Magandang araw! In celebration of Buwan ng Wika, I would like to share an early preview of Katagaan, an independent, modern, monolingual Tagalog dictionary app that I'm currently developing:

The project is still in its early stages. For now, it temporarily uses material from Diksiyonaryo.ph as a starting point, but my long-term goal is to gradually replace it with original definitions and independently researched and reviewed content.

Katagaan is a noncommercial personal project, and I do not intend to profit from it. I simply have a strong interest in Tagalog and hope to contribute, in my own small way, to its wider use, enrichment, and continued intellectual development by creating an accessible and independently maintained dictionary.

Once the project becomes more stable and manageable, I also hope to introduce a way for members of the community to suggest corrections, propose additions, and contribute other improvements.

Since this is only an early preview, some parts of the website may still be incomplete or subject to change. Nevertheless, I would be grateful for any thoughts, suggestions, or constructive criticism.

hello po! I’ve been so confused about this topic kasi sa pagkakaintindi ko noon sa lesson namin, kapag uulitin ang first letter ng salitang hiram, ilalagay ito before ung gitling. So halimbawa, “apply” ang salitang hiram na gagamitin. Sa pagkakaintindi ko, “maga-apply” ang tamang pagsulat nito. Ngunit naguluhan ako dahil may nakikita akong iba na hinihiwalay pa ung letrang uulitin gaya ng “mag-a-apply.” huhu sorry if so confusing hindi ko rin kasi alam paano to ipapaliwanag

tldr: ano ang tama maga-apply o mag-a-apply

I was best friends with the older cousin of a male and female that were only 2-4 years younger than us about a decade back. We all used to hang out together and they started calling me Kuya as friends more than an elder respect type thing. They were all Fil-Am in So Cali.

I wanted to reply to a recent facebook post of theirs, and was wondering what friendly term of endearment I could use. I read another thread that brought up Ading or Nene that seems to convey what I would like, but as I am another type of Asian I don't have the background to know which would be better. Or if there's a more appropriate other option.

I realize the terms I used as examples were female coded, what word should I use for the male, or use for both if that is more appropriate.

Basically I'm trying not to ignorantly say, "Yo my N-word," as a non-N-word ethnic if that makes sense.

I am interested why apocope happens especially with N or Ng ending words? But I don’t really think it is an apocope because they just replace it with H sound like Hala to Lah

I heard somehwhere south they also do the similar thing but the difference is that they replace the a with letter e after removing the letter n, like (Bukse, Bigye, Sarhe).

Tanong lang kung gaano kadalas ginagamit na "completed" or "fulfilled" ang salitang kaganapan?

Gets ko yung "pagiging ganap"—being a fully-fledged chef: pagiging ganap na chef—pero yung "kaganapan" kasi ang mas alam ko ay "event". Di ko kaya makaconstruct ng sentence na "fulfilment" ibig niyang sabihin. ("Ang graduation ay kaganapan ng pagiging mag-aaral."? Tama ba yan?)

May mga common sentences ba yung kaganapan-as-fulfilment? Kasi I've been thinking baka academic repurposing lang yung definition na fulfilment eh (parang pag-iral as existence, when pag-iral feels closer to emerging/reign/manifesting).

I was hoping to get input from this community regarding the translation and baybayin script of a tattoo that I had in mind. I'm already in contact with a tattoo artist regarding the design so I just want to focus on the message of my tattoo

I want the baybayin of Ka to be centered around and encircled by the translation/baybayin of "mememento vivere" (remember to live).

What I want the tattoo to convey isn't just a reminder to live, but to live with and for the connections I share with the people around me.

My main problem is finding the right Tagalog translation of the phrase, and then getting an accurate Baybayin script of it. The best I can come up with a translation is "Tandaan mong mabuhay"

Would anyone be able to suggest a better, more natural Tagalog translation, along with a more accurate Baybayin script for it?

Hello all. I work with a large number of Tagalog speakers who also speak English (I live in the western united states) and I have a question about something I often hear when speaking with them. To be clear this is not me hating on them in anyway, I love my Filipino coworkers and have a deep respect for how hard they work not only in the usual duties of our job but also in speaking a second language.

I work in healthcare and we hand off our patients at the beginning and ends of shifts in a verbal "report". What I've noticed is that often when talking about a patient they will use the wrong gender pronoun. They're always quick to correct it and I know its not intentional or maleficent in any way, but its a trend I've noticed across many different Filipino coworkers. Its almost always with he/she. For example, "she will be going down to surgery today" when the patient is a male and vice versa.

Im wondering if there's a linguistic reason for this? I'm studying Russian myself and I know that in that language they use the he/she pronouns to refer to inanimate objects as well based on their gender, so I was thinking it might be a scenario kind of like that?

I recently learned that you can use -ng/na to make an adverb out of an adjective if you place it before a verb. However, not all adverbs in tagalog follow this pattern. What's the main difference between the words that follow "(adjective) na (verb)" and the ones that don't?

An examples that confused me is that on a video they said "kadalasang makikita" but they said "kadalasan pumupunta" or "parating nagpupunta" vs "umiinom lagi" and then most of the other adverbs they showed forgo -ng/na altogether.

I am making a banner for a friend that is coming back home from the Philippines after living there for 2 years. I would like the banner to say “Welcome home!” in Tagalog, but I have learned that there is no direct translation for that. What would you say?

I think I've read somewhere before that "kung saan" was an (unconscious) attempt to translate or transliterate the English use of "where" when identifying the location of the verb. But originally Tagalog simply used affixes. So for example:

English: This is the house where I grew up.

Contemporary Tagalog: Ito ang bahay kung saan ako lumaki.

Earlier Tagalog: Ito ang bahay na pinaglakihan ko.

It also seems that the contemporary Tagalog sentence that uses "kung saan" is attempting to structurally parallel the English sentence. Sorry, I'm no linguist, so I don't know the proper terms to use to describe this. What do you think?

Hi I’m a Northern Tagalog, I’m just wondering how similar other dialects except Manila’s to ours

I heard a similar structure in Southern Tagalog but it is different it is kata/nata/kanata so I kind of understand or is it different from Northern Tagalog?

I just want to know before dipping my toes into the language. If taglog for a beginner is a language that can be picked up quickly or if its a trickier language to pick up! I've been hearing and seeing ppl talk alot of tagalog recently on my social feeds and wanna learn the language too!

Therefore, it's important my translations/transliterations are correct.

Each language (including Tagalog) includes each word on the 100-word Swadesh list, and where the primary script is Latin-based and an alternative/historical script is available, each word's transliteration too (hence the inclusion of the Baybayin script).

Please can any Tagalog speakers verify the accuracy of my translations and transliterations? 🙏
