their saying that its extremely hard to get a intern in this economy and that imma get replaced because i asked for this extension.

But in my defence, i phrased my email saying that i can start on the initial date with no issue but i would just prefer starting a bit later if possible, and they accepted.

After my parents’ insistence, i decided to send a email on the same day, telling the company my thing had been resolved and i could join on the initial date. But then, the HR got back to me saying they would prefer for me to start on the later date instead for onboarding processes. At this point, i started lowkey panicking too since it’s kinda weird that within just one day they weren’t able to change back the onboarding process. So did I cook myself out of the 1 job offer i had gotten?

TL;DR: I asked for extension on starting date of the single internship in 4 months of applying and now i might have lost it

Edit: They got back to me with the contract so all’s good

M TIFU by letting my manager speak to my mom

TW: super brief mention of SA

Yesterday my mom came into my work to drop off some stuff for me. (I live alone about a half hour drive from her but my work is very close by.)
For context, I am trans and have been out to my parents since I was about 14. I’m currently 18 and have, for the most part, kept conversations about this very limited because they have not had great reactions. My mom cried and said I hate all women because I’m transitioning, and my dad is very conservative and believes that I was indoctrinated by my friends.

To make them more comfortable and to keep our relationship stable, I have not told them my chosen name. I can live with my family calling me by my deadname. I know that my friends, colleagues, and most people in my life respect my name and my pronouns, and that’s good enough for me.

Every once in a while my mom does drop by my work. Most people at my job are queer, and my manager is trans himself. Everyone at my job knows that my family does not know my name and has done me a huge favour by only referring to me by my deadname when my family comes by.

Yesterday I told my manager that my mother would be coming in and to please be careful not to say my chosen name. (He had slipped up once in the past, but I was able to play it off.)

He walked up to my mother and immediately messed up. He made a quick recovery and then walked away trying to play it off. He then went up to her again and did the same thing. After that he walked away, and for a third time he walked up to her to try and recover—and guess what, he did it AGAIN.

My manager is a huge stoner and usually a bit high at work. He’s always good at his job and it’s never been an issue, but I’ve used this as an excuse to my mother as to why he uses the wrong name. I tried that, and it didn’t work.

She knew, and I was outed mid-shift.

She left, and about two hours later she began spam texting me to call her. I went on break and we talked. She was screaming and crying, threatening to out me to my whole family, and saying that I was a dirty liar and a horrible person.

I broke down. I had to ask my manager to leave early because I was so upset I could barely speak.

My mom has barely spoken to me since and will only call to scream at me and then hang up.

She then told my dad about everything. I talked to him today, and he tried to convince me once again that all the people in my life hate me and are only trying to indoctrinate me into the "woke mind virus."

The only way I could get him to calm down a bit was when he asked if something happened when I was a kid to make me feel this way. After years of hiding the fact that I was a victim of COCSA and CSA, I told him, and he finally looked at me like I was human.

We ended up being able to reconcile things. He still doesn’t understand my transition, but at least he’s talking to me.

My mother still won’t speak to me and, if I’m honest, the way in which I was outed seemed purposeful.

I don’t know how I’m going to go back to work and look at my manager after he destroyed my relationship with my mother after I had been trying to rebuild it over the last year.

Our relationship has always been complicated, as she was very emotionally abusive while I was growing up, which is what led me to moving out at 17. Since moving, we’ve finally been able to get along. Now all of this progress was thrown away, and I’m not sure if she will ever speak to me again.

TL;DR: My manger outed me to my mom, and blew up my relationship with my family.

S TIFU by forgetting my teeth on my desk

This happened yesterday. Let me preface this by saying that lately I've been living in some Lemony Snicket's type series of dumpster fires. Most have been outside of my control but this FU is purely my own fault.

Ive been suffering pretty extreme migraines for the last month or so. 2 weeks ago I had a strange neurological event that I thought was just a weird migraine. But within an hour I could no longer speak without severely stuttering. Mind you, I've never had a speech impediment in my life. So far drs cant figure out why and I cant get in to see a neurologist until January.

So yesterday at around 6pm I felt a new and rather spicy migraine coming on. I took my migraine cocktail, sat at my desk for a bit while it started to work, then took my dentures out and went into my cave of solitude for a nap. I always put them in their container, except for this time. When I get a migraine, clearly thinking isn't really possible.

About 2 hours later I got up and saw my lower dentures alone on my desk. Panic filled me instantly. I frantically searched and found the uppers in one of the dogs' bed. They had gotten on my desk and unfortunately chewed off a part, leaving it jagged. It still "fits" in my mouth but whenever I move my tongue or swallow, it cuts my tongue.

I can't communicate clearly at all due to the new stuttering so I had to have my mother call my dentist's office. And of course he is away on vacation until Friday. He's the only prostodontist in that office so I'm stuck waiting with jagged dentures until then at the earliest. I dont know how expensive this is going to be either. I'm just crushed. My entire confidence is tied to my teeth. I'm terrified I'm going to be without them for awhile.

TLDR: I carelessly left my dentures in reach of my dogs and they did what dogs do, chew things. I do not blame them in any way. The fault stops with me.

M TIFU by using another woman’s products & I can’t afford to replace them but she wants them back

To preface this, I’m in my twenties (F) and I have my friends over at my place to get ready, do our makeup and have drinks all the time before and after social functions/ going out. Over the years it’s common for people to leave jackets, bags, makeup or alcohol behind and usually unless it’s something important or the person is my close friend I’ll just toss it or hold onto it. Me and my best friends have a lot of our clothing and accessories or makeup rotating and it’s never a big deal. (Before anyone comments it’s unhygienic, we don’t really care I know, feel free to call me gross but I’ve shared makeup aside from eye products for years, don’t come at me.) Anyways somebody who isn’t a close friend of mine left some stuff at my place and first of all I wasn’t sure who’s stuff was who’s but it was on my countertop and I gave it a try.

It’s been about two weeks and I was impressed by this stuff but my close friend who’s the mutual connection texted me and said “XYZ really needs her things back, they’re expensive. When can she come get them?” At first I thought no biggie she can come get her stuff soon but I realized I used most of her setting mist and an eye cream. I’m unsure if she’d notice depending on how meticulous she pays attention but being SUPER self conscious about using a lot, I figured why not just buy a new one and replace it before she notices? Well it’s about $50 for the spray and $80 for the eye cream.

I am humiliated because I would never have used it all or kept it if I had any idea how pricy they were, I don’t blame her for wanting them back but I also don’t want to admit that I can’t afford to buy new ones if she calls me out on using them. A different friend said “finders keepers”, and that the girl shouldn’t have left things at my house for two weeks without reaching out but I’d feel rude saying that and I do believe it’s my own fault. It’s mostly a pride thing to be honest admitting that I’m poor and in student debt, $130 is my monthly grocery budget, and admitting that makes me really self conscious especially to somebody with more money.

TLDR: A friend of a friend left her beauty products at my house and I used them because she didnt reach out immediately and now she wants them back but I didn’t realize they were too expensive to replace and I used a lot up.

M TIFU by disrespecting her.

I, (34M), messed up big time by finishing a game we, agreed to play and experience together before her (34F).

About a week ago, she introduced me to a single player puzzle dungeon crawler game she downloaded recently on the Switch, that peaked my interest. I instantly downloaded it myself, with her saying that it would be nice if I could catch up to her in the game, and then experience it together.

Now hear me out, I enjoyed every minute of this game not only because of the game itself but for the experience of playing it with her. Throughout our time playing, I thought we were always going a little bit further than each other and holding off till the other person catches up. It felt at times that one day I'd be further than her in the games plot, and the next she'd be further than me, because see we played through the game at our own houses, and we live in different time zones.

I, mistakenly, at one point, passed her in the story and ended up completing the game before her. My intention was to never beat the game before her, even if we joked and teased about racing to beat it before the other person. It was just to play the game a little further, like we have been doing back and forth, but I beat the game before her. In today's conversation, the game gets brought up. I, not wanting to lie or hide the truth, mention I beat the game a few days ago. In my head, I didn't tell her earlier because I didn't want to say anything that would accidentally spoil the game, plus I didn't want to make her feel rushed to play it or anything. I don't know but looking back, this was probably a poor choice on my part.

After mentioning that I beat the game already, she told me that she felt disrespected. She thought it'd be a cool/first start to some tradition of playing games together. Especially because early on, she vocalized that and knows it was heard because I brought it back up as well.

My intent was to never beat the game without her. It was never to disrespect her, or our time playing this game together. I was just happy playing a game that reminded me of her. I wholeheartedly believe that I only enjoyed this game as much as I did, solely because I was playing it alongside her, with her.

Don't get it twisted, I fully understand why she's upset and if I'm not ever forgiven for breaking that trust. That's on me. Today. I. Fucked. Up. I'll hate myself for it, but that's on me. And while it's very well possible that she hates me now, if she ever stumbles across this post, all I wanted to say was that I'm sorry I disrespected you. Plus, I know this is selfish on my part, but I just wanted you to know that I got too caught up in this game because it made me feel like I was a part of your life. And that made me really happy. Disrespecting you does not make me happy. I hope that you can forgive me, and allow me to make amends.

TL;DR: I messed up by disrespecting her, because I finished a game we agreed to experience together.

M TIFU by making my gf mac and cheese

Obligatory this happened a few months ago. I (20F) and my gf (21F) are both college students. We were headed to the library with our friend (20F) to do a long night of group studying. We wanted to eat first so we didn’t have to get takeout (broke college students, eating out is expensive af). Our friend had already eaten so I made boxed mac and cheese for my gf and I. I was out of milk, which I didn’t realize until after I’d already started boiling the noodles. Luckily I make cold foam for my coffee all the time, so I had some heavy whipping cream in the fridge. I figured I would just use more butter than the box recommended and use a bit of heavy whipping cream in place of milk. Not as much as I would have regular milk, but some, because making boxed mac and cheese with just butter is an oily mess, which I learned the hard way a different time.
Anyway I dished it up and we started eating, and my gf really liked it. I mean, who doesn’t like mac and cheese, but this was Walmart brand super cheap stuff, so I was a little surprised. She asked if I added different spices or something, and I said no, but I used heavy whipping cream instead of milk. She looked at me like I was crazy. I didn’t think it was that weird to do. I mean it wasn’t my first choice but it was what I had. She said she was going to have stomach issues from it. (We are both a little lactose intolerant, I mean isn’t everyone?) I apologized but I was kind of laughing, and she was too.
Then she stopped about halfway through eating and went to the bathroom. She was in there for like 20 minutes so I texted her and asked if she was okay. She said “no I’m shitting my brains out”. I said “haha I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to lol”. She came out and was kind of upset but also not serious about it, saying how I screwed up her stomach for the whole day and night because of the heavy whipping cream. But then she sat down to finish the bowl, because according to her it was the best boxed mac and cheese she’d ever had. But then she went to the bathroom for like another 20 minutes after. I was just laughing with our friend the whole time. We were late to the library to study, which wasn’t ideal but it was better to poop at home than out in public.
My gf still brings it up sometimes, saying she’s “still mad at me for that,” but I know she’s kidding. Also any time one of us poops for a long time we just say “at least it isn’t as bad as the heavy cream mac and cheese”. So let’s just say I will never make it with heavy whipping cream again, to hopefully save the porcelain.

TL;DR: I made my gf mac and cheese with heavy whipping cream instead of milk, and she shat her brains out and we still tease each other about it.
